Eliseeva Tatyana, editor-in-chief of the EdaPlus.info project E-mail: eliseeva.t@edaplus.info

Abstract. Papaya juice is an exotic drink with many health benefits. By systematically consuming delicious fresh juice, you can significantly increase immunity, improve well-being, correct your figure and prevent the development of many dangerous diseases, including diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver.

Key words: papaya, papaya juice, useful properties, contraindications, composition, calorie content

The tropical fruit of the melon or breadfruit tree, called fruit bomb in Cuba, belongs to the botanical classification of berries due to the presence of a large number of seeds. Fans of exotic fruits, of course, guessed that we are talking about papaya, the ripe fruits of which have a multifaceted original taste. They are often used in cooking to prepare a variety of dishes and desserts, or simply baked in the oven (the baked fruit smells like freshly baked bread, for which it received the name "breadfruit").

Also, a delicious and very healthy fresh juice is squeezed out of the papaya pulp - the drink is consumed in its natural form, mixed with other juices or used to make various cocktails. You can also find papaya juice on the shelves of modern supermarkets, but, as a rule, such a drink is not completely natural - it contains additional ingredients in the form of a variety of preservatives and flavor enhancers. Therefore, freshly squeezed fresh is considered the most useful. You can cook it yourself at home.

Composition and calories

Despite the sweet taste, papaya is an easily digestible and fairly low-calorie fruit - 100 grams of the product contains only 57 kcal [1] . In addition, it has very little protein and fat (0.17% and 0.15%), few carbohydrates (14.9%). Papaya juice can be safely recommended to people who watch their weight and figure. In addition, it is very beneficial for health - the composition of the drink includes many vitamins necessary for the full development of the body. Here are just a few of them:

• Vitamin B3, or niacin (0.15 mg). Nicotinic acid lowers blood cholesterol levels, helps reduce inflammation and pain in arthritis, improves brain function, and is effective in the treatment of dermatosis [2] and glaucoma [3] .

• Vitamin C (3 mg). Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble antioxidant that maintains good health and prolongs youth, protects the skin from photoaging, participates in the synthesis of natural collagen by the body [ 4] , is effective in the prevention of gout [5] , reduces total cholesterol in the blood serum [6] , prevents the development of heart - vascular diseases.

• Vitamin E (0.24 mg). It is a powerful antioxidant - it has anti-inflammatory properties [7] , protects cells from oxidation [8] and aging, brightens and rejuvenates the skin. It improves the menstrual cycle and alleviates the unpleasant symptoms of menopause, reduces the risk of miscarriage [9] , prevents the formation of thrombosis, improves night vision.

Also, papaya juice contains various trace elements: potassium (31 mg) - relaxes blood vessels, which helps to lower blood pressure [10] ; calcium (10 mg) - strengthens bone tissue, helps in the fight against osteoporosis [11] ; sodium (5 mg) - stabilizes the water balance in tissues, normalizes the functioning of nerve endings and muscle contraction [12] ; magnesium (3 mg) - regulates blood sugar levels, is used to prevent type 2 diabetes [13] , pr.

In addition, the fruit is a source of a unique proteolytic plant enzyme, papain. Please note that most of it is found in green unripe fruits. [14] The polypeptide helps break down proteins and improves the digestion process [15] , promotes the regeneration of gastrointestinal tissues, accelerates the healing of existing wounds [16] and inflammation. Papaya contains significant amounts of lutein, alpha- and beta-carotene (contribute to eye health, improve night vision [17] , prevent the development of cataracts). Studies show that the most beneficial form of carotenoids is found in freshly squeezed fruit juice. [18]

Top 7 Health Benefits of Papaya Juice

1. Helps in the Prevention and Treatment of Fatty Liver Disease

NAFLD, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which manifests itself in the form of pathological changes in the organ due to the deposition of fat droplets in its cells, can eventually progress to fibrosis, and then cirrhosis. Papaya will help prevent the development of a life-threatening disease. As a result of the experiment, in a group of experimental subjects who consumed papaya juice daily for 12

weeks, the amount of lipids in the liver decreased significantly, and inflammatory processes decreased.

[19]

2. Effective in the fight against excess weight

Studies show that the fruit has a high potential in reducing the risk of obesity. [20] Drink a few glasses of fresh papaya daily to see amazing mirror image changes in the near future and experience first hand the unique fat-burning properties of a delicious drink.

3. Has anti-cancer activity

The pulp of the fruit contains phenolic compounds, in particular, caffeic, quinic and chlorogenic acids, which show high activity in the fight against oncology. [21, 22, 23] Protect yourself and loved ones from the risk of getting acquainted with a dangerous disease by introducing healthy papaya juice into your diet!

4. Protects Against Cardiovascular Disease

The nutrients that make up the fruit have antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties - they help lower cholesterol levels, normalize the amount of sugar in the blood, and have a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system and the condition of patients with diabetes. [24]

5. Boosts Immunity, Helps Treat COVID-19

Papaya has immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties - the introduction of the fruit into the treatment protocol for patients suffering from post-COVID syndrome shows excellent results. [25] Supplement your daily diet with a few glasses of delicious and extremely healthy papaya juice to improve your well-being and protect your body from the effects of viruses and infections!

6. Has an anti-inflammatory effect

Enzymes and antioxidants contained in the pulp of the fruit prevent cell damage and reduce inflammation caused by oxidative stress - help prevent the development of diseases such as arthritis, neurodegenerative disorders (particularly Alzheimer's disease), etc. [26 ]

7. Improves digestion

Papaya contains a large number of enzymes that improve and facilitate the process of digestion. [27] Clinical studies have shown that eating the fruit has a beneficial effect on the condition of patients suffering from heartburn, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. [28]

No less useful is the juice extracted from papaya leaves. The liquid contains a huge amount of active components (alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids), which have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antitumor activity. Papaya leaf tincture promotes the production of platelets by the body [29] and is widely used in the treatment of such a dangerous infectious disease as dengue fever. [thirty]

Contraindications and possible harm of papaya juice

The juice of unripe fruits can cause spasmodic contractions of the uterus, which is unsafe during pregnancy. [31] Therefore, expectant mothers are advised to refrain from drinking this delicious drink while they are expecting a baby.

Also, in people suffering from atopy, papaya can cause food and respiratory allergies. [32] Therefore, if you have not previously been familiar with this exotic fruit, it is worth introducing it into the diet (including juice squeezed from the pulp of papaya) with caution.

Norms and recommendations for the use of papaya juice

Papaya juice can be consumed in its pure form, diluted with other fresh juices or added to cocktails. To obtain all the necessary trace elements contained in the fruit, it is enough for an adult to drink about 200 ml of a pure drink per day, for children, half the adult norm is enough - about 100 ml.

How to prepare and store papaya juice

To make juice, papaya fruits are cut in half, peeled with a spoon from seeds, cut off the skin and cut into pieces, which are then squeezed on a juicer or interrupted with a blender.

Note! Papaya seeds have high anthelmintic activity. [33] To obtain a medicinal drink, recommended to periodically use as a prophylaxis of helminthiasis for both children and adults, it is not necessary to extract the seeds before processing the fruit.

The most useful is freshly squeezed juice, which has not had time to oxidize from contact with oxygen. If it was not possible to drink the whole drink at once, in order to avoid the development of pathogenic organisms in it, it is recommended to store it in the refrigerator (up to 3 days) or freeze it by pouring it into zip bags and sending it to the freezer.
