INTRODUCTION

Language is one of the essential things in communication. Language is a means of communication to communicate with one another. Everyone needs language to communicate. A human being can say or express his meaning to another human through language. One of the international languages is an English. English is a foreign language and an international language widely used in communication by people in most countries in the world, including Uzbekistan.

In general, educating English in schools allows students to communicate using English both orally and in writing. In line with this goal, teaching English in secondary schools supports the mastery and development of four skills: listening,

speaking, reading, and writing.one of the vital language skills in writing; can be seen in that writing helps students produce correct grammar and organize students' ideas.1

Writing is one of the essential skills which has to be mastered by the students at senior high school. Through writing, they can express their ideas, information, thoughts, experiences and feelings with written language regularly and thoroughly.

DISCUSSION AND RESULTS

There are a lot of techniques that can motivate and actively involve students in the English teaching-learning process especially writing. One of those techniques is the "Dictation". Dictation is also a useful activity for young learners. Dictation can give students a lot of experience dealing with writing. Dictation technique can be a good technique to improve students' writing skills using correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Dictation refers to the process of transcribing spoken text. One person, for example the teacher, will read out (dictate) a passage of text while another person, for example the pupil, will write down what is being said as accurately as possible.

The aim is for the pupil to fully understand and then re-convey the meaning of the passage they have heard with the correct grammar and spelling.

At first, the text is read slowly by the teacher, then repeated once or twice at a normal pace. This gives the pupil time to pay attention to what they're hearing and attempt recording it in writing without needing to rush too much. When the teacher has reached the end of the passages, they may read through them once again from start to finish at a normal pace. Pupils then have a chance to re-read their work, and make any corrections where necessary. Being such a simple and versatile practice, dictation is a really useful tool for developing language skills and can easily be tailored to the learning level of the pupil.

According to Chai (2011), dictation is an activity that helps students to increase their awareness of phonics, listening, and writing skills. Moreover, Jain (in (Mentari, 2018)) stated that dictation is a strategy that can develop students' habits in listening, and also can help students to understand punctuation and spelling, to understand word, phrase, sentence, and clause, and also enables students to increase their abilities in listening language, so they get used to the language.

Richards, Platt, and Weber (in (Fachrurrarzy, 1989)) stated that dictation is a technique that used in language teaching and language testing, in which a passage is read aloud to the students, with pauses during which the students must try to write

down what they heard as accurately as possible. The dictation as a model for learning English phonetics is also an important medium to learn grammar and vocabulary.

Furthermore, according to Taylor (in (Fachrurrarzy, 1989)) added that dictation has several meaning, including:

a) Dictation is reading passage aloud.

b) Dictation is dividing passage into phrases that suitable for committal to short-term memory and re-reading phrase with phrase with gaps long enough for subjects to record the preceding phrase in writing.

c) Dictation is optionally re-reading phrases as they being written.

d) Dictation is re-reading the whole passage as in one.

In addition, Hornby et al. (1995) stated that dictation means something being dictated to, or passage that is dictated. In short, it can be concluded that dictation is an activity where the students transcribe words, phrases, sentences, or passage that they listened to.

Dictations can play an important role in elementary grades as they can help students develop their language skills in several ways. Dictations involve the teacher reading a passage aloud and the students writing it down as accurately as possible. Here are some ways in which dictations can benefit elementary students:

1. Improving listening skills: Dictations require students to listen carefully to what the teacher is saying, which can help improve their listening skills.

2. Enhancing spelling and vocabulary: Dictations can help students learn new words and practice spelling them correctly. It also helps them identify and correct spelling errors they may have made.

3. Developing grammar and punctuation: Dictations can also help students develop their grammar and punctuation skills by exposing them to different sentence structures and punctuation marks.

4. Encouraging attention to detail: Dictations require students to pay close attention to details such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation, which can help them develop a keen eye for detail.

Overall, dictations can be a valuable tool for elementary teachers to help their students improve their language skills. However, it is important to ensure that the dictations are age-appropriate and not too difficult for the students to understand. It is also important to provide feedback and guidance to the students to help them learn from their mistakes and improve their skills.
