Аннотация научной статьи по языкознанию и литературоведению, автор научной работы — Eshboyeva D.A.

There have been many different theories and schools of thought over the years when it comes to methods of teaching English and reading. Since the majority of the population seems to read automatically and learns to read with little direct instruction, this tends to give the misconception that systematic reading instruction is unnecessary. Thankfully, studies conducted in the last decade have shown not only the benefits but also the necessity of explicit phonics instruction for a solid English foundation.

EFFECTIVE WAYS IN TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Summary

There have been many different theories and schools of thought over the years when it comes to methods of teaching English and reading. Since the majority of the population seems to read automatically and learns to read with little direct instruction, this tends to give the misconception that systematic reading instruction is unnecessary. Thankfully, studies conducted in the last decade have shown not only the benefits but also the necessity of explicit phonics instruction for a solid English foundation.

To become a good English teacher, one must educate oneself to become one. In fact, a person has to have a desire to become a good teacher. Of course, you cannot deny that there are some gifted people who may not need any education or enthusiasm to become a good teacher. More power to those God gifted people. Well, I am sorry that I am not one of those people. I will be afraid to use the word "gifted people". Nevertheless, I can say with my heart that I have a sincere desire of wanting to become a good English teacher and I trained myself to become a good English teacher.

Teachers use a variety of methods to teach English as a second language. Each student is unique and respond well to a particular method. A good teacher makes use of the items that he or she has and the learning styles of the students. Adapting your style to your class can be an effective teaching method.

• Language ImmersionIn April 2000, the National Institutes of Health released the findings taken from the all-inclusive study on methods of teaching English conducted by the National Reading Panel. The following is taken from that report:

“In the largest, most comprehensive evidenced-based review ever conducted of research on how children learn reading; a congressionally mandated independent panel has concluded that the most effective way to teach children to read is through instruction that includes a combination of methods.”[2]

Encourage students to ask questions, during class, to understand difficult topics. Learning style and ability vary in each child. Teaching English and grammar require knowledge of different learning styles and methodologies successfully to reach every student in the classroom. Sometimes called “differentiation,” using many different teaching methods appeals to the widest possible range of students and helps improve comprehension and self-confidence by finding their strengths and expanding on them.

In a language immersion class, you speak nothing but English, using visual aids and facial expressions to help students understand what you are saying. This technique can work well with very young children, who are learning their first language as well. At first, students will have a difficult time understanding what you are saying and what you expect of them. Prompt them with the correct answers.

Bilingual Resources;

Some teachers prefer to use bilingual resources in their teaching. This makes use of the student's knowledge of her native language to translate into English. You can use bilingual resources with older students to help teach particular grammar points, such as when to use various verb forms.

Games;

Games can increase English knowledge while keeping students interested in the class. With young students, you may want to try games that are active, such as throwing an object to hit a vocabulary card and having them use that word in a sentence. You can also use quieter games, such as Bingo or word puzzles.

Visual Aids;

Visual aids such as flash cards can help quickly build vocabulary. For example, you may go through a stack of flash cards to teach new words, and then use those words in a game. Without the cards, students may not know what you are talking. You can also use visual aids such as English movies or TV shows to teach the students about American culture.

Role-playing;

Conversational practice is key to improving students' English abilities. Set the students up in different scenarios--such as ordering at a restaurant or going to see a doctor about a health problem--and have the students role-play the conversation. You could have students practice with you or with one another.

Relevancy;

The more relevant your classes are to the students' lives, the easier it will be for them to learn. For example, if you are teaching a business English class, you will want to use terms and role-plays that are likely to happen in a business context. For example, students could practice English grammar by responding to customer-service inquiries.
