It is vital that, for humans attempt to learn foreign languages such as English due to the requirements of society ,as receptive and productive skills pronunciation is essential for new learners . During language learning period, learners may have difficulty in how to spell sounds or feel challenging to pronounce every word correctly as a native speakers. As well as ,especially in beginner level, educators have to consign to teach pronunciation and they utilize various methods to reach fast, effectively and interestingly.Therefore, this paper purposes to explore how to improve learners’ pronunciation in English classes by introducing some methods and techniques.

ENHANCING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION IN ESL AND EFL CLASSES

ABSTRACT

It is vital that, for humans attempt to learn foreign languages such as English due to the requirements of society ,as receptive and productive skills pronunciation is essential for new learners . During language learning period, learners may have difficulty in how to spell sounds or feel challenging to pronounce every word correctly as a native speakers. As well as ,especially in beginner level, educators have to consign to teach pronunciation and they utilize various methods to reach fast, effectively and interestingly.Therefore, this paper purposes to explore how to improve learners' pronunciation in English classes by introducing some methods and techniques.

The English language is the most studied language in the world. According to the British Council, an estimated 1.5 billion people across the globe are currently learning English. There is a universal desire and need for people to learn the English language. This has opened a robust job market for traveling teachers. The number of English speakers continues to increase as learning English provides people with opportunities for clear communication, better employment and improved lives. As today's dominant business language, English has almost become a necessity for people entering a global workforce. Thus, the importance and necessity of learning English has given rise to a tremendous need for English teachers in other countries.

According to Ur (1996) there are some aspects of vocabulary that should be taught or mastered by students in learning foreign language, and one of them is forming pronunciation and spelling .The learner has to know what a word sounds like (its pronunciation) and what it looks like (its spelling). These are fairly obvious characteristics and the other will be presented by the item for learner when encountering the item for the first time. In teaching, teachers need to make sure that other these aspects are accurately presented and learned.

Furthermore, there are different researchers and scholars who has observed how to correct pronunciation and they have recommended some techniques and special technologies to improve i : 1. Ellis

Ellis (www.planetellis.com) is one of the leading English language learning software programs in the market, released in 1992. Ellis Kids is its specialized children's

package. It teaches vocabulary, listening, grammar, and communication skills through multimedia inputs such as video, audio, and text. Learning is tested through multiple-choice questions; the students are also able to test their pronunciation by recording a few words of their speech and comparing it with a standard English spoken voice. Ellis is not equipped with any text-to-speech capability and is not capable of providing the user with any feedback on the quality of the learner's pronunciation. Indeed, there is no software at this time that can do so. However, the focus of Ellis is the whole of language learning, of which pronunciation is a small part.

2. Concentrating Games .

This is a kind of card game. Each set may consist of fourteen to twenty four cards. Half of the cards have the new English words being learned, the other half have the pictures of the equivalent Indonesian words. Procedure: lay the cards face down in columns and rows. Taking turns, the students turn over two cards. If they do not match, they turn them back over. When a match is made; the students remove the cards and take another turn. The students pronounce the words every time they turn over the cards. They say a sentence every time they make a match. The students with the most pairs win.

3. Puzzle Dadu/Dice.

This interesting as well as instructional game can certainly attract your new learners in beginner level.teachers can utilize it as a warm- up or consolidation activity in the classroom. One student arranges of a word and sticks on alphabets and pronounces the word and gives the meaning then makes a sentence. Whoever makes the fastest and the most words or sentences is the winner.This game also appropriate for revising new words easily with correct pronunciation and especially it can serve to develop friendship and decision -making abilities of learners.

Based on the conclusions and implications that have been explained above, some recommendation will be divided into the English teacher. Namely ,it is essential for the teacher to improve the quality of English teaching and learning process. They should be more creative in producing and using interesting media like games. In addition, she should often give English instructions, implement various interesting activities like games and pay attention to all of the students. In doing so, the students will be able to engage themselves in interesting teaching and learning process. As the result, it will improve their English pronunciation ability as one of the important aspect of learning English.
