THE USE OF GRAPHICAL GRAMMAR TECHNIQUE AND COLOR-CODED SYNTAX SYSTEM IN TEACHING GRAMMAR

Аннотация: this article explores the effectiveness of the Graphical Grammar Technique and Color-Coded Syntax System in improving students' grammatical skills within the communicative approach to grammar teaching at the high school level. Effective grammar usage is crucial for students to excel in academic writing. Traditional grammar teaching methods, however, often fail to engage students meaningfully. The Graphical Grammar Technique and Color-Coded Syntax System offer innovative ways to teach grammar by associating it with creative elements like visuals and color coding, which makes the learning process more engaging and accessible [1, p.28]. This approach aligns with contemporary educational research, which emphasizes creativity, student involvement, and practical applications of grammar in writing. Through this study, we aim to assess how these methods

improve grammatical skills, help students use complex structures correctly, and enhance their ability to produce coherent, well-structured written texts.

The significance of this study lies in its exploration of new, creative approaches for teaching grammar. By integrating visual elements and color-coded systems into the communicative methodology, these techniques not only teach grammar but also encourage students to actively engage with language in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing student's writing capabilities, specifically focusing on the use of varied grammatical structures.

The focus group for this study included thrstudents from the 11th grade. Each student displayed different levels of proficiency in grammar and writing:

• Student A: Exhibits strong skills in using grammatical structures correctly, especially in writing.

• Student B: Performs well depending on the specific grammar topic, but struggles with consistency.

• Student C: Faces challenges in remembering and applying grammatical structures correctly, particularly in complex sentences.

The goal of this research was to evaluate the impact of the Graphical Grammar Technique and Color-Coded Syntax System on the retention and correct use of grammar in students' writing. The study aimed to achieve the following objectives:

1. To understand and adapt the Graphical Grammar Technique and Color-Coded Syntax System for use in English lessons.

2. To identify a group of students for focused observation.

3. To design and standardize lesson plans that incorporate these methods for 11th-grade lessons.

4. To observe how students with varying language proficiencies engage with and retain the material.

5. To analyze students' written work, focusing on their use of grammatical structures like consequence of tenses and passive voice.

6. To present findings and integrate them into teaching practices, sharing insights with colleagues.

In this study, we used a combination of visual tools and color associations to facilitate grammar learning. The Graphical Grammar Technique was inspired by a design philosophy, creating concise representations of ideas through symbols and icons. Similarly, the Color-Coded Syntax System involved assigning specific colors to different tenses, helping students memorize and apply grammatical rules more easily.

Methods Implemented:

1. Icon-Based Grammar Practice: In this task, students were given icons representing different concepts (e.g., events, movies, actions) and were required to construct grammatically correct sentences using these icons [2]. For example:

Icon 1: Clock (representing a past event) - "The movie was directed by Christopher Nolan."

Icon 2: Document (representing a completed action) - "The contract was signed yesterday." This exercise helped students practice passive constructions and tense usage.

2. Color-Coded Tense Practice: Different tenses were associated with specific colors, such as:

• Past Perfect: Brown,

• Past Simple: Green,

• Past Continuous: Blue [3].

Students were tasked with filling in sentences with the correct tense using color-coded cues. For example: "After I had brainstormed for hours, I finally came up with a revolutionary idea." Students created their own sentences and checked them with peers to ensure accuracy.

3. Color-Icon Collaboration: This task combined icons with color associations to create more complex sentences. Students worked with cards containing both images and colors, which helped them form grammatically correct sentences using the appropriate tenses and structures.

4. Grammar Flow with Color and Icons: Students were provided with a text that had missing tenses, each gap linked to a specific icon. They needed to identify the correct tense based on the icon and then color-code the sentence accordingly. This activity helped reinforce tense agreement and the proper use of different verb forms.

Results

The assessment of students' written work focused on several criteria:

• The correct use of passive constructions.

• The proper application of complex sentences, specifically combinations of tenses such as Past Perfect + Past Simple and Past Continuous + Past Simple.

• Accurate usage of past tenses in context.

The results were as follows:

> Student A: Exceeded expectations by using more than the required number of passive voice constructions correctly and demonstrated strong mastery of tense agreements.

> Student B: Met the minimum requirements for passive constructions and tense agreements but had some issues with using Past Perfect correctly.

> Student C: Struggled with the use of passive constructions, particularly in the Past Perfect tense, but showed improvement in creating complex sentences despite occasional tense errors.

The study confirms that the Graphical Grammar Technique and Color -Coded Syntax System are valuable tools in improving students' grammatical skills, especially in academic writing. These methods proved to be effective in engaging students and enhancing their understanding of grammar in context. However, it is recommended that more time be dedicated to reinforcing complex structures, particularly the Past Perfect tense, as students struggled with its application.

For future implementation, teachers are advised to:

• Introduce the Graphical Grammar Technique gradually, ensuring students understand its principles before using it in practice.

• Integrate the Color-Coded Syntax System as part of a communicative approach to enhance its effectiveness.

• Focus on tenses that present particular challenges for students rather than attempting to cover all grammatical structures at once.

These methods can be adapted and applied to various learning environments, offering a creative and effective way to improve grammatical competence and academic writing skills in high school students.
