The third decade of the 21st century was marked by the emergence of a new strain of coronavirus, later called COVID-19. The rate of infection turned out to be very fast, subsequently spreading to the whole world and currently continuing for the last two years. Everything that was happening quickly acquired the status of a pandemic and affected many things familiar to us. This directly affected the activities of the church: representatives of the priesthood, contacts with parishioners, etc. The Orthodox clergy has developed before and is actively continuing to develop and carry out missionary activities in organizational and methodological terms. In this context, we are eyewitnesses of these events and at the same time we cannot ignore the influence of the Church on the behavior, conscience and worldview of people.

The Russian Orthodox Church treats the medical profession with great piety, this attitude is rooted in the ideological roots of Christianity, in which there is no ideological conflict. Evangelical virtues: love and service to others, prevention and relief of human suffering. And active cooperation between medical institutions and Orthodox organizations contributes to the concentration of attention on spirituality and ethics of medical practice. Moreover, such cooperation can stimulate debate on ethical issues in medicine, and reliance on religious ethical precepts can help find solutions in various situations, and debates contribute to the development of a culture of discussion.

The World Health Organization, which carefully monitored the epidemiological situation in the world, in January 2020 reported an impending threat caused by a new strain of coronavirus infection. Two months later, the situation in the world has changed: the epidemic that broke out in China has rapidly reached the

scale of a pandemic. All branches of human activity in this regard found themselves in completely different, new situations of everyday and social life.

The COVID-19 pandemic is an existing pandemic of coronavirus infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The first outbreak occurred in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.

The Russian Orthodox Church, of course, did not stand aside and its further actions taken to help parishioners, to preserve their health, make it clear that the clergy considers it their immediate duty to ensure the safety of their flock. That is why on March 11, 2020, the first meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church took place, at which His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, presiding over the meeting, addressed the Synod with an introductory speech: "I would like to preface our meeting with a few words about the situation in Moscow with the emergence of coronavirus. By the grace of God, we are not talking about an epidemic or a pandemic, there are only isolated cases; but the disease is very complex and insidious, and therefore it is necessary to stop its development at the stage when the process can still be controlled ...15 ».

The Holy Synod immediately expressed its concern about the global spread of coronavirus infection and its extrapolated impact on people. It is obvious that most people are affected by the epidemic, and many of them are at risk of contracting this disease. Do not forget about other consequences of this phenomenon: social and economic in particular. And in her message dated March 11, 2020, she also pointed out the need for preventive measures and thanked the medical staff and volunteers for their work. The Holy Synod also considered it important to observe preventive hygiene measures in parishes and monasteries, to carry out constant and careful monitoring, especially in areas where the situation with coronavirus is considered the most dangerous, and to provide, in particular, solutions for disinfection of regularly used icons and the use of disposable cups. In addition, it was stated that "it

is unacceptable to treat coronavirus infection lightly, ignore the instructions of doctors, neglect precautions and put yourself and others at risk." The Synod concluded its statement with an appeal to all members of the Orthodox community to unite and fervently pray for overcoming the disease.

In this regard, the Holy Synod on March 17, 2020, by its decision approved the document "Instructions to the heads of parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church and Orthodox churches, abbots and priests of monasteries about the threat of the spread of coronavirus infection", which was submitted in response to a request from Rospotrebnadzor and which contains rules for conducting sanitary and preventive measures in an epidemiological situation. The document, compiled in accordance with the canonical and liturgical tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church, sets out the rules for the performance of church sacraments during the pandemic, as well as other instructions on worship, pastoral practice and parish life. The prescriptions and instructions for church servants and parishioners were not spared. Thus, actions were regulated in relation to the decoration of the church, hygiene and attentive attitude to one's own health and well-being. Directly, the staff was instructed to teach parishioners these preventive measures and health-saving restrictions.16

As negative phenomena directly related to our society, epidemics sometimes radically change the human perception and lifestyle and relationships of people, depriving them of their habitual stability. This cognitive distortion is followed by changes in culture as a system of subjective and objective values. These changes indicate the active dynamics of the development of society in its beliefs. In this context, the Church, as a social institution, considers it its duty, together with the state, to prevent the destructive impact produced on the normal, stable life of society.

The ROC, one might say, reacted instantly to the appearance of a coronavirus infection on the territory of the Russian Federation. During the pandemic, the Church strengthened its ministry of mercy. Since the beginning of the pandemic, additional food and material assistance to those in need has been organized in most dioceses.
