New fragments to «The Deeds of Suppiluliuma»
Introduction
In this article are published all the available new fragments that belong to the Hittite text «The Deeds of Suppiluliuma» (further DS). Originally this text was edited and published by H. G. Guter-bock under the title The Deeds of Suppiluliuma as told by his son, Mursili II (Journal of Cuneiform Studies, 10, 1956).
The main source for the data on new fragments have been Catalogue des texts Hittites (CTH) by E.Laroche (1971)1, its on-line version www.bu.edu/asor/HITTITE/HittiteHP.html and especially the on-line version of the Kosak's Konkordanz der Keilschrifttafeln I-III, (1992-1999, StBoT 34, 39, 42, 43) at the www.hethport.uni-wuerzburg.de/hetkonk/ Besides A.Kassian kindly allowed me to look at the CTH with A. Korolev's notices, among them suggestions of the new fragments.
I have collected 25 fragments, and this is not the complete list, since 4 fragments have been unavailable to me2. Out of these 25 there are several joins and duplicates to the text published by H. G. Giiterbock, some have been separately published by Ph.Houwink ten Cate, H. Klengel and others, quite a few were presented by S. Heinhold-Krahmer in Arzawa (Theth 8, 1977). Still there remain fragments that have never been published as to my knowledge.
The fragments are divided into 3 groups, (1) those that are joins and duplicates to the already published text or those with clear position within DS, (2) those that certainly belong to DS, but which position within DS can't be established for sure, and finally (3) those that may belong to DS.

L. 20: Here we have the expected Dat. Sg. of apa-. But in KUB 19.10 apa- is in Dat. Pl. Perhaps in the latter case the reference is to enemy countries rather than to the army.

Translation

27': Here and elsewhere in this text Presens is clearly Presens historicum freely alternating with Preterite.
29': Note again difference in number between this fragment and KUB 19.18 Vs. I 25, where we have handai- in Plural. The verb in KUB 19.18 must denote then Suppiluliuma and his warriors. The meaning of the verb is also remarkable as it should be something like «come upon». It could be a development of «join», which is given by HW2 III 165-166 as the only meaning for anda handai-.
Line 34' is obscure as it is difficult to establish the performers of the actions. The following suggestion looks attractive: the enemy has to flee and leave the booty behind. But in this case we have to admit that both da-ir and is-hu-wa-is describe enemy's actions,

though the former is in plural and the latter in singular. Despite the noted difficulties I follow the translation of H. G. Giiterbock. Cf. HED, E-I, 406. In the duplicate, however, this line seems to be omitted. The whole line looks unnecessary.

The text was published by H.Klengel (Oriens Antiquus, 7. 1968).
4' For the translation of pedan appa epp- cf. CHD, P, 345. 6' KUB 34.23 13' has pi-e-da-an-ti. It seems to be a scribal error for the phrase pi-e-da-an-pat har-kir, which is well attested. (HW2, H, 285; CHD, P, 345). Moreover, pat and ti signs look alike. In case it is not a scribal error H. Klengel suggests that this is Dat.-L. Sg. of either * pedant - or participle of peda - «carry, transport».

Vs. 3' Forrer's restorations.
Vs. 8' 6 ME — Forrer's reading, KBo 5.6 gives 7 ME Rs. 6' The first sign could be hu- but for the 2 additional horizontal strokes beneath the horizontal of hu. The collation is necessary. huwai-, however, is the most expected verb.
Both Vs. and Rs. evidently belong to DS; the position of Vs. is clear, while Rs. is comparable to fr. 50, where Nerik and Piqqainarisa are also mentioned. These fragments are very likely to be duplicates, as KBo 22, IV suggests. In any case KUB 21.10 (fr. 50) doesn't belong to Arnuwanda's annals (Cf. O. Carruba, Die Annalen Tuthalijas und Arnuwandas, Fs. Otten, 1973, p.39). A. Korolev in his article New readings, Joins and Duplicates places fr. 50 a bit higher, than fr. 33 on the same tablet.

These fragments undoubtedly belong to DS, but it is difficult to determine their position. With the exception of Happala the towns are not mentioned anywhere else in DS. Lines KBo 14.42 2'-7' tell us about a war in the north, then Hannutti is engaged in conflicts in the lower country, where he later, under Mursili II, became a governor. Suppiluliuma I fought with Kaskaeans in the north in the end of his reign, and all this could have happened in the last years of Suppiluliuma. Another possibility is to place them close to KBo 12.25 and KBo 12.26, where Kaskaean invasions are also mentioned, and to fr. 18-22, where the campaign takes place approximately in the same region and where we meet Hapalla (fr. 20 i 10). One must note, however, that Hannutti appears for the first time in fr. 28.

The join KBo 19.49 and KBo 19.51 was suggested by P. Meriggi in his article Zu einigen Stellen hethitischer historischer Texte (Fs. Otten, 1973, p. 207). The joined text was published by S. Heinhold-Krahmer (Arzawa, THeth. 8, 1977, p. 289-291).
KBo 19.49 Rs. IV 10' CHD restores the form of the verb lu-luwai- «to sustain» as 1 Pret. Act. Sg. lu-lu-wa-nu-un (CHD, L-N, 82-83). It matches the sense perfectly, but the traces of sign following -wa- don't resemble -nu-. Thus we have to admit a scribal error: lu-lu-wa<-nu>-u[n?

H. Otten when publishing KBo 19 (1970) suggested that this fragment belongs to DS. P. Meriggi labeled it as fr. 19a. The idea about existence of the Suppiluliuma I annals was put forward by von Schuler (Kaskäer, 1965, p.39ff. and note 231), though he implied other texts. This fragment was published by S. Heinhold-Krahmer (Arzawa, THeth. 8, 1977, p. 287-288).
Rs. III 1' and 4' S. Heinhold-Krahmer restores the name Alal / ntalli because in KBo 14.4 and KBo 14.6 the names of Alantalli and Zapalli are mentioned together.
Anzapahhaddu and Alantalli are known only as Suppiluliuma's opponents from Arzawa. At least E. Laroche in Les noms des Hittites doesn't adduce other attestations. In this fragment the narration is conducted in the 1 Sg., so if we accept the existence of Suppiluliuma's annals (s. comments on KBo 19.49 + 19.51), then it belongs to these annals. Otherwise this fragment should be placed near to fr. 18 and 19, where we meet Anzapahhaddu, Alantalli and Zapalli.

If we accept S.Heinhold-Krahmer's restoration of l. 5' URU-an u-e-t[um-ma-an-zi te-eh-hu-un (after KBo 12.26 IV 18') and agree that KBo 19.54 and KBo 19.49 + 19.51 are parts of the same tablet, then KBo 19.49 Vs. I and KBo 19.54 represent a parallel to KBo 12.26 Rs. IV66, which undoubtedly belongs to DS. What concerns KBo 19.54, it could belong either to Suppiluliuma's own annals (because of 1 Sg. of the verbs, see comments on KBo 19.49 + 19.51) or to DS.

The enumeration of towns and repeated word for border lead us to conclusion that this fragment describes the period of stability between campaigns with more or less stable borders. But the exact position of this text within DS is hard to establish.

H. Klengel writes in Inhaltsübersicht to KUB 48, VI that № 84 describes a campaign in Northern Syria for the mountains Nanni and Hazzi are mentioned, and he compares it with fr. 8 DS. In the online version of Cataloque des texts hittite (http://www.bu. edu/asor/HITTITE/HittiteHP.html) this fragment is considered to be part of DS, though it is not obvious. Besides, am-me-el-la and -IA in Vs. I 11' could point to speech from the first person (see comments to KBo 19.49 + 19.51).
