Stem cells in medicine

Saratov State Medical University n.a. V.I. Razumovsky Scientific supervisor: Parashchenko-Korneychuk L.N.

Stem cells and the discovery of their mechanism caused areal furore in practical an regenerative medicine. Stem cells(SC) are the fundamental constructive material of organisms, partaking in the regeneration processes. Every day about a billion cells are renewed in our body. New cells, the young generation, originating from SC replacing defective and out dated cells. SC niches are found practically in all tissuesand organs. Their quantity and quality decreases with aging. Specifically this fact underlies aging conception in modern medicine. SC could be grown in vitro taken from different sources (bone marrow, adipose tissue, skin, muscle). ESC isolate for membryos at an early stage of development. They differentiate into all cell types of organism and have very high proliferative potential. Depending on the culture conditions, embryonic stem cells may form clumps of cells that candifferentiate spontaneously to generate many cell types.

Embryonic stem cells could be used to make more specialized tissues that have been lost to disease and injury. For tissues that are constantly replaced, like blood and skin, stem cells would probably be replaced directly. Researchers are also exploring ways to use stem cells to treat diabetes, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, heart disease and vision and hearing loss, among others.

The efficacy of stem cell therapies depends on the introduced cells arriving where they are needed and either replacing or rejuvenating damaged cells. They should not contain undifferentiated embryonic stem cells, and either the cells, the patient or both should be treated so that the patient's immune system will not attack the transplants.
