The Brontes sisters' contributions to English literature have had a lasting impact and their works are still widely read and studied today.
Three sisters Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell are born in Thornton, Yorkshire. Their mother dies early and the girls are taken care of by their aunt Elizabeth. In 1846, the sisters published a collection of poems at their own expense, in which they used the pseudonyms Carlotte, Emily, and Anne for the first time. All of the Brontes went on to produce collections of plays and poems that achieved varying degrees of popularity. The works of the sisters reflect the spiritual experiences of women and try to provide at least a partial solution to the topical issues of that time.
The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were the heyday of religious, historical, sporting, Irish, and comedic novels in English literature. One of the famous writers of that time was Elizabeth Leghorn Gaskell. She was born in Chelsea, London in 1810. Elizabeth was a famous English writer and author of several short stories, known for her sympathetic characters who faced social and moral problems. Gaskell's literary career began with the publication of her first novel, Mary Barton, in 1848. The novel explores the harsh realities of industrial life in Manchester in the early 19th century and deals with issues such as poverty, class conflict and social injustice. . "Mary Barton" noted Gaskell as a writer with a keen social conscience and a gift for depicting the lives of ordinary people.
One of Gaskell's most famous works is North and South (1854), which focuses on the conflict between industrial progress and traditional values in the fictional town of Milton. The novel tells the story of Margaret Hale, a young woman from a rural south of England who moves to the industrial north and encounters the struggles of the working class.
In addition to his novels, Gaskell also wrote many short stories, novels, and non-fiction. Elizabeth Gaskell died on November 12, 1865 in Hampshire, England.
