INTRODUCTION

In today's globalized world, teenagers consider learning foreign languages to be one of the important aspects of their education and development. Language abilities are significant not just in academics, but also in one's personal and career development, opening doors to various cultural and social exchanges. Yet, learning a new language can be difficult, particularly for adolescents whose cognitive abilities are still maturing.

The importance of this study is in creating successful teaching techniques that enhance language learning for adolescents, ultimately boosting their interest and involvement. Educational systems are placing more emphasis on techniques that encourage cognitive functions and aid in the retention of vast quantities of new material. Mnemonics is a method that enhances the efficiency and enjoyment of ISSN 3034-2627 95 coldsciencepublisher.com

memorizing and utilizing vocabulary. It consists of a variety of methods that aid in triggering memory by utilizing associations, visual imagery, rhymes, acronyms, and other cognitive strategies. The objective of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of mnemonic techniques that help teenagers learn foreign languages.

MAIN PART. THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF MNEMONICS

Mnemonics is a collection of methods and techniques aimed at improving the memorization and recall of information by creating associations, visual images, and other cognitive strategies. Its main goal is to simplify the memorization process by transforming information into a simpler and more easily reproducible form. This method is based on cognitive aspects of human perception, such as visual and associative memory.

The principles of mnemonics are built on establishing associative connections between new information and already familiar elements, such as visual, auditory, or logical images, which significantly ease the memorization process. This approach is complemented by visualization, which involves creating vivid and unusual mental images that help reinforce information in memory, making it more accessible for recall. The next step involves simplifying and structuring data, where information is reduced or grouped into simpler, more comprehensible elements, for example, through acronyms or segmentation into smaller blocks, which facilitates its perception and subsequent recall. Emotional reinforcement also plays an important role; when information is associated with emotionally significant images or events, it is memorized more quickly and retained longer, as emotions activate cognitive processes. The use of rhymed phrases and repeating information in a certain rhythm helps structure data and make it easier to remember, complementing and reinforcing the effects of other mnemonic techniques.

Mnemonics includes a variety of techniques aimed at enhancing memory and recall by activating different cognitive processes, each of which targets various aspects of memory and cognitive functions. These techniques help transform abstract or complex information into more comprehensible and reproducible forms, leveraging human memory and cognitive capabilities (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mnemonic techniques [1]

One such technique is abbreviation, which involves creating acronyms or initialisms from the first letters of words or phrases. This reduces the amount of information, making it more compact and memorable, which is especially useful when dealing with long sequences of data or terms. Equally important is visual representation, based on creating vivid mental images that capture the essence of the information to be remembered. Images rich in details and emotions easily anchor in memory and facilitate quick recall, as they engage associative and visual perception channels. Another common method is the acrostic, where words or phrases are structured so that their initial letters correspond to the elements to be remembered. This helps create a structured, logically organized unit of information that is easy to recall.

An effective way to structure information is grouping it into categories. Instead of memorizing a long list of words, data is grouped by common characteristics or categories, which reduces cognitive load and aids memory by creating meaningful blocks of information. Rhyming is also a helpful memory aid, creating rhythmic and phonetic patterns that help retain information. Rhymed phrases or lines form strong cognitive connections, making data recall easier, especially when remembering text or numeric information. Breaking information into smaller parts or sequences is another important technique, which helps structure large volumes of data by dividing it into logically organized, easily digestible blocks. This structuring significantly

reduces the difficulty of memorizing and facilitates recall. These mnemonic techniques work collectively to optimize the learning process, adapting information to the capabilities of human memory and perception.

THE ROLE OF MNEMONICS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Mnemonics plays a significant role in foreign language learning by having a comprehensive impact on students' cognitive and motivational processes. Using mnemonics makes the learning process more engaging and interactive, fostering greater interest in new material. Instead of monotonous memorization of words and grammar structures, students are involved in creating associations, visualizations, and rhymes, which stimulate their active participation and sustain their interest in language learning.

Mnemonics also significantly enhances the retention of new words and grammar structures. Employing various cognitive techniques, such as associations and visualization, transforms abstract lexical and grammatical units into memorable, easily reproducible images. For instance, memorizing complex words or phrases by linking them to familiar visual or auditory elements facilitates their retention in long-term memory and subsequent recall in speech. An important aspect of mnemonics is its influence on the development of creativity and critical thinking [2]. The process of creating associations and visual images requires students to seek out unconventional connections and use their imagination, which stimulates creative thinking. Moreover, the need to structure and analyze information to effectively apply mnemonic techniques promotes the development of critical thinking and analytical skills.

Mnemonics also accelerates learning by simplifying and structuring information. By turning complex language constructions into simple and memorable units, it helps learners absorb material more quickly and move to practical application. As a result, students can make significant progress in a short period, which boosts their confidence and encourages further language learning.

Overall, mnemonics is a powerful tool that not only improves material retention but also makes the learning process more engaging and efficient. However, for

maximum effectiveness, it is essential to consider that the success of mnemonic techniques is closely tied to various factors (table 1).

Table 1. Factors influencing the successful application of mnemonics [3, 4]

The factor Description Influence

Socio-psychologi cal Motivation, interest in learning the language and support from teachers and parents. Increases engagement and active use of mnemonic techniques when supported.

Individual cognitive skills Features of memory, information perception and concentration in adolescents. Adolescents with developed visual and associative memory demonstrate high efficiency of the methods.

Cultural and educational The influence of the cultural context and the peculiarities of the educational system on the perception and application of mnemonics. The effectiveness of the method depends on adaptation to cultural norms and teaching methods adopted in the system.

According to the author, the success of mnemonics largely depends on a comprehensive approach that considers not only the individual cognitive characteristics of teenagers but also social support, cultural factors, and the educational environment. Effective use of mnemonic methods requires adaptation to the specific conditions and needs of students, as well as professional training for educators to integrate such techniques into the learning process. Thus, the maximum effectiveness of mnemonics is achieved by taking into account the interplay of various factors and their impact on the learning process.

EXPERIENCES OF KYRGYZSTAN AND THE USA IN USING

MNEMONICS

In the context of globalization and the growing need for foreign language proficiency, educational systems in many countries strive to adapt to modern requirements by implementing effective strategies that facilitate learning.

In Kyrgyzstan, learning foreign languages, especially English, is a crucial part of the educational system. Teaching is primarily based on traditional methods, such as reading, memorization, and the grammar-translation method. However, with the development of international relations and increased accessibility to digital technologies, modern methods and programs aimed at improving education quality and aligning with global standards are being introduced. Mnemonics has begun to be

implemented in Kyrgyzstan schools as part of English language teaching [5]. Mnemonic techniques are used to simplify and structure educational material, particularly in the early stages, where it is essential to build students' basic vocabulary and understanding of core grammar structures. Teachers trained in these methods integrate mnemonic techniques into daily lessons, creating associations, using visualization, and incorporating game elements to reinforce learned material.

Various mnemonic methods are applied in Kyrgyzstan schools to help students memorize new vocabulary and grammar structures. For example, a popular technique is creating associations where new English words are linked with Kyrgyzstan equivalents or familiar visual images. This may include pictures of objects, actions, or even a related story that helps anchor the new word in memory. Rhymes and acrostics are also used to remember rules and sentence structures. For older students, visualization and the method of loci aid in memorizing more complex grammar constructions or long word lists. Lessons also include game-based exercises where students compete by using mnemonic techniques to recall and reproduce learned information.

Evidence of mnemonics' effectiveness in teaching teenagers' foreign languages can be seen in a 2021 study conducted in Kyrgyzstan. The research included 200 students who were separated into control and experimental groups. The control group utilized conventional approaches such as grammar-translation and vocabulary memorization, whereas mnemonic strategies were employed in the experimental group. Educators in the experimental group utilized visualization, associative images, and acrostics to aid in the retention of vocabulary and grammar. The findings indicated that students who utilized mnemonic strategies had much better retention rates than the control group. In the experimental group, the average vocabulary retention rate was 78%, while in the control group, it was only 56%, showing the clear benefit of using mnemonics for language acquisition. Additionally, mnemonics were found to be helpful for remembering grammar structures; students who employed visual and associative techniques had a better ability to recall intricate rules and structures compared to those in the conventional learning group. Teachers and students observed

that using mnemonic techniques increased engagement and motivation in learning. Students in the experimental group were more engaged in the learning experience, taking part in discussions and tasks that required them to create images and make associations [6]. This verifies that mnemonics not just improves memory but also boosts enthusiasm in the topic, an essential element in effective language acquisition among adolescents. Therefore, Kyrgyzstan's utilization of mnemonics to learn English indicates the potential and efficiency of this method, particularly in the early phases of education.

In the USA, mnemonics has long been an integral part of educational practice, particularly in the context of foreign language learning. American schools actively implement various programs that use mnemonic techniques to improve vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects of language acquisition. Programs such as the Foreign Language Assistance Program integrate mnemonics into lessons to help students memorize language material more quickly and effectively. Additionally, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages actively supports mnemonics in its guidelines, emphasizing the importance of associative and visual approaches to enhance foreign language proficiency [7].

A study conducted in 2022 by Erin K. Hill confirms the effectiveness of mnemonic techniques in improving vocabulary retention among English as a Second Language learners in the USA. This study focused on various mnemonic techniques, such as the keyword method and visual mnemonics, evaluating their impact on vocabulary acquisition and retention in teenage students. The study found that mnemonics significantly improved vocabulary retention. Students who used these methods achieved higher scores than those who did not. It was noted that students generally viewed mnemonic strategies positively, finding them more engaging and effective than traditional memorization methods. These results suggest that mnemonic approaches can be a valuable addition to English language learning programs in American schools, providing evidence-based evidence of their integration into the practice of teaching foreign languages [8].

The experience of the USA demonstrates that mnemonics is an effective tool in foreign language teaching. Implementing mnemonic methods not only improves material retention but also boosts student motivation and interest in language learning. Studies conducted in American schools show positive results and recommend widespread use of mnemonics in educational programs.

Mnemonics is one of the methods used in foreign language education to enhance retention and student engagement. It allows complex language structures and new vocabulary to be transformed into vivid, memorable images, promoting faster material acquisition and long-term retention. The main advantage of mnemonics lies in its ability to improve memory by activating various cognitive channels, such as visual and auditory memory. This approach makes language learning more enjoyable and engaging for students, turning it into an interactive experience. Teenagers involved in creating associations, rhymes, or visual images show greater interest and activity in lessons, positively impacting their performance and motivation. Furthermore, these methods foster cognitive and creative abilities, helping students independently structure information and find effective ways to recall it.

However, there are challenges and limitations associated with using mnemonics. Successful use of this method requires adaptation to students' individual cognitive characteristics, as different memory types and motivation levels can affect perception and method effectiveness.

CONCLUSION

Mnemonics is a powerful tool that enhances the quality of foreign language acquisition among teenagers. It not only structures information but also makes the memorization process more enjoyable and effective, which is crucial in the modern educational process. The use of mnemonic techniques, such as visualization, associations, and rhymes, activates various cognitive processes, including visual and associative memory, thereby increasing the volume and quality of retained information.

The experiences of Kyrgyzstan and the USA show that mnemonics can be successfully integrated into educational programs, achieving high academic performance among students. However, for its successful application, it is important to

consider cultural, social, and individual student characteristics, as well as provide teacher training to adapt methods to specific conditions. Thus, mnemonics, with proper and consistent implementation, can significantly improve foreign language learning outcomes, creating a more engaging and effective learning environment.
