Listening as an independent type of speech activity is a necessary link in the conditions of academic education. At the present stage of development of network technologies, teaching with the help of network resources comes to the fore. Audio materials up to 6 minutes long can be used for classroom work. In the process of teaching in theoretical disciplines, materials of video lectures with a duration of more than 40 minutes can be used. The use of network resources at the university increases the stimulating, informative, and evaluative and controlling significance of the material provided, which contributes to the development of a more creative approach to the aspect of listening in a modern university. The range of professionally-oriented situations should be expanded in such a way as to increase the motivation of students, as well as to contribute to the formation of speech skills for solving real communication problems using the knowledge gained in the classroom in the practice of the English language. Listening, being an integral part of oral communication in a foreign language ensures the adequacy of the speaker's speech activity in various situations of intercultural communication at a professional level. Intercultural communication is the main characteristic of a foreign language learner in modern society; therefore, the most important fact is how the use of strategies helps to achieve a communicative goal.

Listening to foreign language speech seems to be an important skill in connection with the transition to the information society and one of the main ways of obtaining information. In the field of professional communication, the transmission of information to speakers and the reception of listeners within the framework of the communicative act are due to how accurately, fully and adequately the message is perceived. In this regard, the most acute issue is the training and development of listening skills among students of professional linguistic training. Based on the foregoing, it should be emphasized that listening also plays an important role in the formation of intercultural competence in the professional training of students of linguistic specialties. At the present stage of development of network technologies, training with the help of network resources comes to the fore. Thus, in classes on the practice of speech and the culture of speech communication of language universities at all stages, it is necessary to devote as much time as possible to listening, aimed at a complete understanding of the information. The Internet offers endless possibilities for working with foreign language sources, including the use of authentic audio materials. Many of them can be used during classroom lessons, as well as when posting on the sites of academic disciplines for independent work of students. UNESCO (http://ru.iite.unesco.org/) defines open educational resources (OER, English Open Educational Resources) as educational or scientific resources placed in the public domain, or released with a license allowing their free use, processing and distribution. OER are provided free of charge through information and communication technologies and include entire courses, teaching materials, modules, textbooks, videos, audio, texts, software, and any other means, materials or technologies to provide access to knowledge. (Note that open educational resources (OER) should be distinguished from electronic (computer) training courses (ELC), designed to accompany the process of mastering a certain discipline without using paper media and providing the organization of educational activities of students, the necessary teaching materials and means of control. is a complex of educational and methodological materials that provides a student with the opportunity to use a computer to master the content of a training course in the volume provided for by the program, i.e. it can be equated to an electronic textbook.

TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is the name of a non-profit organization in the United States and the intellectual conferences it organizes. The mission of the foundation is "ideas worth spreading", for which lectures (or TED Talks) are freely available on the conference website for download and on YouTube video hosting. TED Ed's YouTube channel currently has nearly four million subscribers, and each of more than 1,200 videos have an average of 500,000 views. The speakers are mainly well-known personalities - former and current politicians, businessmen, scientists, well-known public figures, writers and journalists. TEDx is an independent TED-licensed event. TED-style independent conferences are held in various countries, cities and universities, both in English and in the languages of the organizers, and are posted on a separate TEDx Talks channel.

The popularity and availability of TED Ed as an educational resource is confirmed by the results of a survey, which was attended by 45 undergraduate students studying English as a second foreign language at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow City Pedagogical University. The survey found that 78% of students have heard of a resource like TED Ed, while

71% of those surveyed regularly watch TED Talks in English. (By comparison, only 5.5% of those surveyed watch TED Talks or lectures in a similar format in a "main" foreign language, German or French). The greatest interest for students is represented by topics related to education, psychology and interpersonal relationships, issues of self-development and lifestyle, and the least - presentations on the topic of history, art, science and politics.

The TED Ed media resource (http://ed.ted.com) can be categorized as massive open online courses, which are innovative educational developments. The main difference between innovative electronic resources and traditional ones is their interactivity, which presupposes the use of active-activity forms of learning and thereby stimulates independent learning activities of students [3]. So, students do not work with ready-made tasks for a written text in a textbook, but are involved in a multidimensional educational and creative process.

In the process of studying theoretical disciplines, materials from video lectures by representatives of modern linguistics can be used. The network offers an incredible amount of videos over 40 minutes in length.

The following can be proposed as independent types of work with video materials over 40 minutes in length:

- compilation by students of a vocabulary aimed at mastering keywords and concepts on a given topic;

- development by students of a set of exercises;

- written presentation of what was heard in the Summary form;

- compilation by students of a glossary on the topic.

The listed types of work should not only form students' linguistic, but also intercultural competence, which is a condition for professionally oriented teaching of a foreign language in order to prepare highly qualified specialists of any profile.
