Introduction

Due to the acceleration of performance development, convenience, and generalization of artificial intelligence (AI) translation engines, their daily application fields and areas are also expanding day by day. In particular, as part of industrial and social innovation policies of the 4th industrial revolution and digital transformation era, the performance and processing of administrative and business documents by the government as well as companies has been done with a technological paradigm shift based on AI and data technology. It's progressing rapidly. The new leap in AI technology, on the one hand, suggests the possibility that mechanical intelligence can replace human judgment and work in various areas of society. In other words, AI technology is being used in various fields such as medical care, autonomous driving, newspaper article writing, and translation. In addition, companies are seeking ways to improve the efficiency of global marketing 'work' and the quality of customer service by introducing AI translation-based multilingual business solutions. In response to these changes, this paper intends to discuss the necessity and considerations for opening and operating an English writing course using an AI translation platform.

AI translation platform-based English writing curriculum design and operation

Characteristics of AI translation platform and reasons for its use

The AI translation platform applies the basic definition of the platform, which means the environment in which the software runs, and is based on the online, web, cloud, and on-premises MT tools encompassed by CAT tools and deep learning-based AI technologies. It is a generic term that encompasses 'AI machine translation', 'AI (machine) translation software', 'neural network machine translation (NMT) software', or 'AI (machine) translation tool' (Chun 2022: 222). There are various types of AI translation platforms such as Memsource, RWS Trados Studio, Smartcat, MateCat, memoQ, and Wordfast, and the likes.

The AI translation platform is an efficient multilingual translation tool that anyone can use easily and an optimized writing tool (including native language). In order to perform translation/writing work based on the AI translation platform, collaboration between human and machine translation is premised, and active intervention of human translators/users is essential to improve translation quality. In other words, although collaboration between the two parties is premised, the machine translation process led by a human translator must be performed, and the MTPE skill must be applied to improve the quality of the translation result. The MTPE skill, for example, performs translation work by applying user requirements, guidelines, related materials and references, and maintains document consistency by reviewing typos, terminology, and spelling. At the same time, the time and effort required for translation is reduced, but the efficiency such as cost reduction and productivity improvement increases. And since the user's bilingual/multilingual writing/translation ability is improved in this process, it is necessary to more actively expand its utility in the field of university education.

In addition, improving the ability to utilize the AI translation platform has a close correlation with strengthening the ability to perform multilingual business. And the learner's ability to automate office work and adapt to the smart office environment will contribute to strengthening digital literacy competency, which corresponds to the 21st century-type global talent and their requirements.

Justification for AI Translation Platform-based English Writing Class

The premise of text writing encompasses writing itself, and in particular, bilingual writing competency corresponds to the premise of expanding the humanities horizon. In addition, it contributes to the reinforcement of learners' self-efficacy by improving their ability to express their thoughts and opinions effectively. This is because writing competency has universal validity that does not presuppose differences and discrimination between languages and genres. The next 10 years will usher in ‘The Exponential Age’, led by the fastest and greatest technological change in human history. Humanities writing competency, digital literacy, and their expansion of adaptability to meet the needs of individual competency change required by the new era of revolution are essential, not optional.

Regardless of the field of study, the use of AI translation platforms/tools in writing subjects of Reinforcing bilingual ability by utilizing digital literacy and translation skills that can overcome language barriers and express individual capabilities in global business fields by utilizing artificial intelligence translation platforms/tools in liberal arts writing courses at universities regardless of major It will serve as a kind of 'game changer' that enables learners to grow and develop individually as well as become global citizens.

The basic competency that global citizens in the age of AI should have is, above all, to be able to adapt to the changing times through digital literacy. Therefore, the demands of learners who are consumers of university education services are also changing rapidly. And in particular, the demand for fields related to the 4th industrial revolution and AI or its adjacent fields is rapidly increasing. This means that liberal arts-related subjects at universities, regardless of major, need to be operated by sensitively reflecting the trend of change without exception. In particular, various subjects can be operated based on the use of AI translation platforms/tools to share the benefits of technological development in the age of AI as well as expand learners' self-efficacy. By the same token, it can serve as a very efficient educational material in writing-related subjects including translation because the AI translation platform is an optimized multilingual (including native language) writing tool. It can contribute to strengthening learners' global business competency by operating the curriculum by upgrading to the bilingual writing (native language + English) competency level that meets the subject and purpose required for each situation in the business practice field, rather than just writing in English. In other words, by using an AI translation platform, it is possible to more actively expand a learner's writing ability. It can be used as a customized education and learning platform.

The reasons for opening an English writing class based on an AI translation platform are summarized as follows: 1) The English writing class based on the AI translation platform has a relatively comprehensive range of topics compared to the classical writing class method. And the needs of learners can be met practically because realistic discussions can be included more actively; 2) In addition, it is possible to learn the process of improving the quality of translation and writing results through collaboration between science and technology and humans because mechanisms that can overcome the learner’s limitations of language barriers can be utilized,. In this process, both instructors and learners can experience and recognize that it can ultimately lead to the practical implementation of human enhancement; 3) This is because it can promote individual growth and development by simultaneously cultivating not only multilingual writing/translation skills, which are basic competencies of 21st century global talents, but also digital literacy, by motivating learners for self-learning and strengthening their sense of self-efficacy.

Multilingual writing environment based on AI translation platform

AI translation platform users/professional translators carry out the project after setting them according to the purpose of use/project based on the tool or platform developed by the company. A translation project using an AI translation platform can not only allow multiple translators to work at the same time, but also ensure consistency and efficiency of translation through the construction of TM (Translation Memory) and glossary of terms and expressions. In addition, since translation supervision and management is performed interactively with the translator, the quality of translation is also systematically managed, which has the advantage of reducing the time and cost required for final delivery. Therefore, it should be included in the curriculum design including education on the types of AI translation platform, the pros and cons of its use, understanding of the environment, in which the web-based or cloud-based AI translation engine operates, and its unique functions and usage. Although there are differences in services such as unique functions and screen layout provided by the free and paid versions for each platform, TM and vocabulary, quality control, PM functions and comments or group share, it is generally no difficult to use other platforms if you master one platform.
