В ПАМЯТЬ О РИЧАРДЕ ХЕЛИИ: ОТ РЕДАКЦИИ
Мы очень рады, что многоуважаемые П. Горецкий предложил нам свою статью по фронтиру в Польше. И не менее рады, что он решил посвятить ее памяти такого замечательного человека, как Ричард Хелли. Весьма символично, что именно во втором номере нашего журнала появляется этот материал. Родился он 8 мая 1937 г. и умер 24 апреля 2009 г. Таким образом, именно второй номер совпадает и с его временем рождения (именно 8 мая мы и пишем эту биографическую справку, что тоже весьма символично, но мы не стремились к этому, и так просто совпало), и в 24 апреля было десять лет со дня его смерти.
Читая некрологи или памятные послания от его друзей и учеников невольно удивляешься тому, что при всем личностном переживании об утрате друга и учителя они во многом единодушны в оценке его качеств: профессиональных и личностных.
Как полагают многие ученики и коллеги Хелли, именно его стараниям русистика перешла на новый более высокий уровень, особенно это справедливо для истории России допетровского времени.
Весьма символично в преддверии отмечание Дня Победы, обратить внимание на то, что советской и русской историей Р. Хелли заинтересовался еще в детстве, читая книжки про советских партизан. Но так ли это на самом деле, сложно сказать, с уверенностью можно только утверждать, что интерес к русской истории он пронес всю свою жизнь. Это проявилось и в огромном количестве книг и статей, написанных по истории России, и в собирании уникальной коллекции книг, посвященных этой его любимой теме. Говорят, что у него была самая большая личная библиотека книг, посвященных нашей стране.
Но для памяти Ричарда Хелли в нашем журнале был еще один повод, имеющий непосредственное отношение к нам, - его работа в качестве главного редактора журнала «Russian History». В 1992 г. коллектив журнала выпустил специальный тематический номер, посвященный русскому фронтиру. Номер вышел по материалам конференции, которая состоялась в мае 1992 г. в Чикагском Университете. Организаторами конференции были Ричард Хелли и член нашей редакции Майкл Ходарковский из Университета Лойолы (Чикаго).
Видно, что редакция журнала «Russian History» долго и основательно готовилась к этому номеру - в 1992 г. был выпущен

только один - именно этот номер Vol. 19, No. 1-4, вместо традиционных 4 номеров. Он так и назывался - «Frontier in Russian History» - «Фронтир в русской истории». Ричард Хелли написал пространное вступление к этому номеру, и специальную статью: «The Impact of the Southern and Eastern Frontiers оf Muscovy on the Ulozhenie (Law Code) of 1649 Compared with the Impact of the Western Frontier», в которой анализировал влияние фронтира на Уложение 1649 г..
Номер этот был составлен из статей как зарубежных, так и российских ученых, принявших участие в вышеупомянутой конференции.
Как нам кажется, данный номер явился значительным вкладом в обсуждении проблемы фронтира в российской истории. Авторы этого номера пытались анализировать эту проблему с разных сторон, каждый рассматривал ее применительно к той тематике, которую изучал. Материал охватывал огромный период с 800 по 1800 гг.. Читая эти статьи и особенно вступительную статью Р. Хелли, понимаешь сколь сложная задача стояла перед редакцией, так как им приходилось лавировать с разными подходами, разным пониманием этой сложной проблемы, разной трактовкой исторических процессов и т.д.
Зная, как сложно даются такие номера, можно только восхищаться той работой, которую провела редакция журнала под руководством Р. Хелли.
Смерть Хелли 24 апреля 2009 г. явилась настоящей утратой, не только для членов его семьи и его друзей, но и для американской, да и российской науки.
Так что, как нам кажется, есть все основания почтить память этого замечательного ученого именно в майском номере нашего журнала.

IN MEMORIAM RICHARD HELLIE: FROM THE EDITORS
We are very glad that the Dr. P. Gorecki offered us his article on the Frontier in Poland. And not less pleased that he decided to dedicate it to the memory of such a wonderful person like Richard Hellie. It is very symbolic that this information appears in the second issue of our magazine. He was born on May 8, 1937 and died on April 24, 2009. note, which is also very symbolic, but we did that without any intents - it was simply coincided), and on the 24 of April it was ten years since the date of his death.
While reading obituaries from his friends, colleagues and former students we were surprised that at all personal experience about the loss of their friend and the teacher they in many respects are unanimous in an assessment of his qualities: professional and personal.
Many former students and colleagues of Hellie believe, it was due to his efforts that Russian studies moved to a new higher level, especially it is true for the history of Russia of the pre-Petrine period.
It is very symbolic on the eve of the victory Day, to pay attention to the fact that R. Hellie's interest in the Soviet and Russian history beg an in his childhood, when he was reading books about the Soviet partisans. It is difficult to say with certainty if it had been so in reality, we can only be sure that he carried this interest in Russian history for his whole life. This was manifested in a huge number of books and articles written by him on the history of Russia, and in the best collection in the USA of unique books devoted to his favorite topic - he had the largest personal library of books about Russian history.
But for the memory of Richard Hellie in our Journal was another reason that is directly related to us - his work as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal «Russian History» - in 1992, the Journal published a special thematic issue dedicated to the Russian Frontier. The issue was based on the materials of the conference, which took place in May 1992 at the University of Chicago. The conference was organized by Richard Hellie and a member of our editorial team Michael Khodarkovsky from Loyola University (Chicago).
It is clearly seen that the editorial Board of the «Russian History» for a long time and thoroughly prepared this issue - in 1992 they published only one issue - Vol. 19, No. 1/4, instead of the traditional 4. It's title was - «Frontier in Russian History». Richard Hellie wrote a lengthy Introduction to this issue and a special article: «The Impact of the Southern and Eastern Frontiers of Muscovy on the Ulozhenie (Law Code) of 1649 Compared with the Impact of the Western Frontier».
The issue was composed of articles by both foreign and Russian researchers who took part in the above-mentioned conference.
It seems to us that this issue was a significant contribution to the discussion of the Frontier problem in Russian history. The authors of this issue tried to analyze this problem from different points of view, each of them considered it in relation to the topic that he studied. The material covered a huge period from 800 to 1800. While reading these articles, and

especially the introductory article by R. Hellie, you understand how difficult the task was for the editor, as they had to maneuver with different approaches, different understanding of this complex problem, variety of interpretations of historical processes, etc.
Knowing how difficult it is to prepare such issues, we can only admire the work that was carried out by the Editorial Board of the «Russian History» under the leadership of R. Hellie.
Hellie's death on April 24, 2009 was a real loss, not only for his family and friends, but also for American and Russian science.
