TRANSLATION AND ICT COMPETENCE IN THE DIGITAL
WORLD
Abstract: The digital world has revolutionized the field of translation, demanding a new set of skills beyond traditional linguistic competence. This paper explores the concept of competence in translation within the digital landscape, highlighting the increasing importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) literacy. It examines the various sub-competencies required for translators to navigate this evolving environment, including computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, digital research skills, and information management. By analyzing the interplay between translation expertise and ICT proficiency, the paper argues for a holistic approach to translator training and development in the digital age.

The digital revolution has irrevocably transformed the landscape of translation. No longer is the translator solely a master of languages, meticulously crafting nuanced cultural bridges between source and target texts. Today's translator navigates a dynamic digital ecosystem, requiring a multifaceted skillset that seamlessly blends traditional linguistic expertise with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) literacy. This article delves into the concept of competence in translation within the digital world, exploring the crucial role of ICT and the various sub-competencies that empower translators to thrive in this ever-evolving environment.
For centuries, the translator's primary focus lay in language proficiency and cultural understanding. Translators meticulously analyzed source texts, deciphering the nuances of meaning and faithfully conveying them into the target language while preserving cultural context. However, the digital world has introduced a plethora of new challenges and opportunities. The sheer volume of content requiring translation, the rise of specialized fields and technical language, and the immediacy of communication necessitated by online platforms all demand a more versatile skillset.
Information and Communication Technology has become an indispensable tool in the modern translator's arsenal. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools have emerged as a game-changer, streamlining workflows and enhancing efficiency. These tools provide features like translation memories, which store previously translated segments, and terminology databases that ensure consistency in specialized fields. Proficiency in using these tools allows translators to handle larger volumes of work while maintaining high quality. However, the impact of ICT extends far beyond CAT tools.
Effective digital research capabilities are paramount in today's information-rich environment. Translators must be adept at navigating online resources, critically evaluating information sources, and efficiently extracting relevant and reliable content. This skillset is crucial not only for terminology verification but

Additionally, the digital world opens doors to new frontiers in translation, such as the localization of websites and mobile applications. Translators with a keen understanding of user experience (UX) principles can ensure that translated content not only conveys the message accurately but also resonates with the target audience within the specific digital context.
To prepare translators for the demands of the digital world, a paradigm shift is needed in translator training programs. While a strong foundation in languages and cultural studies remains essential, these programs must now integrate ICT literacy into their core curriculum. This includes hands-on training in CAT tools, developing digital research skills, and fostering information management
proficiency. Additionally, courses in website localization, UX principles, and the ethical considerations of online translation can further equip graduates with the necessary skillset to thrive in the digital age. By fostering a holistic approach that embraces both linguistic expertise and technological fluency, translator training programs can empower graduates to become valuable assets in the globalized digital landscape.

Аннотация: Цифровой мир произвел революцию в сфере перевода, потребовав нового набора навыков, выходящих за рамки традиционной лингвистической компетенции. В этой статье исследуется концепция компетентности в переводе в цифровой среде, подчеркивая растущую важность грамотности в области информационных и коммуникационных технологий (ИКТ). В нем рассматриваются различные дополнительные компетенции, необходимые переводчикам для работы в этой развивающейся среде, включая инструменты компьютерного перевода (CAT), навыки цифровых исследований и управление информацией. Анализируя взаимодействие между переводческим опытом и владением ИКТ, в статье приводятся доводы в пользу целостного подхода к обучению и развитию переводчиков в эпоху цифровых технологий.
