The teacher provides new or reviews old information with the children. The teacher will introduce new concepts to the children or review old information to help the children make a transition from the familiar concepts to the new concepts. Broadly speaking, the function of teachers is to help students learn by imparting knowledge to them and by setting up a situation in which students can and will learn effectively.
There are six approaches in the teaching of literature. They are the (1) Language-Based Approach, (2) Paraphrastic Approach, (3) Information-Based Approach, (4) Personal-Response Approach, (5) Moral-Philosophical Approach, and (6) Stylistic Approach.
Literature teachers provide instruction in the interpretation and analysis of literary works, such as novels,
plays and poetry. They typically work in high schools, colleges and universities. They usually deliver course materials through a combination of reading assignments, lectures and small-group discussions. Effective teachers strategically gather, analyze, and use information to guide students learning, which is accomplished by their own understanding of literacy learning and what is expected as a measure of success.
Competence and confidence in literacy, including competence in grammar, spelling and the spoken word, are essential for progress in all areas of the curriculum. Because of this, all teachers have responsibility for promoting language and literacy development. A literature teacher wears many hats in the classroom, playing a crucial role in shaping students' engagement with and understanding of literary works. Here are some key aspects of their role:
Sparking interest and motivation: A good teacher can cultivate a love for reading by choosing engaging texts, creating a vibrant classroom environment, and using diverse teaching methods.
Guiding comprehension: They help students decipher complex language, literary devices, and historical contexts, ensuring clear understanding of the text's meaning and themes.
Encouraging critical thinking: Through open-ended questions and discussions, teachers prompt students to analyze, interpret, and form their own informed opinions about the text.
Fostering discussion and collaboration: They create a safe space for respectful dialogue, encouraging students to share diverse perspectives and learn from each other.
Literary understanding: They possess a deep knowledge of literature, different genres, historical periods, and literary theory, providing valuable context and insight. Pedagogical skills: They employ diverse teaching strategies, using technology, multimedia, and creative activities to cater to different learning styles and needs.
Assessment and feedback: They effectively assess student progress, providing constructive feedback to help them improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Enthusiasm for literature: A teacher's genuine passion for reading and storytelling can be contagious, igniting a similar spark in their students.
Connecting literature to life: They help students see the relevance of literature to their own lives and experiences, fostering empathy, understanding, and personal growth.
Role model and mentor: They serve as a positive role model, encouraging intellectual curiosity, independent learning, and a lifelong love of reading and analysis. References:
