It is known that in the modern education system, various technologies are applied to enhance the knowledge level of learners. One such technology is modular teaching technology.
The exact place and date of origin of modular teaching technologies are not known. However, it is generally believed to have emerged in the 1960s-1970s. It was first implemented in the education systems of the United States and European countries. The lack of a specific origin date is due to the gradual development of this teaching method through various educational theories. Modular teaching technologies are very significant and are widely applied in modern education systems. [2]
In Azerbaijan, the first proponents and implementers of this idea were R. Agamaliyev and i. 9hmadov. They conducted numerous studies and prepared various methodological materials to improve modular teaching technologies and integrate them into the local education system. They also organized seminars and training sessions to explain the essence of this technology to teachers and education professionals and demonstrate its practical application. As a result, they contributed significantly to improving the quality of education. [1]
Modular teaching technologies are inherently student-centered pedagogical technologies. One of their most important advantages is their integration capability. Through the technologies it integrates, modular teaching addresses students' needs comprehensively.
The new perspectives of modular teaching technologies involve students learning independently, with teachers facilitating motivational management of the learning process. Here, the teacher's role changes, requiring motivation, organization, coordination, mutual agreement, and, most importantly, control. This technology enhances students' intellect, independence, ability to work collaboratively, and tendency to manage educational and cognitive activities. [3] Teaching Alkanes with Modular Teaching Technologies
Before applying modular teaching technologies to any subject, it is essential to ensure that the language of the module is clear, expressive, and directly addressed to learners. The form of information in the module is determined by the types of that information. It is not convincing to expect the application of new teaching technologies to immediately change the situation in schools or students' attitudes toward the subject. The adaptation phase to new technologies for learners can be quite lengthy and challenging. From the first lessons, it is important to focus on learners' individual, group, or collective working skills, their ability to evaluate their work and that of their peers, and their ability to work with textbooks and supplementary materials.
This technology is particularly effective in teaching chemistry. The main advantage of modular teaching is its offer of an individualized approach to students. Applying this technology to various sections of chemistry, especially for complex topics, is highly beneficial for students. For example, the section on alkanes can be considered. As one of the complex yet essential sections of organic chemistry, alkanes require in-depth analysis and detailed information. Modular teaching technologies simplify these complexities, allowing each student to learn the topic individually.[6]
The structure, nomenclature, isomerization, and chemical properties of alkanes can be taught in modules. Dividing the teaching of this section into stages directs students' attention to specific topics, ensuring the complete understanding of each stage.[4.]
Application of Modular Teaching Technology in Teaching Alkanes Module 1: The Structure and Nomenclature of Alkanes
The basis of this module is to help students easily grasp the molecular structure and naming conventions of alkanes. This module may include the following instructional materials and activities:
Topic: The straight-chain and branched structures of alkanes and the bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms.
Activities: Helping students construct the structure of alkanes using specific programs and models.
Assessment: Students name various alkanes and write their formulas. Individual and group tasks can be used for evaluation.[5]
Module 2: Physical and Chemical Properties of Alkanes
As the name suggests, in this module, students will learn the physical and chemical properties of alkanes. This module may include the following instructional elements:
Topic: Melting and boiling points, physical states, solubility, combustion reactions, reactivity with other substances, and halogenation reactions of alkanes.
Activities: Conducting laboratory tasks in an interactive format to teach the key reactions of alkanes. Demonstrating combustion reactions practically. Observing chemical reactions in a virtual or real laboratory environment.
Assessment: Post-experiment reports or Q&A sessions to evaluate students' understanding of reactions and outcomes.[5]
Module 3: Isomerization of Alkanes
In this module, students will learn the essence of isomerization. This topic can be better understood through both theoretical and visual approaches.
Topic: Isomerization of straight-chain and branched alkanes. The concept of isomers and its explanation at the molecular level.
Activities: Constructing the structure of isomers using molecular models, identifying different types of isomers. Creating and naming various alkanes' isomers using interactive programs.
Assessment: Assignments involving naming and representing the structures of different isomers.[5]
Module 4: Industrial Applications of Alkanes
In the final module, students will gain knowledge about the use of alkanes in everyday life and industry.
Topic: The main industrial applications of alkanes, particularly their role in the fuel and petrochemical industries.
Activities: Assigning research tasks to learners on how alkanes are used in daily life. Group discussions, dialogues, and presentations for sharing knowledge.
Assessment: Group work or research projects showcasing practical examples of alkanes' applications.[5]
Conclusion
The application of modular teaching technologies to the alkanes section facilitates better comprehension by learners and increases their motivation to learn. This modular approach allows students to grasp the topic in segments. The knowledge gained from each module complements the next, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Each module enables monitoring the learning process more easily and individually for each student. At the same time, it assesses learners' achievements. Moreover, it should be noted that the application of modular teaching technology saves time and enhances effectiveness, both when learning new material and revising previous topics.
