INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF TEACHING RUSSIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO UNIVERSITY ENTRANTS FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES

AT THE PREPARATORY FACULTY

The integration of the Russian Federation into the world educational space has marked the transition of all higher education institutions of the country to the multi-level system of higher education (in accordance with the provisions of Bologna process), and has also provided opportunities to promote the Russian education in the international arena. Stepping up in exports of educational services by increasing the share of foreign students is "an effective strategy for the development of the education system in the country" [15, c. 193], and also plays an important role in the formation of an attractive image of our state.

The number of foreign students wishing to get higher education in Russia is increasing every year. The most intensive flow of entrants is observed from the Asian countries and, of course, from the CIS. Many Russian universities focus on the admission of foreign students entering both on the budgetary basis, through quotas provided by the Russian Federation, and on the fee basis.

The process of teaching foreigners begins with the pre-university stage, the goals of which are to form the students' communicative competencies in an amount sufficient to carry out educational and cognitive activities using the Russian language, to lay the foundations for the qualitative training of a future foreign specialist. After 8-10 months, a foreign student has not only to master certain knowledge, skills and abilities that will allow him to pass the exam in Russian as a foreign language for the First Certification Level, but also to be psychologically prepared for learning activities in new socio-cultural environment.

In this regard, entrants from the CIS deserve special attention. As a rule, they come to study to Russia already speaking Russian in a varying degree, which also contributes to their faster adaptation process. After all, it is no secret that a foreign speaker, immersed in the language environment, has to cope with a whole range of adaptation problems. However, the CIS students' knowledge is often not enough to immediately become the first-year students of the Russian universities, and they have to undergo a pre-university training stage. Researchers note that, compared with the situation in the Soviet period, the quality of proficiency in the Russian language in the CIS has noticeably decreased over the past quarter of the century. This is conditioned by several reasons: firstly, by the lack of teachers and teaching aids; secondly, by the reconsideration of attitude towards the Russian language. Even those CIS countries that assigned the status of the "language of international communication" to the Russian language in the 1990s, at present have either excluded the relevant provisions from regulatory acts or implement programs to protect their own state language [11].

According to L. S. Kremenetskaya, the contingent of students from the CIS can be divided into several groups. The first group includes children from "mixed marriages" where one of the parents is Russian. Thus, the Russian language is a native or second native language for them. In turn, in this group, it is possible to identify students who have known Russian since childhood and studied it at school, and those who, for certain reasons, did not study Russian at school or studied it as a foreign language. The second group consists of students for whom Russian is a foreign language: they can communicate verbally more or less successfully, but, as a rule, they have difficulty in expressing thoughts in writing. In other words, such students have poorly developed or no written language skills [6].

We should note that for students from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan who studied at the preparatory department of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation in 2016-2017, the Russian language was not native, but they studied it at school. This condition required adjustment to the content and organization of the training program.

To optimize the educational process of such students, it is desirable to form a separate group, which has been done at our university. This will save time, as there are opportunities to use teaching methods in classes aimed specifically at this contingent of students, as well as pay attention to "weak points" in grammar. Thus, in the Tajik and Uzbek languages, there is no gender category. In this regard, it is necessary to work out carefully the agreement

in gender, case and number of the attribute and the main noun. A number of difficulties arise in the study of verb types. If in the Uzbek language there is no category of aspect, in the Tajik language "there are certain typological similarities" with this category in Russian [4, c. 104]. It is sometimes difficult for students from Uzbekistan to distinguish an adverb from an adjective, since there are no special morphological indicators of these parts of speech in the Uzbek language. For this reason, it is necessary to form the skills of how to form adverbs and distinguish them and adjectives in phrases and sentences.

When actualizing and consolidating some grammatical material (for example, the formation of participles, imperatives), one can use songs that not only make the course of the lesson lively, but also have a number of methodological advantages: they contribute to stronger absorption and expansion of the vocabulary; serve as an incentive for discussion or writing an essay; help to join the culture of the country of the language being studied [9; 13].

For practicing grammar, one can introduce tasks of searching for a grammatical phenomenon (for example, the prepositional case) in the suggested text and explaining its function. As our experience has shown, the task of finding grammatical errors in the text is interesting for students despite the fact that there are not so many supporters of such tasks. Students are asked to play the role of a "teacher" and find the specified number of errors in the text. For example:

Task 1. Read the text. If there is an error in the line, correct it. If everything is correct, put "+" (8 errors)

The tasks to restore the text are no less interesting for students. In other words, a text is suggested, into which it is necessary to fill in the words suitable in meaning. Thus, not only knowledge of vocabulary is checked, but grammar as well. Let's consider an example:

Task 2. Fill in the gaps in the text (1 gap - 1 word)

For such tasks, we suggest choosing materials that contain educational information for students. For example, after reading the texts presented above, our listeners became interested in the places described and expressed a desire to visit them.

In the process of working with students from the CIS, one can conduct "lexical briefings": listeners are presented with a picture (for example, a photo of the famous "Eliseevsky" store), and they have to suggest as many adjectives as possible. After 5 minutes, students voice their choices, which are written on the blackboard by the teacher. Then antonyms and synonyms are suggested for the recorded words. In carrying out such a task, the "Word Map" Internet project (https://kartaslov.ru/) can be useful. Then one can invite students to make a sentence or a short story out of the resulting phrases.

The enrichment of students' vocabulary also occurs while introducing lexical-semantic groups of verbs. In this regard, it is worth remembering the invaluable, in our opinion, series of books "When Dictionaries Do Not Help..." [3]. At the same time, one can invent his own plot texts in order to promote the development of skills for the adequate use of words in speech that are a part of a particular lexico-semantic group. Here are some examples:

Task 3. Fill in appropriate words in the blanks. Use the words for reference

- Сашка, привет! - услышала она бодрый голос Артёма. - Не могу долго говорить. В общем, начинай собирать чемоданы, завтра вечером уезжаем.

Слова для справок: тянуть(ся), дотянуться, протянуть, затянуться, вытянуть, оттягивать.

As our experience has shown, entrants themselves tried to invent such small stories willingly using words from the same lexico-semantic group.

Today it is difficult to imagine teaching foreign languages, including Russian as a foreign language, without computer multimedia technologies. By combining the functions of technical and audiovisual teaching aids, they help to intensify the educational process and, of course, to implement common didactic principles. However, the use of Internet resources in the conditions of a preparatory department, of course, should be thought out and structured. For example, on the websites of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center, the newspaper "Arguments and Facts", the "RIA Novosti" news agency, one can find a rich collection of infographics of different nature. Obviously, the clear organization of infographics, the visualization of details, the minimum amount of vocabulary and the attractiveness of presentation as a whole allow students to memorize complex information faster than they do when reading an ordinary text. It should be recognized that infographics has several advantages. Firstly, it can be selected for foreigners who speak Russian, both at the basic level and the advanced one. Secondly, infographics provides opportunities not only for teachers in terms of preparing assignments for classes, but also for students in terms of realizing their creative abilities, developing critical and analytical thinking. In other words, students can extract information independently, interpret it, based on the components presented in infographics. Finally, infographics often contains a linguistic-cultural component, since it is created for the Russians and is devoted to those issues that interest and excite them, which increases the value of such material for foreign students [2; 12].

One of the effective ways to enhance speech activity is the use of video materials. Of course, both the method of selecting the video material included in the lesson and the technique of its methodological work-out should be taken into account. One cannot but agree with the opinion that when using video films, "life itself comes to class -students see the real communicative process learning not only linguistic, but also culturological features of communication in Russian" [5]. When working with students from the CIS, we used, in particular, short films [14], as well as video inserts (i.e. fragments of feature films, animated films) corresponding to the subject of the lesson.

There is no doubt that reading literature, which expands the cultural worldview of students from the CIS, plays an important role in language acquisition. We agree that "reading aloud of unadapted texts contributes to the penetration into the melody of the Russian prose and poetry... allows... considering various ways of description and narration enriching students' vocabulary" [7, c. 110]. In classes, we read texts and perform assignments from various textbooks, in particular "Not Lost Stories" [1], and also use our own methodological aids based on the works by V. S. Tokareva, Z. Prilepin, L. Rait, etc. It should be noted that in preparing these materials, we relied on the rich

practical experience summarized in the work by N. V. Kulibina "Why, What and How to Read in Class: A Manual for Teachers of Russian as a Foreign Language" [8]. Considerable attention, of course, should be paid to the formation of skills of giving a written argument based on the read text and writing essays on the suggested topics.

As it has been noted, students from the CIS often have a sufficient amount of grammatical knowledge and certain vocabulary. However, they have difficulty producing monologic utterances, they do not know the structure of creating texts of the scientific style. At our preparatory department, entrants from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan learn to work with "Economics" texts: analyze topics and ideas, compositional and linguistic features, identify inter-contextual links, draw up plans, formulate abstracts, make generalizations, then reproduce texts in a written form or orally. The students demonstrate the ability to create monologic utterances that are logical, consistent and correct in the process of discussion. For example, one can suggest the following topics: "Cash vs Bank Card", "Private Bank vs Bank with State Support", etc. Of course, preliminary work with texts, necessary terminology, vocabulary, grammatical and syntactic structures is done in advance. It should be noted that the suggested texts provoke great interest in students, encourage them to communicate actively in the field of specialty. The text material is not only informative for future students of financial and economic universities, but is also a source of relevant and useful information for them.

Let's sum up. The level of entrants' training at the preparatory department today has high requirements. This is primarily conditioned by the fact that students have to carry out educational activity in the Russian language. Students from the CIS, as a rule, speak Russian, but their level is often not enough to become the first-year students immediately. In this regard, at the stage of pre-university training, attention should be paid to the most difficult grammatical topics for this group of students, and they should be taught to work with fiction texts, texts of scientific style, to participate in discussions. Among the ways to improve the efficiency of foreign students' training, the use of modern information technology takes the first place. A skillful combination of the traditional and modern will help to achieve significant positive results.
