К ЮБИЛЕЮ ГЛАВНОГО РЕДАКТОРА
В этом году Эдуард Израилевич Колчинский, главный редактор нашего журнала и директор Санкт-Петербургского филиала Института истории естествознания и техники им. С.И. Вавилова, в стенах которого ведёт свою работу редакционная коллегия, отметит замечательный юбилей — 70 лет, большую часть которых он отдал истории науки, истории биологии и филиалу.
Коллеги и друзья Эдуарда Израилевича не могли оставить это замечательное событие без внимания, и совершенно логичным представилось, что поздравления Э.И. Колчинскому необходимо поместить на страницах журнала, главным редактором и идейным вдохновителем которого он является.
Поздравления расположены отнюдь не в порядке значимости поздравителя или его близости к юбиляру. Все те, кто с теплом откликнулся на сообщение о грядущих юбилейных торжествах (вернее, все, кто успел сделать это до сдачи номера в издательство), в равной степени важны и значимы. Все они в течение многих лет знают Эдуарда Израилевича, со многими, да пожалуй что со всеми, связано научное сотрудничество, благодаря которому удалось в кратчайшие сроки после тяжёлого времени застоя и чехарды, последовавших за пертурбациями в российской политической жизни начала 1990-х гг., вывести филиал на передовые позиции истории науки на постсоветском пространстве. Э.И. Колчинский всегда настаивал на том, что международные контакты чрезвычайно важны для историка науки, в особенности для молодых сотрудников Филиала, многие из которых являются учениками юбиляра и которые смогли включиться в международные сети во многом благодаря налаженным личным контактам Эдуарда Израилевича и его значимости в профессиональном сообществе.

I have heard that it's about to your 70th birthday. As both your friend and your collaborator, I would like, on behalf of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHNS/CAS) and myself, to give you my best wishes and extend to you my gracious appreciation to all of your brilliant achievements you have received!
Biology is one of the disciplines developing in a tremendous speed since the past few decades, so is the history of biology. There are an increasing number of scholars dedicating to the modern history of biology research, in which the contributions to the development of biology made by Russian scholars, as well as from Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), of course, could not be neglected. Being the world-renowned historian of biology, you, highly respected by the peers, have made significant contributions to this research field and published numerous influential articles and monographs since the past few decades.
The RAS (as well as the Academy of Sciences of the USSR) had played and will continue playing an important role in the development of modern science and technology. It provides us a typical case for the institutional history research with its own extraordinary history. Your decades' dedication to the research of history of Academy of Sciences and the history of Russian science have received significant results, which gives the international scientific community and scholars an increasingly deep understanding towards RAS as well as Russian science.
Based on the research institutes such as the Academia Sinica, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in the 1949 by the P. R. China government. Since then, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and RAS had already become the important partner of the CAS. The founders of the IHNS/CAS had visited and launched academic exchanges with the Institute for the History of Science and Technology (IHST), RAS since 1950s. In the recent twenty years, historians of science and technology from both Institutes carried on exchanges and cooperation actively. Today, under your initiative, IHST and IHNS have co-organized conferences or workshops, co-researched on the history of Academy of Sciences, and co-published academic papers and books in Russian and in English, which have made great contributions to the international academic community.
I believe that, under your leadership, St.-Petersburg Branch of Institute for the History of Science and Technology will greet a more brighter future. Also, under your support, both of our Institutes will continue launching a variety of cooperation and receiving wonderful outcomes.

Dear Eduard,
It is a great pleasure and honour for me to send you this Letter of congratulation on the occasion of your seventieth birthday. It gives me the opportunity to write about the way we made the acquaintance of each other and how we became friends many years ago.
In 1984 I came as a guest professor to your Institute for the History of Science and Technology in St. Petersburg for the first time in order to study Leonhard Euler's manuscripts, especially his mathematical notebooks. I cannot remember whether we met on this occasion. The Russian colleagues who looked after me were the highly esteemed Mrs. Kopelevich and Mrs. Oshigova.
This situation changed when I came back on July 4, 1998 in order to speak with you in your capacity as director of this institute about a possible cooperation between some of your co-workers and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, the former Prussian Academy of Sciences, represented by me as its ordinary member in order to publish Leibniz's scientific, medical, and technical writings. From the very beginning you friendly supported this project. Soon after my visit to St. Petersburg you came to Berlin, thanks to the DAMU (German Association of Friends of the Lomonosov University), where I heard your lecture.
On November 20, 1998 president Osipov of the Russian Academy of Sciences and president Simon of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences signed the official contract of cooperation between our two academies in Moscow. The German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) granted the necessary financial means in order to buy a computer equipment for the Russian co-worker, to pay an honorarium, and to make travels to Berlin possible.
According to your proposal Alena Kuznetsova began her fruitful work for the Leibniz edition on June 1, 2000 supported by the latinist Ekaterina Basargina. From now on I came several times to your institute in order to meet you and your co-workers. I had the privilege to work in the impressing library of your institute. Unfortunately Alena Kuzenetsova died on September 25, 2005 so that she did not see the publication of the first volume of Leibniz's scientific, medical and technical writings that appeared in 2009: Her name is mentioned among those of the editors of this volume.
Yet, we remained in contact and met many times on various occasions, especially during the International Congresses of the History of Science in Beijing, Budapest, and Manchester last year. On December 7, 2012 you had been elected Corresponding Member of the International Academy of the History of Science, that is, during my presidentship. Your membership diploma is signed by me. What a wonderful coincidence! Hence you participated in the General Assembly of the members of this International Academy. In my capacity as its president I was invited to participate in the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Institute of the History of Sciences and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences your institute belong to. Hence we met in Moscow at the end of February 2012 where I spoke about the International Academy and especially emphasized that Russian written papers are accepted for publication in its journal Archives Internationales d'Histoire des Sciences. In the meantime Dimitri Bayuk's Russian translation of Robert Halleux's short description of the history and tasks of this International Academy has appeared in the Voprosy istorii estestvoznaniya i tekhniki 3 (2013), 171-173.
I am confident that we will continue our fruitful cooperation in the future being happy about our friendship since many years. You are a magnificent scholar, fine colleague, and good friend. Happy birthday to you!

Основная проблематика Вашей научной деятельности — изучение истории Российской Академии наук. Вы явились одним из инициаторов создания многотомного издания «Летопись РАН» (1724-1934).
В подготовленной под Вашим руководством коллективной монографии «Академическая наука в Санкт-Петербурге в ХШ1-ХХ веках» (СПб., 2003) дан объективный анализ научного вклада академического сообщества Санкт-Петербурга в развитие России.
Мировую известность получили Ваши монографии «Эволюция эволюций» (СПб., 1977), «Эволюция биосферы» (СПб.,1990), «В поисках советского "союза" философии и биологии. Дискуссии и репрессии конца 1920-х — начала 1930-х гг.» (СПб., 1999).
Одна из многих замечательных граней Вашего таланта — педагогическая деятельность. Вы воспитали целую плеяду молодых учёных — будущую гордость российской науки. Ваши прекрасные лекции и доклады на научных конгрессах и конференциях знают и помнят учёные университетов Германии, США, Англии и Китая, студенты и преподаватели высших учебных заведений Санкт-Петербурга и многих городов России. И по сей день Вы выполняете большую работу по координации историко-научных исследований: являетесь членом секции эволюционной биологии научного совета РАН и входите в состав Санкт-Петербургской комиссии РАН по разработке научного наследия В.И. Вернадского.
Научные результаты Вашей плодотворной деятельности получили заслуженную оценку у правительства Российской Федерации, среди которых награды, грамоты и благодарности Президиума РАН и СПб НЦ РАН, медали К.М. Бэра и В.И. Вернадского.

Remarks on the 70th Birthday of Eduard Izrailevich Kolchinskii
It is a singular pleasure to add my congratulations on the occasion of the seventieth birthday of my friend Eduard Izrailevich Kolchinskii, the heart, head and soul of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
There are so many notable contributions and attainments in Professor Kolchinskii's life in science thus far that it would take far more space than allotted to list them, let alone discuss them
in the depth that they deserve. It seems, though, that they might be grouped into the following categories: contributions to the history of biology in Russia and generally; his centrality in the leadership of the history of science in Russia; his inestimable contributions to international collaboration in the field of the history of science; and his personal, human generosity and friendship.
Eduard Izrailevich's contributions to the history of biology themselves are not for the intellectually timid or ill-equipped. His work "V poiskakh sovetskogo 'soiza' filosofii i biologii" (In Search of the Soviet 'Union' of Philosophy and Biology) explores the range of ways in which distinctively Soviet interpretations of Marxist philosophical principles affected and constrained the development of biological theory, particularly within genetics and developmental biology. Deeper still, and much underestimated, is his "Evoliutsiia biosfery" (Evolution of the Biosphere), inspired by and moving beyond an earlier work he co-authored with his mentor, Kirill Mikhailovich Zavadskii. Here he explores not only the history of the idea of the biosphere, but a history of the biosphere itself, attempting to show how feedback mechanisms changed the very contexts in which further evolution took place. This is a work that deserves to be periodically re-read.
As director of the Saint Petersburg branch of the Institute of the History of Science and Technology, Eduard Izrailevich was central to nurturing and sustaining a cohort of historians of science who themselves have made great contributions. However, we in the United States and abroad know him as a key Russian anchor, especially from the time of M.S. Gorbachev's glasnost' to recent years, who worked together with my mentor Loren Graham to support and participate in a series of remarkable Soviet-American conferences and workshops in the history of science. I look back on those times as the best in my life.
From personal experience I know that the institute was an unvaryingly welcoming place for me and for a host of other foreign researchers, thanks to the leadership of Eduard Izrailevich. Among the fruits of the collaboration he promoted were a number of edited volumes on German-Russian scientific relations and some particularly notable international anthologies on Soviet science — "Na perelome" (At the time of the great break) and "Za 'zhelezom zanavesom'" (Behind the 'Iron Curtain').
Finally, on a personal note, Eduard Izrailevich Kolchinskii has been central among the scholars who have served as an inspiration for me, along with Loren Graham. His encouragement, kindness, enthusiasm, hospitality and high standards have been the right mix of nourishment for me and I'm sure, countless visiting scholars. From the depths of my heart, I wish Eduard Izrailevich a wonderful birthday and many many more!

Memories from France
Until 2009, I knew Professor Kolchinsky through its intense research activity and the many books he had on the history of German - Russian scientific relations. His work made with the Germans in this area and their international influences were impressive. Hence, it seemed quite natural to turn to him when we should deal with the history of Franco - Russian scientific relations. It is well known that there are long special relationships between our two countries in both cultural and scientific fields. However, joint historical studies on this issue carried out by researchers of the two countries remained rare. Furthermore, I hoped for a long time, one way or another, to express in my own research in history of science my secret admiration for Russian culture.
When Jean-Gael Barbara and I expressed our project to Professor Kolchinsky during a visit to St. Petersburg, he immediately approved it with enthusiasm. Thus, a successful international collaboration could engage from 2009, in a spirit of friendship. Professor Kolchinsky share with us the vast experience he has in the history of international scientific relations, within the research program of the Research Group International EFRENIC (Epistemology and History of Franco-Russian Exchanges in Neurophysiology in the International Context, XIX-XX centuries), led by the French CNRS. We owe him and his team the extension of our theme, hitherto restricted to neurophysiology, toward the natural history and the evolution. It was due to his valuable scientific network that it was possible to examine the various aspects of Franco-Russian relations in the entire biological sciences. Several scientific meetings including French and Russian scientists were held at the College de France in Paris (2010) and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (2011 and 2012), in a very friendly spirit. This work resulted in several books, one published by the Russian publisher Nestor Historia (2012), the other will be soon by the French publisher Hermann.
Each time, Eduard showed warmth and kindness. He worked diligently to facilitate the sessions and the contacts with researchers in Vavilov Institute of the History of Science and Technology. The particularly fraternal welcome by colleagues of St. Petersburg will remain forever in our memories. It is clear that the work would not have been possible without you, Eduard: I am infinitely grateful for that.
This is why, dear Eduard, I wish the extension of our fruitful cooperation. Thank you once again for all your help. Now, on this happy occasion of your 70th birthday, I am very pleased to offer you most cordial and sincere good wishes, in my own name and in the name of all the French colleagues.

Our cooperation with Eduard I. Kolchinsky
Working at the University of Leipzig (Germany) I began in 1990 a research-project about the life and work of the naturalist Georg Wilhelm SteLLer (1709-1746). One reason for this project was that SteLLer was a student in my hometown Halle and a teacher at the Francke Foundation there from where he went to Russia in 1734 probably with the goal to participate in the 2nd Kamchatka-expedition which was already under way since 1733. By hearsay I found out that the access to Russian archives, where materials about Steller are preserved, was much easier for foreigners than before. With the help of some friends in Moscow I decided to go to Saint Petersburg in 1991 to look for myself although I didn't know anyone there.
The first scientist I met there was Eduard I. Kolchinsky. As a historian of biology he was interested in the works of Steller too. He introduced me to several colleagues of his institute, to the representatives of the Archives of the Academy of Sciences and other institutions and asked them to give me help in our research-project. He organized a plenary meeting at the Institute of History of Sciences and Technology in which I in a lecture could outline our planned project which was generally welcomed but not without some sceptical questions. This was the beginning of a fruitful cooperation in which I did work more than 10 years twice ot thrice a year for several weeks in Russian archives in Saint Petersburg, Moscow and other places in Russia. Through funding by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) I had the possibility to invite some Russian colleagues to Germany. The first whom I could welcome in Leipzig and Halle was Eduard I. Kolchinsky. During his stay here we had a lot of discussions of our joint project. He got the possibility to use
our archives and libraries for his special interest in the history of evolution-research and met with colleagues who had similar interests. With his help I could develop a broad research-network with many Russian collaborators including younger ones.
A highlight in the Russian-German scientific cooperation was a big exhibition in 1996 commemorating the life and work of Georg Wilhelm Steller and the participants of the 2nd Kamchatka expedition which was organized at the Francke-Foundation in Halle. A decisive role in this exhibition did play the late Prof. Paul Raabe, then director of the Francke-Foundation, and of course, the cooperation of archives and museums from Russia, Denmark and Germany. The first International Steller-Conference in the same year in Halle with more than 100 participants working in the fields of history, geography, geology, botany, zoology and ethnology of Siberia and Russia gave new insights of the importance of the historic research relating to the achievements of the participants of the 2nd Kamchatka-Expedition. In preparation of these events we began in 1994 with the organization of workshops in Halle with ca. 15 participants from Russia and other countries in which many aspects of the Russian-German scientific cooperation especially in the 18th century were discussed. These yearly workshops became later the name "German-Russian meetings" and were continued for 20 years until this year. Since the foundation of the International Georg-Wilhelm-Steller-Society in 2007 this society took an active role in organizing those workshops. In contrast to the usual scientific conferences apart from papers presented the programs included meetings of the participants with German colleagues and friends in a familiar atmosphere and an excursion to places of historical meaning for Russian-German relations.
Funded partially by grants from the DFG (German Research Community) our research project could be continued for several years. One of the results was the publication series "Quellen zur Geschichte Sibiriens und Alaskas aus russischen Archiven" (Sources of the history of Siberia and Alaska from Russian archives) by the Francke-Foundation and the Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences Saint Petersburg (in cooperation with colleagues from Denmark) in which until now 5 volumes in Russian and 7 volumes in German were published with documents and manuscripts mainly from the 2nd Kamchatka expedition.
Although all these results could only achieved by the joint efforts of many persons not mentioned here we are very thankful for the outstanding contribution of Eduard I. Kolchinsky by giving valuable advice and his participation in our projects. For this the Steller-Society elected him already three years ago as an honorary member of the society. We want to congratulate him to his 70th birthday with the hope that our friendship and cooperation will continue for many years into the future.

Широкой и научной общественности в Украине и за рубежом хорошо известно имя Эдуарда Израилевича Колчинского — известного современного биолога-эволюциониста, философа, историка науки, критика, публициста, педагога и общественного деятеля.
Пятьдесят лет творческого труда — с горячим сердцем, с полной отдачей себя научному и общественному долгу, всегда на переднем крае больших событий в жизни, незаменимый в кругу друзей — таков Эдуард Израилевич, как считают его украинские коллеги, глубокий мыслью и щедрый душой человек.
Перелистываешь страницы десятков книг, более 600 научных статей, обзоров, очерков, рецензий, эссе и воспоминаний, публицистических сочинений, переводов научных трудов, учебных пособий - удивляешься неутомимой энергии творческого духа Эдуарда Израилевича, его придирчивой любознательности и одержимости исследователя, умению разнообразно и объективно разобраться в сложных сегодняшних и прошлых проблемах общественно-политической, культурно-образовательной жизни, философии и истории естествознания.
Главное, что характеризует его творческое наследие — это научная добросовестность, новизна материала, эрудиция и, несомненно, дарование исследователя. По другому не назовешь это характерное для творческого почерка Эдуарда Израилевича совершенное знание истории исследуемых проблем и историко-научного процесса в целом, объединение теоретической глубины анализа и принципиальной оценки историко-научных и философских явлений с умением до совершенства войти, «вжиться» в мир естественнонаучных образов, тонко воспринять (и помочь воспринять читателю) их своеобразность и неповторимость.
И еще на одну черту хочу обратить внимание - на большую человеческую доброту, чуткость, интеллигентность, чистоту в человеческих отношениях и отсутствие в отношениях с другими самой малейшей позы. Он как-то незаметно умеет поддержать, подбодрить, поделиться своими знаниями и опытом.
Для меня, как и моих коллег, историков науки с Украины, в трудах Эдуарда Израилевича зафиксирован богатейший опыт историко-научной, публицистической, учебной и вообще культурно-образовательной деятельности. Это является неоценимым достижением, что не может быть надлежащим образом не использовано молодыми учёными и аспирантами. Для них - это открытая творческая мастерская умудрённого жизнью автора, школа собирателя нового и аналитика достигнутого, образец настойчивости и трудолюбия, без чего не мыслится настоящий специалист, философ и историк науки.
Сегодня Эдуард Израилевич Колчинский — учёный, педагог, по-прежнему творческий человек — в разгаре творческих сил и энергии. Он и далее — руководитель Института, он за трибуной лектора, за рабочим столом, ведь новые научные проблемы стучат в окошко его кабинета. Profound search of symmetry in the past and present
I would run into Professor Eduard Kolchinsky from time to time at international conferences devoted to the history of science. It was not hard to notice his striking appearance, especially because he was always surrounded by a number of associates with whom he would speak animatedly. Later, when I met him in person - I believe it was in Beijing in 2005, at the International Congress for the History of Science - I saw that his spirit was equally distinctive, and that it was a true pleasure talking with him. He is one of those scientists whose experience goes beyond the usual academic divisions, and he is just as willing to talk about the history of science
as he is about its future. Our brief conversations were so important to me that I Looked on the internet to discover what our esteemed colleague had written and spoken about. I found what I expected - a range of topics about different aspects of science and science policy which showed to me how privileged I was to have been given the opportunity to personally hear about them from Professor Kolchinsky.
During these conversations, especially at the EuLer's memorial conference in St. Petersburg, where I had been invited by Professor Kolchinsky in 2007, the idea to design a joint research project was spontaneously conceived. The very idea was recognition not only for me, but for the Serbian history of science. The Institute for the History of Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences is an unattainable ideal for aLL historians of science in Serbia. In conversation, we quickly realized what the project needed to be based on - scientific and educational ties between Serbia and Russia. There are multiple works that deal with the political and cultural relations between Serbia and Russia, but no one had explored the ties in education and science. In order to prepare this work, we invited Professor Kolchinsky in 2007 to the University of Kragujevac to hold a Lecture on the history of science and science policy. His Lecture, delivered to a packed auditorium, was a great success, not onLy because we were given a broader and more unique perspective on things, but aLso because such a profound understanding was coming from the East, not the West, of whose coLoniaL poLicy travesties Serbs have tired. SubsequentLy, a Lecture was heLd in BeLgrade at the KoLarac Foundation. Prof. KoLchinsky gave several interviews where he charmed as an interLocutor not onLy of great erudition, but aLso as someone capabLe of charming a TV audience.
Very soon after that, in 2008, Professor KoLchinsky organized a meeting at the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg regarding Russian-Serbian reLations in the fieLd of science and education from the 19th to the first haLf of the 20th century, which was attended by researchers from Russia and Serbia. His institute next year promptLy pubLished Proceedings - Российско-сербские связи в области науки и образования XIX - первая половина XX в. It was a great success, especiaLLy as we were the first to broach the topic. But Professor KoLchin-sky did not stop there. He suggested that we shouLd pubLish Proceedings not onLy in Russian (we did in 2009), but aLso, more extensive, in EngLish, what we reaLLy did in 2010 - under the titLe The Cycles of Distant Accord: Towards an Anthropology of Russian - Serbian Relations. It became the first pubLication on Russian-Serbian reLations pubLished in EngLish. It cLearLy shows the symmetry of Russian and Serbian cuLture, simiLar to hermetic accord of micro and macro worLds. Everything that has happened to Russia, from ancient times to the present day, first happened in Serbia. Whoever is aware of this wiLL be at a great advantage. Thanks to the cooperation with Prof. KoLchinsky, we have given a modest contribution from which the seeds can generate a Large pLant. Without Professor KoLchinsky, his good wiLL and profound insights, aLL of that wouLd not be possibLe.
Wishing to set the symboLic miLestone of his contribution and our coLLaboration, we were proud to eLect him an honorary member of the Serbian Society for the History of Science. This is the most we are abLe to give in the modest circumstances in which we find ourseLves, but it is the Least he deserves because he has opened a new chapter in Serbian-Russian cuLturaL reLations, which wiLL become even more meaningfuL as time progresses. I am reaLLy gLadsome that I have opportunity to know him and to assist him in one of his achievements. And I do hope from this past future wiLL come out.

Zubr of the History of Biology in Russia to Eduard I. Kolchinsky on his 70th Birthday
I am deeply grateful to Eduard Israilewitsch with whom I have corresponded since 1997. We first met during a conference of the Deutsche Gesellschafter Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie (DGGTB) in Tübingen. Some months earlier, I had finished my PhD thesis on Gerhard Heberer (1901-1973) and in Tübingen we discussed some historical problems in the development of the Synthetic Theory of Evolution (STE), one of Eduards special topics. Later we organized an annual meeting in his office in St. Petersburg, universitetskaja nab. 5. Our first co-authored paper was published in 2000 on the STE (Hoßfeld et al., 2000), and the latest collaborative work with Eduard was our multiauthor book Evoliutzionnyj Sintez: granizy, perspektivy, alternativy (Levit et al., 2013). During this time I had the opportunity to publish (together with other German colleagues) different papers in his series, such as Naperelomje: Otechestvennaya nauka vpervoipolovineXX veka, Russko-nemeckije svjazi v biologii i medicine I-IV or Evolutionnaja biologija. Our last common publication dated from his famous monograph on Создатели современного эволюционного синтеза. коллективная монография (Kolchinsky, Hoßfeld, 2012).
Eduard has always been eager to discuss scientific problems with anybody, whether an experienced colleague or a hesitant graduate student. He also answers enquiries without delay and promptly reviews manuscripts in detail for friends, students and journal editors and supports young colleagues in Russia, Germany etc.

His contributions will continue to spawn discussions among biologists, historians and philosophers of biology worldwide (Kolchinsky 2006a, 2006b). I have called him, in the tradition of Nikolaj V. Timof eff-Ressovsky, the "Zubr" of the History of Biology tradition in Russia (Granin, 1988).

Eduard I. Kolchinsky, Editor-in-Chief of the Studies in the History of Biology and director of the St. Peterburg Branch of the Institute for the History of Science and Technology, will celebrate a remarkable 70 years, most of them devoted to the history of science and history of biology and our Institute. Colleagues and friends of Eduard Kolchinsky would not want to miss this event.
