Abstract: the article under discussion depicts the main reforms implemented in the power engineering sector of Uzbekistan. The authors of the article discuss the tasks and implemented measures of one of the main government decisions on the development of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Uzbekistan.

The rapid increase in the demand of energy has caused worry about its supply. The main sources of energy are conventional sources. They are non-renewable and exhaustible sources. The demand of energy has increased all over the world and the condition poses a threat on the sources of energy like petroleum and natural gas by the year 2030-35 if any alternative sources do not substitute or supplement them.

The Government of Uzbekistan gives high priority to the use of alternative, non-conventional and renewable energy sources as supplement to the depleting conventional sources of energy, i.e. Uzbekistan is seeking to modernize its energy sector. In the long term, the use of renewable energy sources for the development of Uzbekistan is obvious and necessary in order to ensure energy, environmental and economic security, as well as ensuring sustainable development of the republic's energy sector. The development of renewable and alternative energy sources is an indispensable condition for preserving natural resources for future generations, improving the environment [1, p.p. 3-5].

One of the main government decisions on the development of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the Republic of Uzbekistan is the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On the Program of Measures for the Further Development of Renewable Energy, Improving Energy Efficiency in the Economy and Social Spheres for 2017-2021" and this decision noted , that in accordance with the Program of measures to reduce energy intensity, the introduction of energy-saving technologies and systems in the sectors of the economy and the social sphere for 2015-2019, approved by the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. RP-2343 of May 5, 2015, a wide range of

measures to ensure energy saving in the sectors of the economy and social sphere has been implemented in the country in recent years [2, p.p. 2-6].

As part of the push for renewables, authorities are considering solar and wind power. Solar and wind will account for 2.3% and 1.6% of the country's power by 2025, if the plan succeeds. Presently Uzbekistan has only one solar power station (in Namangan Province), while workers are still building its first wind farm (in Tashkent Province). It is long past time in sunny Uzbekistan to consider renewable energy. Already a major user of water, Uzbekistan is planning to expand its hydro sector. 42 new hydro plants will be built and 32 more will be modernized by 2021.

Work is being carried out to expand the use of renewable energy sources, reduce the energy intensity of production, target the introduction into practice of domestic scientific and technical developments and research of advanced approved international energy saving technologies, implement priority areas in this area, as defined by the Strategy of Action for the five priority development directions of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2017 - 2021 years.

The Program of Measures for the Further Development of Renewable Energy, Improving Energy Efficiency in the Spheres of the Economy and the Social Sphere for 2017-2021, which includes target parameters developed by the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, JSC Uzbekenergo and JSC Uzbekhydroenergo, on the further development of renewable energy; list of investment projects for the development of renewable energy; a set of measures to promote the use of renewable energy sources and increase energy efficiency in the economic and social sectors for 2017-2021.

To fulfill these instructions, JSC "Uzbekenergo" with interested agencies carried out research and studied the potential of renewable energy sources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In addition, with foreign partners, i.e. Inter Gopa (Germany) in association with GEO-NET (Germany), the "Assessment of the potential for the development of renewable energy sources" was carried out with an assessment of the wind energy potential of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Based on the results of this work, an atlas of the wind power potential of the republic was drawn up, where it was recommended to build wind power stations on two sites. Both "Nukus" and "Zarafshan" have significant potential for the future development of wind power [3, p.p. 2-4].
