Restoring the balance

Medical Humanities attemptsto restorethe balance, to help re-humanize medicine.

But, it is NOT only patients who suffer from this dehumanization.

Nowadays, health care professionals risk becoming alienated from the ideals that drew them to medicine.

This leads to high rates of burnout, depression, impairment and even suicide.

Thus-the re-humanization of medicine involves enhancing, restoring, and attending

to the humanity of students and health professionals as well as patients

I Abstract

I background: Literature, music» theater, and visual arts pay an uncertain and limited role in medical education. One of the arguments I ofien advanced in favor of leaching the humanities refers to their capacity to foster traits toat not only Improve practice, bm might also I reduce physician bumoul-an increasing scourge in today's medicine. Yet research remains limited,

I OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that medical students with higher exposure to the humanities would report higher levels of positive I physician qualities (e.g., wisdom, empathy, self-efficacy, emotional appraisal, spatial skills), while reporting lower levels of negative I qualities that are detnmentai to physician well-being (e.g., intolerance of ambiguity, physical fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and cognitive ¡weariness),

I DESIGN: An online survey.

I participants: All students enrolled at five U.S. medical schools during ttte 2014-2015 academic year were Invited by email to lake part I in our onHne survey.

I MAIN MEASURES: Students reported their exposure to the humanities (e.g., music, literature, theater, visual arts) and completed rating I scales measuring selected personal qualities.

I KEY RESULTS: in an, 7ЭЭ/ЗЮ7 medical students completed the survey (23.8%), Regression analyses revealed that exposure to the I humanities was significantly corrected with positive personal qualities, including empathy (p < 0,001), tolerance for ambiguity (p < 0.001), I wisdom (p < 0.001), emotional appraisal (p = 0.01), sen-efficacy (p = 0 02), and spatial skills (p=0.02). while it was significantly and I inversely correlated with some components of burnout (p - 0.01). Thus, all hypotheses were statistically significant, wilh effect sizes I ranging from 0.2 to 0.59.

I CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the association between exposure to the humanities and both a higher level of students' positive I qualities and a lower level of adverse traits. These findings may carry implications for medical school recruitment and curriculum design, ["(Science and humanities arej twin berries on one stem, grievous damage has been done to both in regarding [them),,, in any other light I than complementer (William Osier, Br Med J, 19t9;2;1-7).

304

there are situations and condition s health care in which the art of medicine has not only meaningful, but also measurable, effects that belong in the domain of science

If that is the case, then compassion for patients belongs in the domain of evidence-based medicine. (pp64)
