Kazakova-Apkarimova Elena

The article emphasizes scholarly and practical significance of studying the cultural category of the image of the city for the humanitiesue, whicn is associated with the use of the concepts of image and public image in urban marketing. Apparently, the use of these concepts significantly deepens the scientific understanding of the city associated with the study of urban social space and the identity of urban residents, as it is illustrated by the analysis of publications of Russian and foreign scientists. The author pays special attention to the issue of individuality of the cities in the context of perception and formation of the image of a city, emphasizes the need to study the image of a city in a historical context, as well as to analyse its evolution in time. Since sustainable images and ideas related to the city are represented in the individual works of the local writers, the author refers to the works of one of the most famous Ural writers D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, using the example of the Ural cities of the end of the 19th century to reconstruct the views of his contemporaries regarding the uniqueness or typicality of the Russian provincial city. The image of the cultural landscape of the Ural city with its inherent individual characteristics was recorded in the travel notes and essays by D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak ( From Trans-Urals to the Volga , Across the Trans-Urals ). The author analyses his description of the sociocultural space of the Ural city, the essential assessments of the state of spiritual and material culture, especially the perception of the image of a provincial city and the urban subculture during the Russian urbanization of the late 19th century. The article uses the method of anthropological analysis of the texts (travelogues) at the intersection of identity studies and discourses using the historical and philological analysis. The article argues the statement that Mamin personalized the images of the Ural cities. To a large extent, the image of the city in the perception of Mamin-Sibiryak was influenced by the peculiarities of the region’s natural landscape with its rivers and mountainous terrain. It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of the industrial landscape for the formation of the image of the Ural city in the works of Mamin-Sibiryak. The binary oppositions (Europeanized city / provincial city, industrial city or factory-city / rural city, railway station / city outside railway communication) that appeared in the travelogue of D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak reflected the inconsistency of the historical process and the dynamics of urban development. Creating a lively, dynamic image of the Ural city of the late imperial period of Russian history, Mamin demonstrates the gradual overcoming of the cultural backwardness of the province from the capital during the Russian urbanization of the second half of the 19th century.

XIX в.

Introduction

The topic of the interpretation of space, especially urban, has become extremely relevant due to the spatial turn in the modern science.1 The study of the history of the Russian province today is being carried out in the process of actively searching for theoretical and methodological tools to solve new scientific problems. Ya.M. Tsy-ganova offers one of the possible ways and aspects of studying the province by considering it as a special historical and cultural space.

Sociologists pay special attention to the relationship between the social and

"5

physical space in the study of the phenomenon of the city. Researchers of urban everyday life focus on routine materiality, refer to the actions of people in space and human activities aimed at changing the urban space itself, whilst analysing the refraction of urban space in people's minds and its transformation into images. The spatial approach is complemented by the imagological one, offering new opportunities to ur-banists.

Robert Park emphasizes the importance of the local research focused on the study of humans in their environment under real life conditions.4 The city appears to be a kind of laboratory instrument, vividly reflecting the peculiarities of the human nature and behaviour. However, while Robert Park is inclined to think that a city is a special organization with a typical biography, and that individual cities have enough similarity to extrapolate the knowledge gained from one city to other cities,5 other researchers focus on the individuality of the destinies of the cities and their images of urban space.6

The understanding of the space by Henri Lefebvre, a well-known researcher of

n

everyday life, whose ideas deserve special consideration, should be noted separately. It is about three types of space: material space accessible to physical sensation; representation of space, given a meaning and conceptualized; the space of representation, implying feelings and emotions being experienced.8 The image of the city was considered by Lefevre within the context of the study of urban space representation.

Humanitarian understanding of the categories of image and public image of a city is of scientific and practical importance. On the one hand, it is associated with the use of these concepts in marketing practices. One of the main resources in develoing the city is its image. It is obvious that the use of these concepts significantly deepens the scientific understanding of the city, and often the research in this area is conducted at the interdisciplinary level (at the intersection of cultural science, philosophy, history and philology). Thus, analysing the city in the ideal dimension, in her philosophical and cultural dissertation work Yu.A. Kuzovenkova, chose to study the image of the city as a form of historical reconstruction. The works of D.N. Zamyatin, N.Yu. Zamyatina, B.V. Chikhichin are devoted to the study of images as the factors that influence the development of the cities. Many predecessors worked with artistic images of the city: N.P. Antsiferov, I.M. Grevs, M.S. Kagan, Yu.M. Lotman, V.N. Toporov. Yu.A. Kuzovenkova emphasizes the importance of the image of the city for the identification of a person in a culture, since its formation is associated with the process of human self-knowledge (the image of the city can represent its creator, it also represents the cultural identity of the city and the era). The researcher points out that, acting as an image, the ideal dimension of a city is a means of solving

practical tasks (economic, political, social, spiritual) facing the city. The image is used to represent the target group and the city.9

It is quite difficult to give a single definition of the image of the city for the humanities. A.K. Mokrousova has in mind the concept associated with the urban social space and collective identity whilst referring to the image of the city. She writes that by linking the space around them with significant events both in their life and in the wider historical framework, a person gives it a certain meaning, constructs it, in fact creates a space that was not there until the person had described it in one way or another, without including the events in one string of events or another. The construction of a social space, the researcher believes, is, in some way, the creation of its image. Based on the research of a semiotics scholar and an architect Kevin Lynch, who widely used the concept of the image of the city, A.K. Mokrousova refers to the concept of the everyday image, following her foreign colleague, rethinking that the generalized image of the city is made up of individual ones; despite the fact that the individual images can vary greatly, they always have a certain core, which allows you to create a generalized image.10

A.K. Mokrousova uses a concise definition for the notion of the image of a city, referring to Edward Soya, who claimed that forms of social relations and social life arise, develop and change within the materially real and socially imagined context of cities. According to A.K. Mokrousova,

the socially imaginary context, can be called a synonym for the image of the city, because, as a matter of fact, whatever the material environment, in the end its perception and interpretation greatly depend on people's knowledge about this place, historical, cultural, political and other components, emotions caused by this place, enclosed in symbols and memories; respectively, the actions or the formation of some beliefs will ultimately be based on this socially imaginary context.11

When researching the image of a city, it is important to consider the achievements of foreign scientists. As an example, the American urban planning specialist Kevin Lynch investigated the perception of urban space and the formation of the image of the city. The specialist emphasized that its individual elements are perceived not by themselves, but in relation to the environment, to the chains of events associated with it and to the memory of experience. The scientist pointed out the subjectivity of the perception of the image of the city and its fragmentation. Studying the mental image of the city, Lynch pays special attention to clarity, or readability, of the urban land-

scape, meaning by this the ease with which parts of the city are recognized and put into an orderly picture. Lynch stresses that the image has both practical and emotional importance for the individual. The scientist's attention is drawn to the landscape because, in his opinion, the memorable landscape is the framework on which culture erects its socially significant myths. Lynch analysed individual elements of the image of the city, for example, the path, landmark and border. The specialist drew attention to the significance of the scope and breadth of the opening views, the greenery and water as elements of the urban landscape. Another statement that requires reflection is that every individual image is unique, it covers some content that is never or almost never passed on to others, but at the same time it coincides with the public image which has different types of environment binding.

Researchers emphasize the identity, the special atmosphere and individuality of cities. S. Romashko argues that the individuality of the cities has not only a 'methodical' value in the form of a criterion for comparison, but also a very real and vital

1 9

value for the existence of a city in principle.

Referring to the topic of the unique and specific in the cities, the same Lynch considers external reference points, notices the tendency of people to rely on a system of reference points, that is, to perceive the unique and specific rather than extended and generalizing. Since the use of landmarks involves the isolation of one element from the set of others, the key objective characteristic of the elements of this type is

singularity, the presence of some property that is unique and memorable in the gen-

eral context.

In anthropological disciplines, research in the area of urban culture is interpreted in two ways: first, the study of cultural phenomena is carried out in the context of opposing urban and rural (urban culture versus peasant, common folk); secondly, scientific research that is substantively related to a city, which implies the analysis of urban realities or images as an end in itself (confined to a particular city or cities is obligatory, since the subject of analysis is always the cultural specificity of a city represented among its inhabitants. The peculiarity of each case, however, is not raised to the absolute, since cultural texts of different cities can show stereotypy on many levels. The second trend is genetically related to the historical. The local legends (legends related to the history of the city) attract researchers' attention.14 The steady images and ideas related to the city are represented in the individual works of local writers. In modern science, the development of the notion of urban (local) text seems to be of interest currently. M.D. Alekseevskii, M.V. Akhmetova, M.L. Lurye, for example, understand a system of mental, speech and visual stereotypes, steady plots and

behavioural practices related to any city and relevant to the community, identifying themselves with the city as a local text.15

The study of artistic images and mythology in travel literature provides bountiful benefits for dedicated philological studies, in which such specialists as V.V. Abashev, E.G. Vlasova, E.A. Makarova succeeded. The latter writes that travel literature is a letter in motion, generating images of countries and cities. The researcher refers to the opinion of D.N. Zamyatin:

Traveling is an ideal case when reality can immediately be represented and interpreted as

an image, thus 'naked' perception is forced to carry out the acculturation of the surmounted geographical space straight away.16

The peculiarity of "literary travels" is the inclusion of oneself as a thinking and feeling subject into the space. The author perceives space as a source of knowledge and at the same time it is a universal environment for rendering the author's feel-

17

ings.

Speaking about the historical component of the image of the city, it is obvious that it is necessary to study the image of the city in a historical context, to analyse its evolution in time. On the example of the cities in the Urals of the late 19th century, it is possible to reconstruct the ideas of contemporaries about the uniqueness or typicality of the Russian provincial city, which was reflected in the sources of personal origin. The image of the cultural landscape of the Ural city with its inherent individual features was recorded in the travel notes and essays by D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak (From Trans-Urals to Volga, Across Trans-Urals). It is important to analyse the description of the sociocultural space of a Ural city, the essential assessments of the state of spiritual and material culture, especially the perception of the image of a provincial city and urban subculture during the Russian urbanization of the late 19 th century. In this regard, the work of D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak is of great scientific interest for urbanists. This article uses the method of anthropological analysis of texts (travelogues) at the intersection of the study of identities and discourses using historical and philological analysis.

the ignorance of its inhabitants, remoteness from railways and highways, D.N. Ma-min-Sibiryak's travelogue focuses on the individual origin of a particular Ural city, the originality of its physiognomy and the uniqueness of the biography. The documentary nature of the travelogue and the historicity of thinking inherent in D.N. Ma-min-Sibiryak, which was emphasized by I.A. Dergachev, allow reconstructing the socio-natural and socio-cultural specifics of the Ural city. I.A. Dergachev pointed out

the many-sidedness of the personal author's perception of life - from scientific, logically rigorous analysis to the vivid living pictures and anxious, emotional impressions, the writer's use of the method of artistic and journalistic analysis of reality.19

The modern researcher E.G. Vlasova notes that, thanks to D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak's newspaper essays and V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko's journal publications, the journalistic stage of the Ural travelogue commenced, which related to the reinterpretation of modernity in the perspective of creating an image of the Urals (the Ural city, in particular). In contrast to the writer's travelogue of the first half of the 19th century, which formed the tradition of a critical (negative) attitude to the modern life of the Urals, other motifs appear in D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak's travelogue. The writer updated the modernity of the 1880s, including journalistic stories about the current events in

90

the local life in his travel essays.

In A.V. Bortnikova's thesis, the fictional-documentary variety of short prose by D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak of the 1880s is represented by two genre forms: essay-travelogue and journalistic article, as well as their hybrids (for example, a travelogue

91

with a journalistic beginning).

A.V. Bortnikova notes that the desire for documentary accuracy and a detailed description of the area as bright characteristics of a travelogue are combined with the essay specifics by Mamin; there are such author's subtitles as notebooks, travel notes, pictures. In her opinion, a characteristic feature of the genre in question is the active position of the author-narrator, expressed in his active compositional role, as well as

in the emotional colouring of the narrative. The pictures of natural landscapes and man in them completely "obscure" the inner world of the traveller himself.

A.V. Bortnikova relates Across Trans-Urals. Travel Notes (1887) to travelogue essay works with a journalistic element, pointing out the use of statistical, historical, journalistic and local history-ethnographic materials by Mamin-Sibiryak in such works.24

The observations made by the writer in direct contact with the realities of the local culture and residents are a unique source of information about the dynamic existence of Russian culture in general and the urban subculture of the Urals in many of its forms and dimensions.

When exploring the cultural landscape of the Ural region or a separate provincial city, it is important to take into account the external point of view, represented by visiting people, travellers, and internally, allowing you to record the processes of the mythologization of space (for example, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, who lived a significant part of his life in Yekaterinburg, believed in the myth that Yekaterinburg was the capital of the Urals). V.V. Abashev, analysing the Ural landscape descriptions in the works of D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, points to the writer's inner view in relation to the Urals - the point of view of the inner observer, although the experience of living far away from the Urals helped Mamin, a native of the place, to see the Urals. Having lived away from his homeland, the writer saw anew "with a special prominence, a

9 S

lively and original life" of the Urals. "I wanted to relax, to travel, to see, to get to know new places and generally shake things up after the winter spent in Moscow," writes D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak in the essay Across Trans-Urals written as a result of the writer's trip to the South Urals in the summer of 1886.26

The methodology to analyse the travelogues in the field of cultural space studies presupposes comprehension of a journey as a sociocultural and geographical phenomenon, the description of a journey as a form of representation and interpretation of the real cultural and spatial material. It is also important to identify the motivation for the journey. Mamin writes about his "long-time desire" to go to the South Urals, "the need to live for three weeks on Kumyz" [the word was used in the original text], and most importantly, the traveller stresses, "to go around the Urals, precisely to those places that will be soon taken over by the Samara-Ufa-Zlatoust railway line that was under construction." Realizing the importance of the railway factor for the evolution of the Ural cities, the author writes:

The important thing was that the Trans-Urals - this was our bonanza - would be connected by railways with Russia, in other words, under the influx of new trends and new

27

people, which accompany every new railway, it will quickly lose its real original face.

The formulas of originality of Trans-Urals, the Urals and the cultures of individual Ural cities are the leitmotif in Mamin's travelogues. To a large extent, the originality of the appearance of the cities in the Urals was associated with the natural-cultural features of their landscape.

And ahead of Sopka [Ural Sopka], the white churches and stone houses of Zlatoust have

already been carved out in a deep hollow - the view is really wonderful and unwillingly

28

striking in its originality.

The traveller had the most pleasant impressions of his acquaintance with the natural landscape transformed by man:

I personally like the brisk mountain river Ai most of all and the mountains surrounding it: Kosatur, Mies, Palenaya, Tatarka, etc. In the depths, Taganai rises in heavy blue masses, divided into three branches - small, medium and large. We walked for a long time along the Ai river bank, where behind the factory such a beautiful quay with such cosy, charming

Mamin's emphasis is on the individuality and originality of Yekaterinburg, "too sharply different from all other cities in European Russia." The expert on the history of Yekaterinburg explains:

The fact is that this city already bears Siberian character, although not quite; in the cities of European Russia, the main elements are bureaucracy, merchants and nobility, in Siberian cities there are merchants and bureaucrats, however in Yekaterinburg the centre of gravity

30

rests solely on the industrial class.

Mamin-Sibiryak refers to the second half of the 19th century, when the power of mining engineers "came to naught." The writer creates vivid images of this city: a handsome city, a good city, an indigenous capital for the whole of the Urals, a totally European city and even, maybe, European city with some frills, the city is free and lives a completely independent life, a huge brisk city, a rich city with a reputation, especially among cheaters, of certain Eldorado, a brisk and fast industrial city.

In the comparative description of Yekaterinburg and Perm in the travelogue of D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak, a culturological category of own / alien stands out in relief. In the very first lines of his work, the writer confesses:

Every person has a certain weakness: one likes Mirgorod, another Tsarevokokshaisk, the third one prefers Ardatov, and I like Yekaterinburg more than other cities... if you like it,

31

it's even a kind of patriotism - a feeling of praise in any sense.

In the travelogue of Mamin-Sibiryak, a completely different image of the Russian province is created, devoid of the unequivocal negative colouring that is typical to Russian fiction. On the example of Yekaterinburg, the writer claims that "even in a distant province, one can live in a European way," in his opinion, the cohort of people who could make up the 'society' in the true sense of the word increased."33 It was during the post-reform period that important changes took place in the life of the Ural province:

Forced to part with life in the capital, especially since the improved means of communication were increasingly bringing the suburbs closer to the centre. In the recent past, everything that was a little out of the general level was inevitably squeezed into the capitals, now every provincial force will find its application on the spot if it is really a 'force' and not 'a barren flower.'34

At the same time, the writer is far from idealizing the province, criticizing the lack of publicity, believing that

the provincial disgraces will be specifically developed immediately, as a serious local press will develop, and now all incriminations must be carried out through the capital print and

35

come back to the province.

The ambivalence of provincialism perception is inherent in the writer's works while getting acquainted with the cities of South Ural. The writer focuses on the provinciality and even the patriarchal nature of the unique culture of the inhabitants in Zlatoust. The traveller sees some advantages and serious disadvantages in this. In particular, speaking of the former, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak remarks:

Everything is peaceful, you cannot hear a rollicking song or a drunken scream as it happens in the evenings in the real cities; It is necessary to add to Zlatoust charms the unusual cheapness of the local life the way the people in remote places can live, very far from the real benefits of all-devouring centres.36

However, the guests quickly felt some inconvenience. A misunderstanding happened when the old lady in the apartment where the travellers stayed, "flatly refused to give" the guests something from her meal, which turned out to be lean (the old woman did not want to give them her dishes either). It turned out that in the county town of Zlatoust there were no "rooms for passers-by," but neither a single hotel or a

'in

tavern where one could have dinner.

Having resorted to the help of a local pharmacist, the writer inquired why there were no gardens anywhere in Zlatoust, why Zlatoust Germans were fleeing from their 'nest' and where one could dine. Thanks to the talkativeness of a local resident, the new circumstances of the urban life became clear:

The climate is bad here, he explained: even vegetables do not ripen ... For example, beans or cucumbers. Yes ... You will find lunch at the club and better if you go straight to the noble one. Yes ... As for our Germans, then, you see, there is absolutely nothing to do here. It makes you leave. Production is being reduced everywhere, there are no crafts. The only hope left is for the railway, what it will bring us... The railway line is being run from Ufa

38

to our place, and there are now a whole lot of railway engineers staying here.

"Citing these little things as a characteristic of the everyday situation of a remote provincial town, not yet affected even by the tavern-frock-coat civilization," the writer points to the other gaps in the socio-cultural life of Zlatoust:

There is also no secondary school: neither a gymnasium, nor a primary gymnasium, but only one county school and it seems to have been opened recently. It surprises you: only

39

one uyezd (parish) vocational school for the entire city.

Speaking of Yekaterinburg, Mamin notes "a few curiosities of a purely provincial life":

Such a brisk and fast industrial city, which has four banks - the state, the Siberian, the Kama-Volga and the city ones - yet at the same time it does not have a public library and not a single bookstore! As you wish, however this is kind of unique.40

Understanding the importance of social organizations in the provinces, especially academic societies, the writer points to the availability of three scientific societies in Yekaterinburg: the Urals Society of Natural Science Lovers (USNSL), "branches of the Imperial Technical Society and, it seems, also branches of the Society to promote Russian trade and industry." Using the words "it seems," the writer notes that the last two societies existed only on paper, and USNSL was very limited in funds and existed thanks to the dedicated activities of people like O.E. Kler.41 However, Mamin is an optimist here too, hoping that "maybe the scientific industrial exhibition being projected in Yekaterinburg, which will be delayed until 1887, will improve the society's affairs."42

Yekaterinburg. City Council and the house of Poklevsky-Kozell in Pokrovsky Avenue. Photograph. 1910s. Photo from the archive of the Institute of History and Archaeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The writer saw the uniqueness of the subculture of Zlatoust in combining the elements of urban and mining factory cultures in it:

The overall impression of this town is the most peaceful and good. It is something in between a factory and a city, but all this is as small as is necessary for 20 thousand people.43

The peculiarities of the cultural landscape of this "city-factory" are given to them in several descriptions of its "external physiognomy." One of the descriptions runs as follows:

There is a big pond in front, Mount Kosatur presses into it, and in the depths, there is a mountain again, and the last houses hide at its foot ... As a matter of fact, the city is not visible yet, but only the outskirts and part of the embankment with the cathedral. Small settlements or dachas are already built on the shore - it is difficult to make it out - as this is in the foreground.44

Another view of Zlatoust:

... in front of the factory dam, underneath there is a number of factories, a pretty square near the cathedral; on the right there is a big management house, which looks like a landlord, and then neat houses stretched in regular rows, resting on the mountain that makes a sharp turn in the background. Ahead, there is also a mountain with a chapel on its top.45

D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak writes in detail about the German influence on the evolution of the urban culture. The mosaic of the bigger picture is silhouetting itself whilst adding separate sketches: these are the "windows with white shutters" ("they have learned from the Germans"), and "a friendly German song" (reaching from one of the

boats in the evening at the factory pond), and a description of the street populated by Germans:

From a small market a wide street goes uphill, where a German colony has settled; there is a pickaxe, a bit forgotten, and on the other side of the pond - there is Friedental. The Zlatoust Germans owe their existence to the factory of cold arms, based in Zlatoust in the 1820s; they were 'ordered' from Germany as good craftsmen who could spread the new production.46

The external attributes are described by the traveller with some irony:

On the dam, where a wooden platform is built, which stood out on the stilts in the pond, sits the "cleaned audience" - several ladies' hats, two mining engineering caps and even some military uniform. A real city, in one word, and everything is being "shaped," as our

47

coachman would say.

According to the researchers, the evolution of the Ural city and its image was strongly influenced by the railway factor. The influence of the Ural mining and metallurgical railway on the development of Perm was very noticeable for the contemporaries. Enterprises of transport engineering revived in Perm. In the late 1870s, the main workshops of the Ural Railway were built in the city, where the workers la-

boured, repairing the locomotives and cars, manufacturing spare parts for the needs of the road. Along with the industrial construction of civil engineering, the city was improving. The city authorities of Perm actively encouraged the stone construction. The pavements decorated the streets. In the travel scetches From Trans-Urals to the Volga, D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak reflected this transformation of Perm, which is also celebrated by his other contemporaries: "However, it appears that Perm is somehow being rearranged! - Some merchant was surprised, admiring from the ramp of the embankment."48 The construction of new houses, the stone theatre, was also noted by the author himself, and his character conveyed the admiration of other eyewitnesses:

Well, I beg your pardon, we can say that this very Perm has a sense of grandeur about itself owing to this railway ... Indeed! Not even the former name remained ... There are the houses piled up, with the equipment established everywhere - just look at it!49

However, even Mamin, who was critical of Perm, admitted:

The view of Perm is good indeed. The mighty northern river has overflowed here with an enormous reach that sink out of sight; on the left high bank, the city itself is scattered beautifully: at the bottom of the pier, near the railway station and on the top, there are churches, houses, cottages and just shacks.50

Conclusion

The travelogue makes it possible to understand the city not just as a "thing in itself," but as it was perceived by the contemporaries. D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak's travelogue shows the diversity and variety of the space of the Ural province. Unlike A.P. Chekhov, who expressed the opinion of an external observer about the similarities of the provincial cities of Russia ("In Russia, all cities are the same. Yekaterinburg is the very same as Perm or Tula. It looks like Sumy and Gadyach. Bells ring great, velvety"51), Mamin personalizes the images of the Ural cities. He distinguishes small towns, which differ little from villages (for example, Okhansk), the ancient cities such as Solikamsk and Cherdyn (with the old ecclesial architecture), cities built under Peter the Great era (Yekaterinburg, the original capital of the Urals), cities that are a cross between a city and a factory (Zlatoust). To a large extent, the image of the city in the perception of Mamin-Sibiryak was influenced by the peculiarities of the region's natural landscape with its rivers and mountainous terrain. It is impossible to exaggerate the significance of the industrial landscape for the formation of the image of the Ural city.

Mamin reveals the province to the reader in dynamics: some cities are in decline, others are beginning to transform in the post-reform and subsequent periods. The writer notices significant changes in the culture of the cities in the Urals in the mid-1880s, due to the growth of the urban population, increased social differentiation and sociocultural heterogeneity, the increasing value of urban characteristics under the influence of scientific and technological progress, the close intertwining of traditional elements (based on religious principles) and modern culture in everyday life of citizens, the interaction of civilizational components of the western and eastern types (with an obvious empowerment of the European origins), due to the Eurasian position of the region. The binary oppositions represented in D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak's travelogue (Europeanized city / provincial city, industrial city or factory / rural city, railway station / city outside railway communication) reflected the inconsistency of the historical process and the dynamics of urban development. Creating a lively, dynamic image of the Ural city of the late imperial period in Russian history, Mamin testifies to the gradual overcoming of the cultural backwardness of the province from the capital during the Russian urbanization of the second half of the 19th century.
