Art really affects our lives. We can sometimes misunderstand him, scold and criticize. We can admire it and feel happy about it. One thing is for sure - art plays a huge role in our lives. But how exactly?

Art awakens empathy

Empathy is one of those qualities (or even better, abilities) that not everyone has. And which are so difficult for us. We can all spend hours defending our position, talking about ourselves, and explaining why we did what we did. And sometimes it becomes difficult to truly understand and accept another person. Sometimes it is not easy to get into other people's problems, support your neighbor and be able to take his place.

The famous researcher of cognitive development Jean piaget talked about the fact that all children are by nature very selfish. We all grow up when we learn to see things from other people's point of view, learn to believe and understand that other people's feelings are just as important to them as ours are to us. This is the essence of empathy that art teaches us [1-30].

Reading the book, we literally get into the minds of the characters and sometimes in this way we can understand why people who seemed so different from us act in one way or another. Watching the film, we see everything through the eyes of the Director, we can notice what is beyond our attention in everyday life. When we look at a picture, we think about how and why it was created. We try to understand its meaning, what the people depicted on the canvas did or thought.

All this forces us to look at the world from a different point of view, to accept all people and their positions. And if empathy is one of the main resources of human happiness, then art is a very important source of it.

Art teaches us empathy and the other. Do a little experiment. Imagine a room in an art gallery with a picture hanging on the wall. Let it be the Mona Lisa. Think about how many millions of people have seen this painting. Now realize that when you look at a work of Leonardo da Vinci, you feel connected not only to him and his vision, not only to the woman depicted in the picture, but also to all those people who admired this work just as you did. What is it but empathy in its highest form?

Art evokes emotions

The emotions that arouse works of art have great power. It's not always joy or happiness. Often we can cry over a book. We may be upset by a sad melody. Or we may experience fear and anxiety when looking at a picture of military operations. But art always arouses our emotions in one way or another. And it is especially important to realize this when in everyday life we forget about how much emotions affect our state and mood.

Art makes you think

Art always makes us think. Wondering what the secret of the Gioconda smile is? Why did Raskolnikov commit his terrible crime? How could Beethoven create such amazing music when he was deaf? We spend hours looking at pictures, reading criticism, to understand what exactly the writer wanted to say with this or that description. We watch documentaries that explain exactly how amazing architectural monuments were built. We read biographies of writers, artists, and composers to understand what life events prompted them to create different works of art. After all, some of us write scientific articles and large dissertations on the subject of art. Art makes us think. Without this it is impossible to know neither one work. Without understanding what you see, look, and feel, art basically loses its meaning. It pushes the boundaries, trains our brain and teaches us to understand and always think. And all this brings happiness, but not momentary, but in a deeper sense. Scientists have conducted more than one study proving the beneficial effect of art on brain activity. For example, in 1993, researchers Frances Roche, Gordon Shaw, and Catherine Key conducted an experiment. The subjects were given the same thinking test, the difference was in the music that accompanied the task. It turned out that the subjects showed the best results when listening to Mozart. This effect was not observed with silence or oral relaxing instructions. There have also been many studies that prove that the music of composers such as Vivaldi and Bach increases mental abilities, allows you to concentrate better and raises your mood.

Art reduces stress

The coronavirus pandemic has forced cultural institutions to switch to a mode of continuous production of educational and entertainment products. Among these materials, there are also projects designed to support those who experience psychological difficulties, being locked up in four walls. Despite the fact that art therapy can not be called a new invention, it is still surrounded by many stereotypes. What can art tell us about a person? Should an art therapist be an artist? And the patient? What do art therapists do in museums and why do they need it? Artguide has studied the history of the issue.

"Art therapy allows you to explore your feelings, memories, and desires through art," says Stephen Legary, the first full-time art therapist at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. — I'm not trying to challenge you and explain how to create art. I want you to become more honest with yourself and feel like a creative person at least for a moment. I want to know what thoughts were born in your head when you were working on your work, what associations it caused. Sometimes clients tell me: "I didn't think about anything at all," and believe me, this is a real holiday for those who live with a serious psychiatric diagnosis."
