Anatoly Faenov joined the community of atomic and plasma physicists at the Lebedev Physical Institute in the early 1970ies. The epoch being marked by expectations of sweeping progress in ICF, X-ray laser development, and research into matter under extreme condition in laser-driven laboratory facilities, complexes of novel diagnostic methods and techniques had to be invented as a parallel process. X- ray spectroscopy was considered to be one the most powerful instruments for the study of high temperature plasmas, and Anatoly found his calling in this particular field.

Presented below is a sketchy list of studies, which Anatoly performed with colleagues over the 45 years of his scientific carrier:

- The development of a new class of imaging spectroscopic techniques based on the spherically bent crystals for high precision x-ray spectroscopy, spectromicroscopy, projection, and self-emitting objects imaging, monochromatic backlighting, collimation and focusing of x-ray radiation;

- Precise measurements of spectral band wavelengths, measurements of ionization potentials, and identification of lines, collection and systematization of spectroscopic data on spectra of multicharged ions; the creation of the online factual atomic Database SPECTR-W , which serves as the world's largest source of information on spectral properties of multicharged ions.

- Investigations of ns-, ps-, fs- laser-produced plasmas in interactions with solids, clusters,

porous materials, and structured targets in

the 1012 - 1021 W/cm2 laser

intensity range and the

development of new diagnostics methods of these plasmas;

- Investigations of ablation, modification, and nanostracturing proceses in materials under the impact of soft x-ray laser irradiation;

- The development of a submicron resolution imaging method based on photoluminescent LiF detector which, in some cases, makes it possible to significantly enhance radiographic and phase-contrast imaging diagnostics in EUV and hard x-ray spectral range.

An outstanding physicist, a brilliant experimentalist, a generator of ideas, an enthusiast and a leader, Anatoly had an amazing talent for building broad collaborations. One of his character traits was a recognized ability to intuitively identify promising themes and to share his vision with peers at various forums as well as in the course of personal communication. At all times, he easily found avenues for refining methods and techniques and thereby achieving exceptional results.

Anatoly performed hundreds of joint experiments at dozens of laboratories across the world, worked fruitfully with theoreticians from many countries, and authored over 500 papers in high-impact journals. Some of his major achievements will be reviewed in the presentation.
