Strip filters are frequency-selective devices, which are widely used in communication systems and radar systems. These filters are miniature and lightweight, so they are often used in on-Board radio equipment of spacecraft and aircraft. In addition, the devices have a number of advantages, such as the ease of fabrication, low cost, high vibration and thermal stability, good relation between the measured characteristics with those calculated in the one-dimensional models involving quasi-static approximation, which greatly facilitates and accelerates their design.

The simplest stripline filter is the stripline resonator, which is a section of strip transmission line.

Microstrip resonators are the most widely used devices in the modern microwave equipment. However, increasing demands to the electrical characteristics of frequency-selective devices make researchers and developers to seek opportunities to improve the quality factor of the resonators. One of such abilities is the use of stripline resonators on suspended substrate, which differs from the microstrip resonators by the fact that between the top and bottom surfaces of substrate there are air gaps. Stripline on a suspended substrate has several advantages in comparison with microstrip line. The presence of the air gap between the substrate and the ground reduces the effect of dispersion, usually to such an extent that the quasi-static results remain correct even at high frequencies. This line has a low attenuation, low effective dielectric constant, low loss, high Q.

Despite the fact that the history of the use of stripline filters in the frequency-selective device comprises more than ten years [1-3], a systematic study of their properties has not been conducted. When designing any device on the basis of the resonators it is needed to have as much information as possible about their properties, i.e. to know the range of eigen frequencies and values of the first resonances unloaded Q-factors, as well as their behavior depending on the design parameters. Therefore, the study of this problem is an actual task.

The aim of this work is to study the properties of stripline resonator on the suspended substrate depending on its design parameters using electromagnetic simulation.

Resonators computer simulation on the suspended substrate was carried out in the Microwave Office program by the AWR DESIGN ENVIRONMENT 2009 (AWRDE 2009) firm, intended for the design of microwave devices. For measuring frequency characteristics of the strip resonator on the suspended substrate the vector network analyzer of German company ROHDE&SCHWARZ was used. The study of resonator included weak coupling in the measuring path vector network analyzer, and its eigen frequency and unloaded quality factor were determined from the resonance curve.

To determine the ability of using computer simulation to study stripline resonator characteristics on suspended substrate Microwave Office was used and the resonator was fabricated with the following design parameters: substrate alumina (s = 9.0, tg S = 0.0001), the thickness of the substrate Hd = 0.45 mm, the substrate dimensions 24.5^5 mm2, the dimensions of the copper strip conductors 20.4^1 mm2, the height of the screen 4 mm. The table below lists the eigen frequencies and their unloaded quality factor of the manufactured resonator and its model (see Table).

Comparison of the properties of the suspended substrate stripline resonator obtained as a result of modeling with experimental ones

Eigen frequencies f0, MHz Unloaded quality factor

Model 4234 510

Experiment 4248 536

The resonance frequency of the model and experiment differs less than 1 %, unloaded quality factor of the manufactured resonator was 5 % higher than the simulated one. Such a small difference allows us to do proper research using computer simulation.

Design parameters of stripline resonators on suspended substrate were the thickness of the substrate Hd, the distance from the substrate to the lower and upper walls of the casing (screen height) Ha, the width of the strip conductor W, the distance from the side walls to the strip conductor S1, the distance from the end walls to the strip conductor S2. The properties of the resonators depending on the value of the dielectric constant of the substrate e were studied too.

In the framework of this work the research of the effect of designing parameters on the properties of stripline resonators on the suspended substrate, and an explanation of the observed dependencies were carried out. The obtained results are of great practical importance, since they can be used in designing microwave devices based on the suspended substrate resonators with higher performance.
