The article examines modifications of bimetal band saws of two leading foreign manufacturers and describes their characteristics and main properties. The article also reveals mathematical model of relationship between cutting power and teeth number which allows to design high-speed band saws for metal cutting.

Abstract: the article examines modifications of bimetal band saws of two leading foreign manufacturers and describes their characteristics and main properties. The article also reveals mathematical model of relationship between cutting power and teeth number which allows to design high-speed band saws for metal cutting. Bimetal band saws are designed for cutting different types of metal. Nowadays it is one of the most modern, effective and economic tools. The saws are resistant to impact forces and have low level of vibration and sawing noise. They also guarantee high accuracy and efficiency during cutting of various work pieces [1]. Bimetal saw web can be used in band saw machines of many kinds. These saws allow to get high quality of saw cut and improve the blank production process for aircraft and space engineering.

Japanese company "Amada" produce bimetal band saws with variable tooth pitch. Their cutting edge is made of high-speed steel. Among them such saw constructions as: Protector M42 -this saw has extra tough back face "Protector"; Super HLG and Magnum HLG71 - their tooth geometry and accuracy of saw setting provide reduced friction; Super HL and Sigma - they have variable saw cut width which contributes to reduction decrease of cutting resistance; Magnum HL71 - the saw has teeth made of ultra-strength material. The band thickness S is from 20 till 80 mm and their width B is from 0,9 till 1,6 mm [2].

Honsberg company (Germany) is one of the leading manufacturers of bimetal band saws with variable tooth pitch. This company produce such types of band saws as: Spectra - these saws have tenacious backing material with high bending fatigue strength; Secura - the saw with special tooth profile and saw setting for cutting heavy tee-beams and profiles; Delta and Master - they have positive cutting angle 9 which equals to 16° and 10° respectively; Radial and Aurum - have three-edged tooth pointing and special saw setting; Duratec - the saw with cutting edge made of steel M51 which increases service life. The sizes of pointed saws vary from 13x0,5 mm to 80x1,6 mm. Variable tooth number per unit length gives an opportunity to lower vibration while cutting bigger cross sections [3].

According to composition and grade of high-speed steel the bimetal saws of almost all manufacturers are divided into 2 groups - with high-speed cutting edge made of M42 or M51 [4].

As it stated in research paper [5], the band saw cutting power can be analyzed by function

where fCz - coefficient depending on tooth bite, specific cutting force and material; Vc -cutting speed; z - teeth number per inch. The mathematical model for high-speed saw cut was got during research on relationship between cutting power and teeth number.

Carrying out comparative analysis of Amada and Honsberg's bimetal band saws, we specify design factors of saws and develop mathematical model of relationship between cutting power and teeth number for high-speed metal cutting.
