The economic development of Russia and the new Federal State Educational Standard are gradually making the Internet and ICT an everyday reality for majority of Russian students. Every day ICT becomes an integral means of communication for a large number of people. That’s why we are required the highly-developed and professionally-competent IT specialists for the expansion of international economic relations. As you know, English has become the «world language» nowadays and also the language of international technical communication. The knowledge of technical English is very important for students to become successful in professional career and in private life too. Their personal well-being and prosperity of the country will depend on how well they succeed.
The Federal State Educational Standard of secondary vocational education states that the main goals of teaching English for students of non-linguistic specialities are:
1. the ability to communicate orally and in writing on professional and everyday topics.
2. to translate foreign professionally-oriented texts with a dictionary.
3. to improve their own spoken and written language.
4. to know lexical and grammar material necessary for reading and translation of foreign professionally-oriented texts with a dictionary.
5. to enrich their vocabulary.
Computers have evolved so quickly that thousands of new terms and jargon words are used to describe devices that didn’t exist before. That’s why was created special learning course «English for computer users and the Internet» for students of IT specialities in our educational institution. I was guided the following criteria for the selection of training topics and texts:
1. topics and texts should be authentic.
2. information should be actual and relevant.
3. material should be issue-oriented.
4. source materials should be taken from respected textbooks, journals, sites.
It is also necessary to consider interdisciplinary approach i.e. to include in the program of special course the materials of special classes which students are dealing with at the moment. For example, we have chosen the following topics and texts: Parts of a Computer, Types of a Computer Systems, Input and Output Devices, Processing, Discs and Drives, Operating Systems, Spreadsheets and Databases, Graphics and Design, Multimedia, Programming, ICT Systems, Faces of the Internet, Email, The WWW, Information Security. The learning material contains texts for reading comprehension, texts for translation with a dictionary, pictures, diagrams, various training lexical exercises for developing oral and written skills, dictionary of computer terms. I introduce and practice new computer words and expressions before reading authentic texts, using different techniques: a short definition of a computer term, translation, guessing in context, the usage of a dictionary, a picture illustrating a technical process, etc. The

usage of a dictionary is an essential part of mastering new computer vocabulary, especially on-line dictionaries which help students to pronounce terms correctly. It is necessary to introduce computer vocabulary using situations where some words and expressions are presented in context which help students just guess the meaning of these words.
The professionally-oriented texts contains pre-text, text and after-text exercises which are the following:
1. listen and repeat computer words and expressions.
2. match the computer terms with their definitions.
3.look and fill in the diagram with correct terms.
4. make up your own sentences with new computer vocabulary
5. read the text and agree or disagree with the following statements.
6. complete sentences using the following expressions.
7. answer reading comprehension questions.
8. write the plan of the text.
9. retell the text.
10. discuss the topic according to the text, etc.
Independent students’ activity in teaching computer vocabulary plays a great role in developing their lexical and reading skills. They presents their own projects, presentations, research work, etc. using ICT activities.
In conclusion, we’d like to note that English is necessary in professional activity of IT specialists. Therefore, teaching computer vocabulary has to be the central part of it for the students of IT specialities and should be organized in a well-planned and regular basis.
