OPENING NEW HORIZONS WITH PSYCHODRAMA AND MUSIC THERAPY

The University of Haifa in Israel has recently announced that the internationalization of the University is at high priority in its strategic plan. This includes a growing variety of Study Abroad Programs and Graduate Programs taught in English.

Situated at the top of the Carmel Mountain, amidst the Carmel National Forest, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Galilee, the University of Haifa provides the perfect setting for international graduate studies. The University of Haifa is one of Israel’s leading research universities, the largest in the north. It is a microcosm of Israeli society dedicated to academic excellence and social responsibility. An exciting and inspiring cultural mosaic, the university has a diverse population of 18,000 students from all walks of Israeli life and a growing number of students from around the world.

The University of Haifa is a fully accredited university under the auspices of Israel’s Ministry of Education and the Israeli Council for Higher Education. It is recognized internationally as an approved site for study abroad and academic credits earned at the University of Haifa are usually accredited worldwide.

The Graduate School of Creative Arts Therapies, which is part of the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Sciences, was established in October 2008. The School currently offers a master’s degree in Creative Arts Therapies with specializations in Psychodrama, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Dance/Movement Therapy (the language of instruction in these programs is Hebrew). In October 2012, the Graduate School of Creative Arts Therapies launched, in collaboration with the University’s International School, a full-time, one-year international master’s degree in Art Therapy designed to prepare professionals to practice in this field of therapy. This program, taught in English, takes place in Haifa over three consecutive semesters, from October until September.

Low-Residency M.A.

The School aspires to initiate an international Low-Residency M.A. degree in Creative Arts Therapies with a specialization in Psychodrama or a specialization in Music Therapy. The programs are suitable for applicants with an accredited bachelor’s degree who meet the above-mentioned admission requirements. For applicants who are already active in the field of mental health, psychodrama or music therapy provide yet another set of assessment and intervention skills that a mental health practitioner can utilize in his/her practice.

These programs will consist of two 4-week on-campus intensive summer residencies at the University of Haifa while between these residencies, during the fall and spring semesters, students will complete online courses, interacting with peers and faculty via the University’s online environment (all academic classes will be taught in English). During fall and spring semesters, students also will complete hours of clinical field experience in their

home communities under the face-to-face supervision of a qualified and approved mental health professional. The program will encompasses 90 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) including core courses, specialization courses, seminars, clinical supervision, and 600 hours of clinical field training. Upon successful completion of all academic requirements and a final exam, students will be awarded a fully accredited Master of Arts in Creative Arts Therapies with a specialization in Psychodrama or Music Therapy.

Program Prerequisites

Candidates for the master’s degree must complete the following academic prerequisites: Introduction to Psychology (2 credits), Physio-psychology (2 credits), Personality Theories (2 credits), Developmental Psychology (4 credits), Psychopathology (4 credits), Research Methods (2 credits), Statistics (2 credits) - total of 18 credits. In addition, candidates must provide documented proof of drama or music prerequisites: 300 hours of official training in drama or music and 200 hours of actual experience (total of 500 hours, according to specialization). Employability

Creative arts therapists have dynamic careers and professional experiences. They work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, educational institutions, community mental health facilities, prisons, hospices, day-care centers, and private practices.

Summit Presentation in Belgorod

On 22 - 26 of September 2013, four faculty members from the Graduate School of Creative Arts Therapies provided a Summit Presentation of the creative arts therapies filed at the Belgorod State Institute of Arts and Culture, Russia.
