DIETARY CONSTITUENTS, ENDOCRINE CANCER AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK.

Epidemiological evidence (Miller et al. (1994). Eur. J. Cancer 30A, 221-223) suggests that cancer incidence could be potentially decreased (Breast (27%, endometrium (30%), colorectum (50%) and stomach (68%)), generally attainable by decreased salt-preserved meat and increased vegetable and fruit consumption. Indeed dietary factors in plants are possibly bioactive compounds suppressing early cancer or preneoplasia e.g. indole metabolites, aromatic thiocyanates, lignans, isoflavonoids (also antioxidants), etc., perhaps learned from the ‘ancient’ physicians of India and elsewhere. The Tsim Tsoum concept is based on ‘a return to natural foods’ enjoyed some centuries ago when ingestion of rn-3 and rn-6 were roughly equal unlike today in Western societies, and fruits, vegetables, green vegetables, seeds, eggs and honey, etc. These authors provide evidence for assertions concerning ‘protective’ effects or otherwise of flavonoids (e.g. citrus fruits: hersperin); isofavonoids (e.g., soya, legumes: genistein, diadzein, Biochanin A, formononetin, equol, etc); polyphenolic flavonoids (e.g. green tea: the antioxidants (-) epigallocatechin and its -3-gallate); lignans (e.g. grain, pulses: enterolactone, enterodiol, etc.) where many have weak oestrogenic properties, and exerting their effect in endocrine tissues. Alpha-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids, constituents of the Mediterranean diet, are associated with one of the lowest reported incidence of cardiovascular disease in Crete and Kohama Island (Japan) but the diet is also rich in phytoestrogens. High w-3/w-6 fatty acid ratios are thought to reduce the level of pro-inflammatory responses in blood vessels and elsewhere. This substantial body of evidence, and much more beside, indicate that dietary factors associated with the pre-industrial era appear as universal markers for holistic health and these may be important in the pathogenesis of some cardiovascular diseases and cancers, which is the main consideration of the Tsim Tsoum concept.
