MODERNIZATION OF THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM BY MEANS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES.

PART 3. ENGINEERING ASPECTS1

Introduction. In1 our previous articles we informed the readers about the general aspects of the informatization of TSU management system and about curriculum planning [1, 2]. This article discusses engineering aspects of building computer networks, of choosing equipment and its installation in the building of the Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (IMPI), Tambov State University named after G.R. Derzhavin (cluster #1). The present article is actually a report on the realization of this stage of the project.

General information. Fig. 1 shows a general scheme of computer network realization. The most significant part of the management system is database which is stored on the server. The database contains the information about students, staff, educational process, curricula, etc. The following persons take part in the institute management: director, deputy directors, heads of departments and laboratories. The most important objects of control are as follows: distribution of academic time, time-tables, internal and external information flows, academic achievements of students, etc.

Today the IMPI has six departments, which are in charge of educational process, and twelve laboratories, which are in charge of research work. 978 full- time undergraduate students and 45 postgraduate students study at the IMPI. Management of each department and laboratory is carried out by its head. Director carries out general management of the Institute. The director subordinates to the rector of TSU. The director has three deputies: deputy director for education, deputy director for research, and deputy director for social life.

Information flows between the objects of this system are very different. The most intensive information flows are between:

- director - deputy directors;

- director - heads of departments;

- deputy directors - heads of departments;

- deputy directors - heads of laboratories;

- heads of departments - professors;

- professors - students.

Other information flows are comparatively weak, for example, director - students, or department 1 - department 2.

Since the IMPI is an integral part of TSU, interaction functions between the rector’s office and other institutes are carried out by directors and deputy directors of institutes.

Directors and deputy directors must have an opportunity to get access to any information of database. At the same time, heads of departments, professors and students must have access only to the part of information dealing with their activity.

Network realization.

Step 1. Taking into account a significant mobility of the staff inside the IMPI, a necessity of frequent redistribution of rooms occupied by departments, laboratories and class-rooms, we decided to make a wireless network. This decision was approved at the workshop in Koblenz in June 2005, with Professor K. Troitzsch, Professor A. Arzamastsev, Associate Professor Yu. Zusman, programmer D. Sletkov and others taking part in the discussion. Since the equipment for wireless communication has a limited effective range (50 meters), we felt it was necessary for its reliable work to start with drawing up a diagram of all storeys of the IMPI building. Figures 2-5 show these diagrams. Numbers on the diagrams show the rooms to be covered by the wireless communication. The space occupied by rooms which are nor meant for study or research are indicated on the diagrams as Unused Space. The size of cells on all the diagrams equals to one meter, which makes it easier to determine coverage zones of the equipment, to calculate the length of cables, etc.

Step 2. Some time before (July 2005) we bought a set of equipment for realization of the project (11 computers Celeron-D 315/DDR 256 Mb/ HDD 40 Gb/ CD-ROM /250 W/ 17’’ Samsung 783 DF and two printers HP Laser Jet 1320).

Now using funds of the project we purchased the following equipment which we selected taking into consideration coverage of service zones (1-4 floors of the building) and price/quality ratio.

To repair the existing institute local network we used about 1000 m of the network cable UTP 5e level (305m) Taiwan 200 Mhz (Neomax), ten network adapters Compex RE100 ATX/WOL PCI 10/100, ten network switches Complex Switch PS2208B <8ports 10/100, Desktop> and about a hundred network joints RJ-45 8P8C for the network of category 5.

While making new sections of the local network we used wireless equipment: 25 pieces of wireless adapters, standard 802.11 g (54 Mbit/s) Trendnet TEW-423PI PCI; 8 pieces of wireless access-points (Trendnet TEW-430APB), standard 802.11 g combined with bridge functions (54 Mbit/s).

As a server we used a server platform Intel SC5300BD2 (Socket604, iE7520, SVGA, Ultra320SCSI, LAN 2x1000, 6DDR, 730W) in with we installed: proces-

sor (CPU Intel Xeon 3 HHz/ 1Mb L2 cache/ 800MHz BOX 604-PGA Active Fan), two memory rules (Original SAMSUNG DDR-II DIMM 512 Mb ECC <PC-3200> Registered+PLL, Low Profile) and two Winchesters (HDD 73.4 Gb U320SCSI Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 <373207LW> 68pin 10000rpm.)

To ensure uninterrupted work of the server we used a continuity of service unit (ИБП APC SUA 750I Smart-UPS 750 VA USB\Serial 230V).

Step 3. We mended the existing (wire) network which covers at present about 65% of the whole area shown in Figures 2-5.

Step 4. We installed the equipment for the wireless network. At present the IMPI network is being tested before the installation of software.
