народная обстановка, напряжение внутренних сил России в период внешних вызовов начала ХХ в. Сам революционный процесс Голдин предлагает начинать с 1902 г. Автор указывает на существование нескольких точек зрения на дату начала гражданской войны: февраль, август, октябрь 1917 г., январь, май 1918 г. Первые даты - «инкубационные», а вторые Голдин характеризует как начало «малой гражданской войны», связывая начало «фронтового» периода с весенними событиями 1918 г.
Г.З. Иоффе также указывает на связь событий 1917 г. и революции 19051907 гг. В отношении событий 1917 г. автор более близок к прежней концепции двух революций 1917 г. Он пишет о множественности революций, в дальнейшем указывая на «ленинскую» и «сталинскую» революции. Относительно начала гражданской войны точка зрения Г.З. Иоффе традиционна, он считает, что Октябрьский переворот в Петрограде положил начало гражданской войне. Удержание власти большевиками автор связывает с фактором гражданской войны. Сам ХХ век, согласно Г.З. Иоффе, - это круг революций, замкнувшийся в 1991 г. Этот материал в заключительной части сборника дополняют воспоминания Г.З. Виденье отправной точки революционных процессов контрастно отличается в статье В.В. Шелохаева4. Он указывает на «необычайную легкость» некоторых исследователей, утверждающих, что начало русской революции приходится на 1902 г. События 1902 г. (крестьянские волнения) и 1904 г. (банкетная кампания) - лишь возможные предпосылки Первой российской революции, а не ее начало: «Критическая масса этих противоречий «сдетонировала» лишь 9 января 1905 года»5. Автор считает дискуссионной и дату завершения революции в России в 1922 г. По мнению В.В. Шелохаева, события 1905-1922 гг. нельзя считать единым процессом. Точка разрыва, согласно автору, произошла в октябре 1917 г., когда внутрироссийское развитие было противопоставлено идее мировой революции.
С этим тезисом согласен М. Стейнберг, трактуя революцию как определенный эксперимент6. Автор констатирует: «Русская революция для миллионов людей была таким прыжком в свободное небо исторических возможностей,

утопическим импульсом к тому, чтобы «выйти за пределы» границ и ограничений прошлого мира, за пределы «тьмы» настоящего, в эпоху свободы»7.
Образ последовавшей за революцией 1917 г. гражданской войны положен в

основу статьи Б.И. Колоницкого . Публикация посвящена влиянию политической культуры дореволюционной России на конфликты эпохи революции и гражданской войны. Согласно Колоницкому, «культуры конфликтов, сложившиеся в дореволюционной и революционной России, создавали определенную рамку, в которой должны были действовать основные участники политического процесса»9. Среди таких моментов он указывает на милитаризацию России, что проявлялось в использовании армии в внутригражданских конфликтах. Другой предпосылкой была система поиска могущественного и коварного «внутреннего врага». Важным моментом было и то, что общественные дореволюционные структуры в это время оттеснялись на второй план, уступая место опять-таки милитаризованным структурам.
Интерес представляет статья У. Розенберга10. Согласно автору, причина насилия крылась не только во влиянии Первой мировой войны и децентрализаци-онных процессов. Важным фактором была «мучительная нехватка» материальных ресурсов, борьба за них в России. Второй фактор представлял «собой чувство глубокого унижения, которое появилось как результат многих потерь»11. Отсюда и третий фактор - «функциональность» - фактическая невозможность в этот период заставить что-либо работать, тем более работать хорошо. Статья также посвящена проявлению самого насилия, однако новейшие российские работы по этой теме в ней не представлены12.

ему, вся эпоха Второй русской революции - «это череда следовавших друг за другом или накладывавшихся одна на другую локальных войн в разных частях Империи»15. Это определялось социально-классовым, этнонациональным, а также другими факторами. В качестве примеров в первом случае Чураков приводит Ижевское и Тамбовское восстания, Кронштадтский мятеж, крестьянские восстания против Колчака и т.д. Этнонациональный фактор - это не только Поволжье, Урал и Украина, но и Финляндия. Согласимся с автором: финские события оказали непосредственное влияние на ход гражданской войны, были одной из ее предтеч.
Статья В.В. Калашникова16 посвящена изложению подхода американской историографии середины 1960-х гг. к проблеме предпосылок и причин Русской революции. Одним из ключевых моментов в ней был вопрос оценки направленности социально-политического развития предвоенной России.

К.А. Соловьев в своей статье проанализировал конфликт власти и общества в условиях Первой Мировой войны. Именно война, по мнению автора статьи, была ключевым фактором углубления и ускорения внутриполитического кризиса в России, который открыл дорогу Февралю.
Статья А.Б. Николаева излагает его концепцию в отношении роли Госдумы
в февральских событиях, которая представляется ключевым органом в развитии

революции на ее начальном этапе . А.Б. Николаев - один из крупнейших отечественных исследователей российского революционного процесса 1917 г. и истории Государственной думы в частности19 - считает, что данный орган власти стал основой не системы «двоевластия», а третьемартовской (трехчастной: Госдума - Петросовет - Временное правительство) политической системы. Проблему роли морских частей поднимает К.Б. Назаренко . С его точки зрения, матросы - скорее социальная группа, чем политическая. Наибольшая ее революционная активность приходится на 1917-1918 гг. Также в статье охарактеризованы судьбы морского офицерства и дана периодизация степени участия «морского элемента» в событиях 1917-1921 гг.
Крайняя альтернатива большевикам в революции и гражданской войне представлена в статье Д.И. Стогова, который изложил свое видение судьбы правых движений в послереволюционный период25. Ряд положений автора могут быть уточнены. Очень спорен авторский тезис о белых, которым якобы по преимуществу была свойственна либеральная идеология.
В статье А.Ю. Давыдова26 рассмотрен ключевой аспект экономической жизни России в период гражданской войны: организация продовольственного снабжения. Статья также интересна сравнением потоков мешочников в период гражданской войны со схожими явлениями после Второй мировой войны, а также во время перестройки.
Целый ряд статей посвящены истории различных российских регионов в период гражданской войны. В.Ф. Солдатенко рассмотрел военно-политические

The collection opens with the article by V. Goldin1 that examines the origins of the Russian revolutionary process. According to the author, Russian modernization is one of the reasons that intensified the split in the society. The other reason is the international situation, the tension of Russia's internal forces during the period of external challenges at the beginning of the twentieth century. Goldin suggests that 1902 should be considered as the start of the revolutionary process. The author points out the existence of several points of view on the date when the Civil War began: February, August, October of 1917; January, May of 1918. The former dates are "incub a-tory" while the author describes the latter dates as the beginning of the "smaller civil war" and links the beginning of the "front" period with the spring events of 1918.
G. Ioffe also points out the connection between the events of 1917 and the revolution of 1905-07. Regarding the events of 1917, the author is closer to the previous concept of the two revolutions of 1917. He writes about the multiplicity of revolutions, pointing further to the "Lenin revolution" and the "Stalin revolution." As far as the beginning of the Civil War is concerned, the point of view of G. Ioffe is traditional: he believes that the October coup in Petrograd initiated the Civil War. The author connects the retention of power by the Bolsheviks with the factor of the civil war. The twentieth century itself, according to G. Ioffe, is the circle of revolutions that closed in 1991. This material is supplemented with G. Ioffe's reminiscences about Moscow researchers of the Revolution and the Civil War in the final part of the

The view on the starting point of revolutionary processes is contrastingly different in the article by V. Shelokhaev.4 He points to the "extraordinary lightness" of some scholars who claim that the beginning of the Russian Revolution occurred in 1902. The events of 1902 (peasant unrest) and of 1904 (the banquet campaign) are just possible premises for the First Russian Revolution but not its beginning: "The

critical mass of these contradictions 'detonated' only on January 9, 1905."5 The author also believes the date of completion of the revolution in Russia in 1922 to be debatable. According to V. Shelokhaev, the events of 1905-22 cannot be considered as a single process. The break point, according to the author, occurred in October 1917, when the internal Russian development was opposed to the idea of the world revolution.
M. Steinberg agrees with this thesis and interprets the revolution as a certain experiment.6 The author states: "For the millions of people, the Russian Revolution was such a leap into the free sky of historic opportunities, a utopian impulse to 'go b e-yond' the borders and limitations of the past world, beyond the 'darkness' of the present, to the era of freedom."7
The image of the Civil War following the 1917 Revolution laid the foundation for

the article by B. Kolonitskii. The publication is devoted to the influence of the political culture of pre-revolutionary Russia on the conflicts of the age of the Revolution and the Civil War. According to Kolonitskii, "the cultures of conflicts that developed in pre-revolutionary and revolutionary Russia created a certain framework within which the main participants in the political process should act."9 Among such moments, he points out the militarization of Russia, which became apparent in the use of the army in intra-civil conflicts. Another prerequisite was the system of searching for the powerful and insidious "internal enemy." An important point was that the public pre-revolutionary structures at that time were pushed into the background and gave way to the militarized structures.
Of interest is the article by U. Rosenberg.10 According to the author, the reason for the violence lay not only in the influence of the World War I and decentralization processes. The "painful shortage" of material resources and the struggle for them in Russia also constituted an important factor. The second factor was "a deep feeling of humiliation that arose as a result of many losses."11 Hence the third factor, "functionality," or the actual inability to make anything work during that period, and work well

all the more. The article is also devoted to the manifestations of violence, but the latest Russian works on this topic are not considered in it.

The article by D. Churakov, who paid attention to the problems of social violence in his research,14 continues the theme of the collection. According to him, the entire era of the Second Russian Revolution "is a series of successive or overlapping local wars in different parts of the Empire."15 This was determined by social class, ethno-national, and other factors. As examples of the former, Churakov cites the Izhevsk and Tambov revolts, the Kronstadt Rebellion, the peasant revolts against Kol-chak, and so on. The ethno-national factor concerns not only the Volga Region, the Urals, and Ukraine, but also Finland. Let us agree with the author that the Finnish events directly influenced the course of the Civil War and were among its forerunners.
The article by V. Kalashnikov16 presents the approach of the mid-1960s American historiography to the problem of the prerequisites and causes of the Russian Revolution. One of its key points was the issue of assessing the direction of sociopolitical development in pre-war Russia.

In his article, K. Solov'ev has analysed the conflict of power and society under the conditions of the World War I. According to the author of the article, it was the war that was the key factor in deepening and accelerating the internal political crisis in Russia, which opened the road to the February Revolution.

Uzlova,21 who analysed a similar storyline earlier,22 reveals the essence of the historians' dispute about the role of the State Duma in the events mentioned above, about the problem of correlation between spontaneity and consciousness in the history of the February Revolution. The article gives a comprehensive analysis of the conceptually close works by V. Kalashnikov and A. Nikolaev.
The February period is supplemented with an analysis of the pre-October events in the article by A. Rabinovich, who briefly describes the strategy and tactics of the Bolshevik race for power in 1917.
