Introduction

The unique complex of 15 archaeological sites located by the riverhead of the river Koika (Kiyka) which flows from palaeolake Sakhtysh in Ivanovo Region was covered in more than 90 scientific works published both in Russia and abroad (France, Finland, Slovenia, the USA). Most of them were published in Russia in the form of research articles and joint monographs1. Some materials form the sites Sakhtysh-I, Sakhtysh-IIa and Sakhtysh-VIII were published abroad . However, it should be pointed out that hardly any general research has been published summariz-

ing both separate sites and the complex as a whole. The only materials published in full are those of Sakhtysh burial grounds represented by a hundred and a half burials at Sahktysh I, Ila, VII and VIII3.

Starting from 1962, the sites and burials of Sakhtysh micro-region were explored for more than 40 years by the Upper Volga expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (RAS) under the guidance of D.A. Krajnov and later - of M.G. Zhilin. The chronological range of the materials obtained while excavating the sites covers the periods form the early Mesolithic to the Middle Ages.

Excavations of the largest scale were carried out at Sakhtysh I, II, IIa, VIII and XIV. The information about the results of the work was presented on regular basis in the annual "Archaeological Discoveries" and in separate publications. The materials of the burial ground Sakhtysh-IIa were most fully documented and studied in terms of archaeology, anthropology and chronology4.

In the present article we will consider the artifacts made of organic materials which were found in the burials of the site and "shrines" of Sakhtysh-IIa. The choice of the subject of the research was not random. It was determined by the fact that not all archaeological sites where the remains of the burials are found preserve organic matter (bone remains of the buried, tools, ornaments, ritual objects made of bone, antler and wood). This circumstance leaves open the possibility of incorrect or inaccurate interpretation of the materials. Thus, for example, the presence of amber in one of the graves at Vashutino site (Yaroslavl region) gave rise to the assumption that it was a female burial due to the conventional notion that those who decorated themselves with amber were women5. However, owing to the good condition of the skeletons in the graves of Sakhtysh-IIa burial ground, after anthropological determination it was possible to establish that amber adornments were present only in the graves of men6. Therefore, burials with amber where the bones of the buried were lost or for some reasons it was impossible to define the age and the sex of the buried can be associated with the burials of men or boys. At least, this assumption can be correct for the burials at the sites in the center of the Russian Plane. Here, the beginning of the "amber" burials was connected with the arrival of separate groups of people (predominantly men?) from the eastern Baltics in the early Volosovo period. However, it

should be noted that, despite being very seldom, amber ornaments are present in female graves of the late Neolithic in the eastern Baltics, specifically, at Zvejnieki burial ground . Along with amber, ornaments of animal teeth and bone were also found in a number of graves at Sakhtysh-IIs. This fact allows us to compare them with the similar ornaments originating from female graves without amber in order to specify their cultural and chronological attribution.

Multilayer and multifunctional site Sakhtysh-IIa, discovered in 1986 by D.A. Krainov and E.L. Kostyleva, was explored by two excavations from 1987 till 2015 (interruptedly)8 (fig. 1).

The total Excavated area equals almost to 800 square meters. als dating from the Lialovo and Volosovo cultures (4th-3rd millennia BC in traditional chronology) were examined (fig. 2).

Figure 2. Burial ground Sakhtysh-IIa. Excavation plan for excavation l(drawing by E.L. Kostyleva and A.V. Utkin )

Excavation 2 was located in the peaty section at the mouth of the rivulet flowing into the Koika river. The cultural remains mostly represented by the artifacts from the Mesolithic, the early and middle Neolithic were contained by the 2-meter thick strata and had quite distinct stratigraphic segmentation. The population of this section of the site was engaged in fishing, which the finds of various fishing tools reflected.

The character of the lithological layers (peat, sapropel, peaty clay sand and loam) allows preservation of the objects made of organic materials: in the upland section of the site (excavationl) they are represented by the articles made of bone and antler and in the peaty section (excavation2) they also include wooden objects connected with fishing (basket traps, poles).

Of particular interest are the artifacts from the burials of the Lialovo and Volosovo cultures and Volosovo "shrines". The burial inventory from the graves of the Lialovo culture is mostly represented by bone instruments and in the graves of the Volosovo culture it includes ornaments made of amber, bone, stone and animal teeth.

Main Body

Artifacts made of bone and antler from the graves of Lialovo culture

In total, 15 graves dating from the Lialovo culture were found at Sakhtysh-IIa (fig. 2)9. Three of them (no. 22, 46, 61) contained articles made of bonelO (fig. 3)10.

They were located next to the skeletons in a definite order and were evidently connected with the buried and had not get into the burial pits from the cultural layer when the pits were filled up11.

A wide dagger, a narrow knife with a shaped pommel, and a pendant from elk in-

12

cisor with a groove for tying (fig. 3: 5-8) were found in young woman's grave (no. 22). A piercing tool, a wide knife and a long antler rod of unclear purpose (fig. 3: 1-3) were attributed to the grave of a young woman with an infant (no. 61). Male grave no. 40 contained a short awl from elk metapod (fig. 3: 4). The position of the tools on the skeletons is of particular interest. The awl was 8-10 cm away from the left humeral bone of the man (grave no. 40). The piercing tool was found immediately on the right humerus of the woman (grave no. 61). Probably, in both cases the sharp and quite long objects served as pins holding together the animal skins which the dead had been wrapped in before the burial.

9 Two of them were double and thus in total they contained 17 skeletons.

10 Besides, an embryo-like figurine was found under the cervical vertebrae in the female grave no. 65. The other eleven graves contained no inventory.

11 The only exception is the notched point fond in the grave no. 22. Attributing it to the burial under consideration is doubtful. See Kostyleva, E.L., J. Treuillot, and A.V. Utkin. "Bone inventory of Lyalovo culture Cemetery burials Sahtysh IIa (Based on IvSU museum of archeology funds)", Ivanovo State University Bulletin. Series "The Humanities", iss. 4 (15) (2015): 54-55.

12 The pendant was found under the lower section of the legs while clearing the skeleton. It might have been brought into the grave with the filling earth or removed by rodents from the upper body.

Figure 3. Burial ground Sakhtysh-IIa. Bone inventory from the graves of Lialovo culture: 1-3 - no. 61; 4 - no. 40;

5-8 - no. 22 (drawing by M.N. Mikhailova processed by E.L. Kostyleva)

The dagger and the knife from the grave no. 22 must have served hunting purposes. The dagger was located on the back of the right femoral bone and might have been placed into a leather sheath. It could be easily reached with the right hand if necessary. The narrow knife was located on the inside of the left tibia and might have served as a "spare" knife. Holding the dagger in her right hand, the huntress could take the knife from the boot and thus act with both hands.

The knife form the grave no. 61 placed by the head of the woman had a different shape: it was wide and crescent-like. Judging by the remains of a resin-like substance at the point of the knife, it was inserted into some kind of handle, most likely, made of wood. The knife was certainly intended for cleaning and cutting fish. The mentioned above antler rod of indistinct purpose that was also located by the head is unique. have been an antler pressure flaking tool or an insertion into the handle of a retoucher. Antler flaking tools were in use since the Mesolithic but they became most common in the Volosovo culture. According to M.G. Zhilin, such flaking tools were in common use in the Northern hemisphere from the Stone Age till the Ethnographic

present and were used with various handles .

In 1981, an antler rod similar to that from the grave no. 61 but smaller in size and the only one of its kind wooden handle for it14 were found among other objects from the ritual hoard at the site Ivanovskoye-III (Yaroslavl region). The grave no. 61 might have contained a similar wooden object which was not preserved because of the soil conditions. Unfortunately, trace examination of the instruments was not carried out. The articles from the grave no. 61 were lost while in museum storage and were not available for further examination15. The tools from the graves no. 22 and no. 40 were examined for the technique of making them16.

The absence of any ornaments in Lialovo graves at Sakhtysh-IIa, except for the mentioned above pendant from the grave no. 22, is quite difficult to explain taking into account the fact that six predator teeth pendants were found with the skeleton of

17

a 1-3-year-old Lialovo child (grave no. 21) at the neighbouring site Sakhtysh-II . However, no artifacts were found with the three adult individuals from that same site.

The presence of ornaments in child graves of both Lialovo and Volosovo may suggest special attitude towards children and desire to protect them from illness and death by means of amulets of different kinds such as animal teeth or amber.

Artifacts made of bone and antler from the graves and "shrines" of Volosovo culture

18

53 graves and two "shrines" of Volosovo culture were found at Sakhtysh-IIa . 36 graves contained ornaments which, undoubtedly, were not decorative but served as amulets or marked the status of the buried.

Volosovo burials can be subdivided into early (19) and late (20). Their chronology has been substantiated more than once19. Amber ornaments were frequent in the early, predominantly male, burials while serpentine ornaments occurred in the late female graves. It is these types of ornaments that constitute the chronological attributes. Along with them, a number of graves contained ornaments made of shale and animal bone and teeth. We consider it important to identify the frequency of occurrence of ornaments made of different materials in the same graves, to compare the ornaments from early and late graves, and to reveal their chronological and gender features.

Ornaments were found only in 13 of the 19 early Volosovo graves.

20

None of the early burials with amber contained stone ornaments . Animal teeth pendants accompanied amber ornaments in four male graves (no. 2, 9, 28 and 34) and one child grave (no. 17) (table 1). In one female grave (no. 64) it was the only type of ornaments. The other burials with amber belonged to men (no. 3, 4, 15, 39) and a child (no. 53) and contained on other ornaments. Animal teeth pendants are not numerous - 9 pieces only. Seven of them were made of bear teeth (incisors, a molar, a ground down canine), one of elk incisor and one of a predator's tooth (fig. 4).

20 The only exception is the partially destroyed grave no. 44 where a fragment of amber button and two serpentine pendants were found with the bones. The ornaments are likely to have originated from the cultural layer and have no connection with the burial. Moreover, serpentine ornaments occurred only in the female burials of the late Volosovo period. The buried, however, dates back to the early Volosovo period and according to the data of anthropologists was a male. See Table 5 in E.L. Kostyleva, and A.V. Utkin, The Neolithic andAeneolithic burials, 52.

The pendants have drilled holes for fastening or, rarely, shallow grooves on the sides. Besides, along with numerous amber buttons (more than 100 pieces) and the above mentioned bear tooth pendant, five bone pendants were found in the grave no. 28. They were made of thin plates. Four plates, one of which is broken at the side of the hole, are narrow and elongated and have concave bases. They have no counterparts among the decorations from the other graves. The fifth plate is sub-rectangular and short and has a concave base.

16 of the 39 buried of the late Volosovo period, had no ornaments: six men, six women, two children, one teenager and one adult of unidentified gender (table 3).

The graves which contained no ornaments were located quite densely between the "shrines", some of them being severely damaged (fig. 2). We find it difficult to account for the absence of any ornaments in this group of the buried. Among these graves which contained no inventory there were two tier burials 36A-36B (male) and 37A-37B (female) where several ornaments were found. They might have belonged to the deceased in the lower tier (36B and 37B) which were buried earlier. Some of them might have been replaced when the burials of the upper tier were made.

23 burials including thirteen women (68 % of the total number of the female burials), seven men (54 % of the total number of the male burials), two teenagers and one adult of unidentified gender were accompanied with ornaments (table 3). It is noteworthy that, expressed both absolutely and relatively, the number of the female burials with the ornaments is greater than that of the male burials. It could be connected with the fact that women felt weaker in resisting the challenges of life and resorted to the help of various amulets more often than men did. The dominating kind of the ornaments both in male and in female graves were animal teeth pendants, of which bear teeth were most numerous (58 pieces). Most of them were found in the male grave no. 7B (20 pieces) and the teenager grave no. 63 (26 pieces). Same as in the early Volosovo burials, they were bear incisors. Teeth of other animals (elk, beaver, wolf, fox, dog) were used as pendants more seldom (table 1). Such disproportion in the species of the animals whose teeth were used as amulets is not casual. It was Volosovo culture that was characterized by the widely spread bear worship which

was expressed in various forms including flint figurines of bears rearing, placing bear

21

paws above the ritual hoards and putting bear mandibles into or next to the graves . Bear teeth pendants prevailed over the others in the Volosovo horizon of the cultural layer at the site. All the evidence suggests that it was a totemic cult.

The ornaments made of marmot incisors constitute a separate group. More than

22

40 pieces were found in the female grave no. 24 (fig. 4: 45). Apparently, the ornaments were fastened to the hem of a shirt by means of an adhesive substance the remains of which many of them contain. The marmot is found in the steppe and in the forest-steppe and the ornaments of marmot teeth were obviously foreign. Likewise, foreign were the 12 serpentine pendants from the same grave as most serpentine deposits occur in the foothills of the Southern Urals. Serpentine pendants were also found in some other late Volosovo female graves (7A, 13A, 19). Most likely, the presence of women wearing clothes decorated with marmot incisors and serpentine pendants was connected with the infiltration of a part of the population from the areas to the east of Sakhtysh (Middle Volga region, the foothills of the Urals) into the terri-

tory of the Volosovo culture in the Volga-Oka interfluve . Indeed, unlike serpentine pendants, the ornaments made of marmot incisors could not have been an article of importation.

Bone ornaments (21 pieces) were found in 9 graves (no. 13B, 23, 25, 36А, 37А, 57, 58, 62 and 63). Among them pendants are represented in series. Most of them

(seven pieces each) were found in the graves no. 13B and 63. In the graves no. 25, 37A, 57 and 62 they were single. The pendants vary in shape: sub-trapeziform, sub-triangular, sub-rectangular, sub-oval. They were made of thin bone plates, sometimes curved (in cross-section) because they were produced from split tubular bones. Some of the pendants from the graves no. 13B, 25, 63 have slightly or deeply concave base. It can be a chronological attribute: the pendants with concave base were present in the earlier "amber-bearing" grave no. 28. In addition to that, it is necessary to point out that the graves no. 13B and no. 25 were destroyed by the later burials no. 13A and 24 which contained such later type of ornaments as serpentine pendants. Bone pendants with concave bases were never accompanied with serpentine pendants. Thus, the burials with bone pendants with concave bases may occupy the chronological niche between the earlier burials with amber and the later burials with serpentine.

Besides pendants, the inventory of the ornaments included two single-piece articles: a lenticular in section ring 30 cm in diameter (grave no. 23) and a small planoconvex disk with a drill hole in the center (grave no. 36A).

The pendant in the form of anthropomorphous figurine (fig. 6: 2) made from a

24

thin plate (2 mm) is unique. It was found in the grave no. 58 near the neck .

24 D.A. Krainov, E.L. Kostyleva, and A.V. Utkin, "Voloso culture antropomorphous figurine from Sakhtysh IIA site", Russian archaeology, no. 3. (1994): 103-105.

We believe that the only one of its kind figurine found in the center of the Russian Plain was connected with the worship of male ancestor deity. Such figurines, both whole and in fragments, carved from antler or bone, are known to have been

25

found in Estonia (Tamula), Latvia (Abora-I) and Pskov Region of Russia (Usvyaty) . The image of the deity is canonical. It is a man standing upright with his legs set apart, arms stretched along the body at some distance from it, hands pressed against the hips, face more or less accomplished.

The sensational find discovered in the first Volosovo "shrine" in 1990 is connected with the worship of the male ancestor. It was a face mask skillfully carved from the whole elk antler base26. The full-sized mask looks realistic (fig. 6: 1). No similar masks are known but their existence in the Eastern Baltics cannot be denied. It is worthwhile to compare the Sakhtysh mask with the upper fragment of one of the Tamula figurines (fig. 6: 3). Judging by the fragment, the figurine was made in the

27

same style as the other images of the ancestor . Of particular interest is the design of the face which looks as if it was covered with a mask similar to that from the first "shrine" at the burial ground Sakhtysh-IIa, with high forehead and classic nose. The similarity can be seen particularly well if the Sakhtysh mask is scaled down to the size of the face of the Tamula figurine (fig. 6: 4). When describing the face of the figurine, L.Yu. Yanits noted that the eyebrows and the nose were outlined by the abrupt descent of the part of the face between them, which made an impression that

28

eyes could be found under the eyebrows . The Sakhtysh mask has the same vertical excision stretching from the forehead to the eyes and produces the effect of the "look form the depth." Two downward oblique lines stretching from under the nose can be seen on the face of the Tamula figurine. They can hardly be interpreted as the portrayal of a moustache. More likely, they represent the method of fastening the mask similar to that of the Sakhtysh mask. In addition to the orifices at the sides of the forehead section for fastening the string, the Sakhtysh mask has a plate with a threshold located under the nose. It was intended for holding the string which preventing the mask from slipping aside. The string was to go down under the ears and to be tied up at the back of the head. And there is one more noteworthy detail which relates the images from Sakhtysh and from Tamula. There is a drilled orifice in the forehead of

25 L.Yu. Yanits, "New data on the Neolithic in the Baltics", Sovetskaya arkheologiya, no. XIX (1954): 196, fig. 23; I.A. 28 Ibid, 196-197.

the Tamula figurine. None of the other figurines have anything like that. And the ori-

29

fice was hardly intended for suspension as L.Yu. Yanits believed . The figurines could be worn as amulets with the fastening (a strap or a string) arranged between the arms and the body. The orifice could have had a sacred meaning (like the third eye of the induist deity Shiva). At the moment of unearthing at the "shrine" the Sakhtysh mask had a pierced sub-triangle subcentral orifice in the forehead with two radiating cracks. It is impossible to say wether the mask was damaged when adminestering a rite or in an enemy atack or cracked in an attempt to drill an orifice similar to that of the Tamula figurine.

Therefore, the anthropomorphous bone figurine from the grave no. 58 and the antler face mask from the first "shrine" have counterparts hundreds of kilometers to the west of Sakhtysh in the late Neolithic cultures with porous ceramics, from which the "abmer-bearing" migrants arrived in the area of lake Sakhtysh.

Judging by radiocarbon dating of the coal from the bottom of the pit, the second "shrine" was constructed about 4240±160 BP (GIN-6787), which means that it dates back to the later period than the first "shrine". It did not contain any impressive artifacts except for the bone pendant in the form of a three-dimensional bird head. Such pendants in the form of the bird heads of various species composition were widely

30

spread at Sakhtysh sites and in the ritual hoards of the final stage of the culture .

Conclusion

Summing up the above, we can say that specific soil composition at the site Sakhtysh-IIa (peaty or sandy clay loam) provided preservation of the artifacts made of organic materials such as antler and bone which were absent from the settlements and burial grounds with different (usually sandy) soil composition.

Graves of the Lialovo culture are characterized by the poor burial inventory. Only four of the 15 graves with 17 skeletons contained burial inventory which was represented mostly by bone tools. It may be explained by the difficult life conditions of the people when all effort was aimed at survival. They had no free time for making special burial inventory and the things left behind by the dead were to serve the living. Besides, the lifespan of Lialovo people was very short: about one third of the buried were 1-5-year-old children and one third were adults of 20-25 years of age (six and six persons, accordingly). They did not live long enough to pile up things which were unnecessary and possessed only the essentials. The poverty of people resulted in the scarcity of burial inventory and this circumstance is unlikely to have been connected with religious norms.

A completely different situation can be seen in the Volosovo culture. Its representatives never put production tools into their graves, but ornaments of different

29 Ibid, 196.

kinds were found in more than half of both the early and the late Volosovo burials. Male graves which contained amber ornaments prevailed in the early Volosovo burials. Pendants made of animal teeth or bone were rare. The dominating type of the ornaments in the late Volosovo graves were teeth pendants, most of which were bear teeth. There is no doubt that it was related to the totemic worship of the ancestor bear, widely spread in the late Volosovo culture. It is possible that the search of the origins of the cult can lead us to the east. The bone anthropomorphous figurine found in the grave and antler face mask from the "shrine" are connected with the cult of the male ancestor. The analysis of the images makes it possible to discuss their western (chiefly eastern Baltic) counterparts.
