ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES Annotation
English for Academic Purposes (EAP), commonly known as Academic English, entails training students, usually in a higher education setting, to use language appropriate for study. It is one of the most common forms of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is more than just a manner of speaking and writing. It is a skill. It helps develop our critical thinking faculties, and guides us on how to judge, criticise, evaluate, and corroborate information.

Английский для академических целей (EAP), широко известный как академический английский, предполагает обучение студентов, обычно в высших учебных заведениях, использованию языка, подходящего для обучения. Это одна из наиболее распространенных форм английского языка для специальных целей (ESP). Английский для академических целей (EAP) - это больше, чем просто манера говорить и писать. Это навык. Это помогает развивать наши способности критического мышления и учит нас, как судить, критиковать, оценивать и подтверждать информацию.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP), commonly known as Academic English, entails training students, usually in a higher education setting, to use language appropriate for study. It is one of the most common forms of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is more than just a manner of speaking and writing. It is a skill. It helps develop our critical thinking faculties, and guides us on how to judge, criticise, evaluate, and corroborate information. EAP teaches us how to acknowledge the ideas and works of others. EAP classes can include areas such as academic reading skills, listening and taking notes, writing summaries, justifying opinions, interpreting graphical information and writing essays. Learners may need specific preparation for an external test they will take to prove their ability to study in English, such as IELTS. EAPs are designed to provide support for employees who are experiencing life issues that may impact their psycho-social functioning and productivity in the workplace, which may result in absenteeism, presenteeism amongst other workplace issues.
There is some debate amongst EAP teachers as to the best way to help students with academic English. On the one hand, students might be taught particular conventions but not expected to understand why they
need to adapt their writing; a pragmatic approach. On the other hand, students might be encouraged to challenge writing conventions and only adopt them if they seem justified; a critical approach. Recently attempts have been made to try and reconcile these opposing views. A critical pragmatic approach to EAP encourages students to develop writing conventions required by colleges and universities while also encouraging them to think about the reasons why these conventions exist. EAPs can be in-house or outsourced. An employee assistance program (EAP) is a benefit program that assists employees with personal or work-related problems that may impact their job performance, health and general well-being. EAPs usually offer free and confidential assessments, short-term counseling, referrals and follow-up services for employees. The primary objective of the Employee Assistance Program is, according to the EAPA, "to improve the quality of working life". This obliges both company managers and individual employees to ask themselves what the quality of working life is, what aspects can affect it, and how it can be improved. An EAP program focuses instruction on skills required to perform in an English-speaking academic context across core subject areas generally encountered in a college or a university setting. Programs may also include a more narrow focus on the more specific linguistic demands of a particular area of study, for example business subjects. Programs may be divided into pre-sessional courses and courses taken alongside students' other subjects. In the former case, sometimes EAP courses may be intended to raise students' general English levels so that they can enter a college or a university.
English for Academic Purposes is a language style that is used when writing various academic works. Unfortunately, in schools and even universities very little attention is paid to the development of writing; the main emphasis is on vocabulary and grammar. But developing academic writing skills means improving language at all levels. Now you know the features of English for academic purposes and will be able to apply our recommendations in practice. Writing scientific papers, due to the need to follow a clear structure, select words, and use additional literature, is a powerful tool for the development of not only written but also oral speech. Practice shows that people who learn English as a foreign language and develop writing skills at the same time improve their speaking skills faster and better. The publication is intended to contribute to the development of language competence for academic purposes, which is one of the priority areas of language training of our time. The content of the manual is determined, on the one hand, by the practical needs of students related to the implementation of academic and professional tasks, on the other hand, by the requirements imposed by educational programs on the quality of language training.
