Abstract: paralinguistic features are divided into 3 types. They are: kinetic, para phonetic and graphic. This article is devoted to paralinguistic features of English language in written speech which is a part of graphic paralinguistic features. In this article we tried to give examples of paralinguistic features in written speech using some novels of English and American writers. And to give examples how can we express facial expressions and emotions using words.
Keywords: facial expressions, emotions, paralinguistic features, graphic, written and spoken speech.
In English we can express feelings liprotest, fear, agreement silently and use the words like "dumply", "silent", "without speaking" in written speech.
Here are examples of agreement and fear.
Aahz started to open his mouth, then closed it without speaking. It's probably the only time I've seen Aahz agree, even by silence, that there existed any higher principles than greed. Still, Bunny was arguing his side of the fight, so he let it ride. (Asprin Robert, Sweet Mythtery of Life p. 17) [1].
In danger of being speared on the end of an umbrella by a bearded giant, Uncle Vernon's courage failed again; he flattened himself against the wall and fell silent. (J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone p. 43) [2].
By the parts of face like eyes, eye brows, nose, mouth we can express astonishment, joy, fear, inspiration, sadness, anger, hope without using words.
We can express fear by opening mouth and eyes widely, licking lips, changes in glance:
Within a minute one of them came into the cave. He looked at me, but he came no closer. His eyes grew wide. His mouth opened. He had a look of terror on his face. He looked behind me for moment and then fled. (Edgar Rice Burroughs - А Princess of Mars p. 2)
He licked his lips, called again, and when no one answered a second time he said casually, 'Grab that, would you, Thad?' (Forever autumn -Mark Morris p. 9)
The figure opened its mouth, showing a perfect set of white fangs (Autonomy - Daniel Blythe p. 50).
Her eyes bulged in fear. (Autonomy - Daniel Blythe p. 168)
A pale young man made his way forward, very nervously. One of his eyes was twitching. (J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - p. 54) [2].
Madam Hooch was bending over Neville, her face as white as his. (J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - p. 116) [2].
The words hung in the air as she stared at me with eyes that had suddenly gotten very large. (Asprin Robert, Sweet Mythtery of Life p. 24) [1].
Thad turned, his pale blue eyes wide behind his spectacles. 'Let's investigate.' (Forever autumn - Mark Morris p. 4) [3].
Miss Devonshire's eyes were cold and hard. 'Just do it, Doctor.' (Autonomy - Daniel Blythe p175) [4].
'Aw, c'mon, man,' said Scott, screwing up his face, 'don't be such a girl. What's the worst that can happen?' (Forever autumn - Mark Morris p. 7).
The Doctor looked at the old lady and raised his eyebrows as if inviting her to answer (Forever autumn - Mark Morris p. 43) [3].
Eloise said nothing, merely raised an eyebrow. She was evidently waiting for an explanation.
Martha sighed. 'It's Etta Helligan.'Now Eloise raised both eyebrows. 'Etta? Well, in that case, would you care to tell me why you brought her back here? You and that doctor friend of yours kidnapping our old people?' (Forever autumn - Mark Morris p. 65) [3].
The Doctor grinned. There we are.' He raised his eyebrows at the crowd. 'You know, vampires... they're really rubbish, aren't they? I mean there are, what, six... seven ways to kill them?' (Autonomy - Daniel Blythe p. 51) [4].
