SURVEY CONCEPT DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE LONGEST AND DEEPEST IMMERSED TRAFFIC TUNNEL AT THE BUSAN GEOJE FIXED LINK PROJECT IN SOUTH KOREA
Abstract
The Busan Geoje Fixed Link Highway Project connects South Korea’s largest harbor Busan with the islands of Gaduk and Geoje by two major cable suspension bridges and a 3200m immersed tunnel. Crossing the Korean Bay eighteen 180m long and 28000t heavy pre-fabricated elements were sunk under off-shore conditions towards the sea floor in more than 50m depth where the elements were precisely aligned by giant underwater cranes.
Due to the depth conventional surveying techniques like geodetic plumbing would have failed. Thus innovative underwater survey and positioning such as acoustic systems and mechanical wire based techniques were developed and applied during immersion. Meanwhile inside the tunnel geodetic control supported by gyro surveys of the alignment and the GPS derived reference network was conducted in order to maintain the demanded accuracies and guarantee that failure would be no option.
When immersion was finished on schedule in May 2010 the longest and one of the deepest immersed traffic tunnels in the world was successfully completed with the last element being inserted at a closure of about 15mm.
