INTRODUCTION

"Masters" movement integrates swimmers of different age-categories - from 25 tills 90+ (1; 2). Most sportsmen, who take part in veteran competitions, were earlier highly-qualified swimmers, took part in competitions of All-Russian or International level. Also the representatives of other kinds of sport take part in veteran competitions -water polo, diving, triathlon and others (1). There are a lot of people among swimmers-veterans, who didn't go in for swimming professionally - swimmers-amateurs, who started to go in for swimming during adulthood. In other words, contingent of veteran swimming movement is diverse. In this connection, it is interesting to know the attitude of swimmers-veterans to training and competitive process, if there are any peculiarities and differences in the training process of sport veterans and professional sportsmen.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Research methods and research organization. 38 swimmers-veterans (men and women, equal quantity) took part in the research, the average age of the respondents was 53.

The aim of the research was sportsmen's attitude estimation to veteran movement and to the training and competitive process in terms of this movement. The following objectives were set:

- the peculiarities revelation of the training process organization among swimmers-veterans (men and women);

- the degree of importance revelation of this or that sports activity components in terms of veteran movement and own competitive activity for sportsmen;

- the attitude comparison of men and women to competitions and to veteran sport.

Research methods: questionnaire survey, methods of statistical data handling.

The respondents were offered to choose the main component among such components of sports activity in veteran swimming, as communication with friends, sports result improvement, health improvement, medals gaining and free time organization. It means they were offered to choose the component, which is the main reason or motive for them in order to go in for veteran swimming.

The participants of the research ranged the following components of own competitive activity according to the degree of importance: medals gaining, competitiveness, staginess, communication and the opportunity to see the results of training.

RESEARCH RESULTS AND THEIR DISCUSSION

According to the research results comparative table of the training activity peculiarities of men and women in the

category "Masters" was created. The answers percentage. of men and women are presented in

_Table 1 - Training activity of swimmers-veterans

Guided by health state 32% 42%

Taking into account the results of a questionnaire survey we come to the conclusion that most men and women (68% and 63%) train in an independent form. It is also seen that most swimmers formed the training program independently, guided by own health state or personal preferences. According to the number of trainings men, in the average, have one lesson more in a week than women. However, both men and women prefer to train 3-4 times a week.

Speaking about the aspects of sports and competitive activity in terms of veteran

movement, it should be noted that for swimmers-veterans not always sports activity is equal to competitive one. Most swimmers don't have an opportunity to participate in competitions very often that is why competitions become a kind of festival for them.

Tables 2 and 3 present the importance degree of different sports activity motives in veteran swimming for the swimmers-veterans (both men and women) and the importance degree of the separate components of competitive activity.

*- many respondents mentioned the opportunity to travel all over the country and the world in "Other reasons" aspect

The results of table 2 help us come to the conclusion that men and women consider taking care of own health the main reason for going in for veteran swimming. Also an important role for them plays the opportunity to communicate with friends. None of the respondents had the desire to win medals in veteran sport. It also should be noted that

The table shows that 42% of men and 32% of women choose the opportunity to see the result of trainings as the main reason for taking part in competitions. However, a great amount of women (37%) consider communication with friends the main reason for competitive activity.

Respondents don't consider the reason of gaining medals very important: most men gave this aspect the 4th place and more than half of female respondents (53%) gave it the last (the 5th) place.

Speaking about the importance of competitiveness as the component of competitions the results were the following: men gave it the 2nd place, women gave it the 4th place.

The same differences can be seen in "Staginess" aspect. For men (47%) it is less important component, for women it takes the 2 place.

CONCLUSION

The results of the questionnaire survey show that the training process of swimmers-veterans is conditioned, first of all, by sportsmen's health state and their subjective preferences. More than half of male and

none of male respondents considers veteran swimming the way to spend free time and it proves their serious attitude to the training process.

Table 3 presents the importance degree of each aspect for the respondents. In brackets we see the percentage of people, who had this or that kind of answer.

female respondents train independently, using own program. The number of the training lessons, in most cases, is 3-4 times a week.

The most important aspect in veteran swimming turned out to be health improvement and in competitive activity it is the opportunity to see the result of trainings.

Both men and women don't consider the reason of gaining medals important for going in for veteran swimming. Men also don't consider veteran swimming a kind of leisure activity.

The opinion of men and women was different according to some other aspects. Men think that staginess is the least important component, women gave this aspect the 2nd place. Competitiveness, in the opinion of men, takes the 2nd place after the opportunity to see the result of trainings, but women gave this aspect only the 4th place.

In general men and women have similar opinion concerning training and competitive processes in veteran swimming, but concerning some details their positions are different.
