Open Memorial Table of Academic of Boris Vladimirovich Gendenko
On January 15, 2013, at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the solemn opening of a memorial plaque was held in honor of Academician Boris Gnedenko, the founder of the Ukrainian probabilistic-statistical scientific school.
The celebration of the memory of an outstanding scientist has become a major event in the scientific and cultural life of the University, as well as for the whole school of probability theory, represented by the bunch of followers and students of Academician Boris Gnedenko both in Ukraine and abroad. The memorial plaque was produced by Honored Art Worker, professor of Lviv National Academy of Arts Vasyl Gogol, well-known sculptor-portraitist in Ukraine.
The ceremony was attended by the vice-rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, professor Volodymyr Kirillich, dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Professor Mikhail Zarichny, dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Professor Yarema Savula, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Ihor Kovalenko, professors of the T.K. G. Shevchenko Yuriy Kozachenko and Mykhaylo Moklyachuk, Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Statistics, Professor Yaroslav Yeleyko, Head of the Department of Higher Mathematics, Professor Bogdan Kopytko, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematical and Functional Analysis Yaroslav Prytula.
The son of Boris Gnedenko, associate professor of the Moscow State University named after MV, also took part in the opening ceremony. Lomonosov Dmitry Borisovich Gnedenko and grandson of the academician Boris Dmitrievich Gnedenko.
The speech was spoken by the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Professor Mykhailo Zarichny, who emphasized the importance of this event in the life of the faculty and told about his glorious scientific traditions.
In the speeches of well-known scholars, students and followers of Boris Gneden, grateful words were spoken about the academician as a great scientist and extraordinary person.
Son of Boris Vladimirovich - Dmytro Gnedenko, Associate Professor of Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov, shared his memories with the audience: "We arrived in Lviv in late July 1945 and left Lviv at the end of 1949. My father worked at Lviv University for four and a half years. Of course, my childhood memories are quite separate impulses, but what the father told me and what is described in the memoirs can be considered the happiest years in his life. Here he worked fruitfully in science, here he had friends, with whom he spent his free time, there was a friendly atmosphere. He always remembered these years with sympathy and thanked for the fact that in 1945 the Academy of Sciences sent him to work in Lviv. At the end of 1949 he had to leave Lviv to Kiev. Therefore, I am very grateful to the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the leadership of the Lviv University, and thank my beloved students Boris Volodymyrovych - Igor Kovalenko and Volodymyr Korolyuk for remembering Boris Volodymyrovych at Lviv University. And the proof of this is the discovery of this memorial plaque. Thank you so much to all of you! "
On behalf of representatives of the Kyiv School of Probability Theory were Professors of the Kyiv National University named after. T.G. Shevchenko Yuriy Kozachenko and Mikhail Moklyachuk. In particular, Professor Y. Kozachenko noted that Boris Vladimirovich Gnedenko after a long time worked at Kyiv University after Lviv, he was actually the founder of the theory of probabilities in Ukraine, the organizer of this school. "I am very grateful to the Lviv University, in particular the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, for opening a memorial plaque. There is a portrait, written in oil, which at one time gave me Academician Korolyuk, "Professor Yuriy Kozachenko said. "This is an extraordinary person, a talented mathematician and a teacher, a man who by his works entered the history of many universities. He exalted himself and our University, working for about five years at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. Academician Gnedenko lectured on many disciplines. Here he wrote his best textbook on probability theory, programming manuals. He basically worked at the junction of mathematics and science (theory of modeling). Many of them had students, among them - academics and professors ", - noted in his speech vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work Volodymyr Kirillich. Volodymyr Mykhailovych thanked everyone who supported the initiative of restoring the memorial plaque, as well as the academic's family.
