TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE BASED ON THE FORMATION OF INDEPENDENT LEARNING SKILLS IN INFORMATICS STUDENTS

Annotation. This article explores innovative approaches to teaching English language skills to informatics students by emphasizing the development of independent learning skills. Informatics education focuses on technical subjects like programming, web development, and database management, where proficiency in English is crucial for accessing global resources and collaborating internationally. The article discusses strategies such as project-based learning, integration of authentic materials, peer collaboration, and the flipped classroom model to enhance both technical and English language competencies. By fostering independent learning alongside language acquisition, educators can empower informatics students to excel in their studies and careers in a globalized world.

Introduction. It appears that there are several interpretations of the notion of independent learning based on the various contexts in which it is being used in education. This is intriguing as, despite being universally accepted, different notions are comprehended when it comes to individual learning. In higher education, students' understanding of lecture material is greatly aided by independent study activities. Because student-centered learning is the main focus of most campus learning strategies, students can organize study groups to help with their tasks. Alternatively, even in the absence of special assignments from the lecturer, they can autonomously complete group learning activities. For instance, they can correct each other's English, writing, and pronunciation.

In today's interconnected world, proficiency in English is crucial for students pursuing studies in informatics. As the language of global communication and technical documentation, mastering English empowers students to access a wealth of knowledge, collaborate internationally, and advance in their careers. However, teaching English solely through traditional methods may not fully equip informatics students with the language skills needed in their field. Instead, integrating English language education with the development of independent learning skills proves to be an effective approach.

Integrating English with Informatics Education

Informatics education focuses on computer science, programming, web development, and database management, among other technical disciplines. To

effectively teach English in this context, educators can leverage the inherent connection between language and technology. By using English as the medium for learning technical concepts and skills, students naturally immerse themselves in both the language and the subject matter. For instance, coding tutorials, software documentation, and technical articles are typically available in English, providing authentic materials that enhance language proficiency while reinforcing technical knowledge.

Fostering Independent Learning Skills

Independent learning is a cornerstone of success in informatics. Students must continuously update their skills, learn new programming languages, and adapt to technological advancements independently. Incorporating English language learning within this framework encourages students to take ownership of their linguistic development. Projects that require researching, presenting, and documenting in English, such as creating applications or writing technical reports, cultivate self-reliance and critical thinking. Moreover, peer collaboration allows students to practice communication skills in English, fostering a supportive environment for language learning.

Implementing Effective Strategies

Educators can employ various strategies to facilitate independent learning of English in informatics:

1. Project-Based Approach: Design projects that integrate technical skills with English language requirements, such as developing a website with documentation in English.

2. Flipped Classroom Model: Assign English language learning materials for independent study, freeing up class time for interactive activities and discussions in English.

3. Authentic Materials: Utilize real-world materials like technical manuals and articles to expose students to specialized vocabulary and language usage.

4. Feedback and Reflection: Provide constructive feedback on language use in assignments, encouraging students to revise and improve their language skills.

5. Self-Assessment: Encourage students to set language learning goals and track their progress, promoting a sense of accountability and motivation.

Benefits of Integrating English Language Learning

Integrating English language learning with informatics education not only enhances students' linguistic abilities but also prepares them for the global workforce. Proficiency in English opens doors to international collaboration, research opportunities, and career advancement in technology fields where English is the primary language of communication. By developing independent learning skills alongside language proficiency, educators empower informatics students to navigate and excel in an increasingly interconnected and competitive world.

Conclusion

In conclusion, integrating English language learning with the development of independent learning skills is essential for informatics students. This approach not only enhances their technical proficiency but also equips them with the language skills necessary to thrive in a globalized society. By fostering a learning environment that encourages self-directed learning, collaboration, and practical application of English in technical contexts, educators prepare informatics students to become competent and confident professionals ready to tackle the challenges of the digital age.
