The COVID-19 pandemic has long affected different groups who move or have moved across borders. Among such vulnerable groups are international students, who have been negatively affected by the pandemic from early 2020 to the present. Highlighting a 2020 case study involving a national university in Japan, this qualitative study examines the hardship faced by international students during the COVID-19 pandemic and explains their attempts to overcome such challenges. Using data from 32 in-depth interviews with mainly graduate-level international students, this study establishes four categories of difficulties: living conditions, mental and human relationships, study environments, and future prospects, which includes career-related perspectives. Moreover, this study demonstrates that while it has confirmed most challenges addressed in the existing literature, international students have shown resilience in their attempts to surmount such difficulties. In other words, most students suffering from constraints on social behaviors and isolation have struggled to complete academic tasks, specifically continuing research and thesis writing. The current study further indicates the importance of improving the university environment to ensure that international students have access to public support and opportunities to communicate with others, ideally face-to-face. Future studies are needed to mediate the damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on students who study overseas.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND THEIR RESILIENCE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC A CASE STUDY OF JAPAN

Пандемия COVID-19 уже давно затрагивает различные группы людей, которые переезжают или пересекли границы. К числу таких уязвимых групп относятся иностранные студенты, на которых пандемия негативно повлияла с начала 2020 года по настоящее время. В этом качественном исследовании, освещающем тематическое исследование 2020 года с участием национального университета Японии, рассматриваются трудности, с которыми сталкиваются иностранные студенты во время пандемии COVID-19, и объясняются их попытки преодолеть такие проблемы. Используя данные 32 подробных интервью, в основном с иностранными студентами-выпускниками, это исследование устанавливает четыре категории трудностей: условия жизни, психические и человеческие отношения, среда обучения и перспективы на будущее, включая перспективы, связанные с карьерой. Более того, это исследование показывает, что, несмотря на то, что оно подтвердило большинство проблем, описанных в существующей литературе, иностранные студенты продемонстрировали стойкость в своих попытках преодолеть такие трудности. Другими словами, большинство студентов, страдающих от ограничений в социальном поведении и изоляции, с трудом выполняют академические задачи, особенно продолжая исследования и написание диссертаций. Текущее исследование также указывает на важность улучшения университетской среды, чтобы гарантировать, что иностранные студенты имеют доступ к общественной поддержке и возможности общаться с другими людьми, в идеале лицом к лицу. Необходимы дальнейшие исследования, чтобы уменьшить ущерб, причиненный пандемией COVID-19 студентам, обучающимся за границей.
