В эпоху, когда английский язык стал доминирующим языком во всем мире, во всех сферах деятельности, многие родители в наши дни задаются вопросом о том, какой возраст оптимален для того, чтобы начать обучать своих детей английскому языку, и стоит ли общаться с детьми раннего возраста на английском языке дома. Отдавать ли детей в детский сад, где общение и обучение проходит в английской языковой среде? Как влияет обучение английскому языку детей в детском саду в дальнейшем на изучение родного арабского языка и успеваемости детей в школе? Следовательно, данная статья исследует мнения матерей по поводу преподавания английского языка маленьким детям. Результаты интервью с 300 матерями, представляющих различные слои общества, показали, что 70% матерей считают, что наиболее подходящим возрастом для обучения детей английскому языку является 4-5 лет, а 70% предпочитают размещать своих детей в детском саду, где преподается английский язык, 50% предпочитают использовать общение на двух языках. Около 70% считают, что изучение ребенком английского языка в раннем возрасте не оказывает негативного воздействия на овладение ребенком родного арабского языка, более того, полагают, что он оказывает положительное влияние на успеваемость ребенка на последующих этапах обучения в школе. Результаты исследования показали, что среди матерей существуют неправильные представления о возрасте для изучения английского языка, о влиянии изучения английского языка для маленьких детей на арабский язык, а также о том, что причиной отставания в школе у учащихся средних и старших классов на английском языке является отсутствие обучения английскому языку в раннем возрасте. Кроме того, в данной статье приведен анализ результатов предыдущих исследований по обучению иностранному языку с целью определения данных распространенных заблуждений и стереотипов. В статье даны рекомендации.

English has become a global language. As a result, many Saudi parents are wondering what the optimal age for teaching English to their children is. Should they speak to young children at home in English, in Arabic or in both? Should they send their children to an English-medium kindergarten, teaches English as a subject or an Arabic-medium kindergarten only? Does teaching English (EFL) to Saudi children affect their acquisition of Arabic (L1) and their academic achievement in later years? The present study investigates parents’ perceptions of English acquisition and its effect on the acquisition of Arabic (L1) and academic achievement. Interviews with a sample of 300 mothers showed that 70% of the mothers in the sample believe that learning English should start in kindergarten. 70% prefer to enroll their children in a kindergarten that would teach them both Arabic and English. 50% prefer to speak English with their children at home. 70% believe that teaching English to young children has no negative effect on the acquisition of Arabic (L1) and has a positive effect on their scholastic achievement in later years. Findings also revealed many stereotypes and misconceptions among mothers about the optimal age for teaching English as L2, the effect of the acquisition of English on the acquisition of Arabic and on scholastic achievement, attribution of failure to learn English by junior and senior high school students to their learning English at an older age, i.e., grade 7, rather than any other factors. They also believe that children can learn both English and Arabic easily and effortlessly and can learn to speak English with a native accent. The second language acquisition literature was reviewed to clarify those common misconceptions and stereotypes. Some recommendations are given herein.
