Constructivism as a theory of knowledge and learning is the subject of numerous theoretical and empirical research in social scientific disciplines from different perspectives: from advocacy to refutation.

Exemplified by radical and social constructivism, this paper presentsthe different "faces" of constructivism, the epistemology of constructivism, the scopes and contradictions in its interpretations and pedagogical implications. Special attention is directed towards learning and teaching in light of constructivism and towards the concept of "constructivist pedagogy".

A continuing subject of my professional and scientific work is interaction in different institutional contexts of learning and teaching (from kindergartens to university). Research dealingwithadult(parentand preschoolteacher) -child interaction, teacher/professor- student interaction in higher education and interaction in preschool teacher1 education indicated the importance of a sociocultural positioning of learning, teaching. More specifically, they helped me conceptualize social interaction as a starting pointtowardsunderstandingthe relation between learning, teaching2 in "school" - institutional contexts of children's, learner's, student's, teacher's development, in terms of personal, social, professional growth. In other words, they helped me understand the relationship between

They both presuppose a processof being, becoming, i.e. construction and reconstruction, with the purpose of long-term developmental changes from the perspective of the "learner" and from the perspective of the "teacher". Both learning and teaching as constituent parts of social interaction between "learners" and "teachers" with different purposes (intrinsic and extrinsic).

continuity and discontinuity in social mediation of individual development. Put in "competency" vocabulary, individual development in the sense of relative qualification and training for successful behaviour in different actual and potential settings.

In my elaboration of the theoretical frame for empirical research, and also for the interpretation of empirical data, I used and I am using the sociocultural theory or approach to learning, teaching and development whose starting point is Vygotsky's and followers' cultural-historical theory. A continuous insight into literature about the sociocultural nature (embeddedness) of learning and teaching warned me about the numerous, often contradictory interpretations of learning, teaching for which it was and it is claimed that they stem from Vygotsky's3 cultural-historical theory. Constructivism of different variations as a contemporary and "fruitful" approach, theory of learning and teaching dominates in pedagogical and psychological literature. Controversial interpretations of what constructivist learning and teaching is, especially in competency and life-long educational policy and practices, were a challenge that determined the selection and elaboration of this topic.

The epistemology of constructivism

Many discussions about constructivism in the last 20 years deal with interpreting the nature of constructivism as an epistemological approach or theory of knowledge, cognition and constructivism in education. Constructivism, as a viable relativistic epistemological paradigm4, is an

For example, social constructivism is claimed to be Vygotsky's, however Liu and Matthews (2005) consider this to be incorrect and inconsistent: on the one hand, due to the dualistic approach in popular accounts and critiques of constructivism, and on the other hand due to the lack of appreciation of Vygotsky»s general philosophical orientation and way of understanding the fundamental concepts of the cultural-historical theory.

Viable, as a replacement of the traditional objectivistic, realistic epistemological paradigm. Viable in the postmodernist discourse about the dynamic diversity of life, about the changeable nature of truth. Willson (1997) claims that many constructivist beliefs about cognition are rooted in the postmodern philosophy. For example, accentuating the contextual construction of thinking and the validity of multiple perspectives in postmodernist philosophy corresponds to the constructivist understanding about the reality of thinking, about the dynamic nature of knowledge, about learning as a natural consequence of "performance", about reflection/abstraction as critical fora "professional" performance, about the connectedness of thinking and perception.

alternative to the traditional objectivistic, realistic epistemological paradigm. Matthews (1992), considering constructivism from an ontological and epistemological point of view, cites several constructivist extracts in which there is a visible interpretation of constructivism as "a theory about the limits of human knowledge, a belief that all knowledge is necessarily a product of our own cognitive acts" (Matthews, 1992,304)5. According to Matthews (1992), direct knowledge about any external or objective reality is not possible.

Knowledge is constructed through our experiences and the characters of those experiences are very much influenced by our cognitive lenses. Unlike objectivists, constructivists (especially radical constructivists) dismiss the possibility of the existence of a "positive ontology as a source of knowledge" (Cokolov, 2001, 39). Knowledge as a result of the process of cognition is a construction of reality, and not a representation of an external reality, i. e. its revelation (Giasersfeld, 1989, 2001a). Knowledge is considered as a repertoire of concepts, conceptual relations and actions or operations that have been proven viable in relation to biological and conceptual aims. At the biological level, it concerns a kind of adaptedness as an ability of "organisms or species that is characterized by their ability to survive" in relation to the conditions and limitations of their environments (Giasersfeld, 1991, 3). At the conceptual level, viability refers to "the experiential appropriateness and compatibility of cognitive conceptual structures of an organism". This corresponds with the philosophical notion of a "coherent theory of truth" (Giasersfeld, 1991,4) and this view of knowledge is instrumental.

Giasersfeld (1991) warns about the impossibility of understanding constructivism as "a description of ontological reality, because it negates the possibility of ontologically «true»

5 Matthews, as a critic of constructivism, focused on uncovering the "fundamental, and fatal, epistemological error in the doctrine", assuming that was the way towards rescuing the "good constructivist pedagogy from the deficient theory" (Matthews, 1992, 303). In short, his critique is that: "constructivism maintains the widespread, commonsensical, subject-centred, Aristotelian-empiricist epistemological paradigm, and by correctly pointing to a major error in empiricist assumptions, it then swings to a relativist epistemology without abandoning the paradigm itself". (Matthews, 1992, 303).

knowledge". Unlike the conceptualization of "truthfulness", i. e. "truth" in the traditional sense, Glasersfeld (1991) proposes the consideration of truth as "working hypotheses, which can and cannot be useful" (Glasersfeld, 1991, 4). Dealing with implications of constructivism in the design of teaching, Duffy and Cunningham (1996) take as their starting point the contemporary constructivist theories characterised by the influence of the 20th century philosophers. Under the influence of Kuhn, Wittgenstein and Rorty, a new epistemological base of contemporary constructivist views i. e. variations of constructivism was created. Their claim about knowledge as a construction of the individual, about the relativity of knowledge in relation to the "actual context", negate the conceptualization of knowledge as a representation of correspondence with external reality (Duffy, Cunnigham, 1996)6.

The common base of the variations of constructivism is visible in Glasersfeld claim that: "Instead of presupposing that knowledge has to be a "representation" of what exists, they posit knowledge as a mapping of what, in light of human experience, turns out to be feasible" (Glasersfeld, 1989, 134). Also in the claim that: "knowledge is the result of the subject's individual activity of construction, and not a product that is outside the subject (knower) and that can be transferred or installed via perception or linguistic communication" (Glasersfeld, 1990, 37).

Duffy and Jonassen (1992) indicate the similarities and differences between constructivism and objectivism. Both of them take as their starting pointthe existence of a reality that is perceived, i. e. cognized by a human being. The differences are interpretations of the cognition of the reality. Unlike objectivism, constructivism

According to Duffy, Cunningham (1996), Kuhn advocated this view of knowledge especially in the consideration of theory and research in science, more specifically in considering the relation between facts and theory. Facts are burdened by theory, i. e. determined by a theoretical understanding. Theory influences the researcher's "determining" of facts (Kuhn, 1999). It is claimed that Wittgenstein also has a similar standing point related to language research: definitions of words and thought. The influence of Rorty - his pragmatic theory, according to which knowledge is not exactly knowledge, but a construction of actions so as to face reality, is attributed to constructivists who deal with cognitive development of the individual in society.

(Duffy, Cunnigham, 1996)6.

leaves the traditional position of realism, according to which cognition is a representation of reality and accepts the relativistic position about cognition, i. e. knowledge as an active individual construction with which reality is actualized (Duffy, Jonassen, 1992; Kanselaar,

2002)7. Matthews (1992) differentiates relativism understood in this way from relativism in which the aim of science is to seek the truth about the world. According to the constructivist viewpoint, what is questionable is the "iconicity"8 and stasis of knowledge, and not its possibility. The hypothetical and processual nature of knowledge is opposite to the objectivistic understanding of knowledge as an interiorized representation of reality characterized by finality (in the sense of indisputability, truthfulness).

While considering the basic tenets of radical constructivism, Kenzin (2004) warns about their embeddedness in research of the biological, neurophysiological and psychological process of construction making, operated by human cognition. Furthermore, he warns about the basic philosophical theses of radical constructivism: "cognition is an active process of constructing the subject»s agency"; (...) "knowledge has an adaptive meaning and is oriented towards adaptation (adjustment) and survival; (...) knowledge serves the organization of the subject's internal world, and does not serve the tasks of describing the objective ontological reality; (...) scientific cognition should ultimately serve practical goals" (Kenzin, 2004, 12-13).

* Kanselaar (2002) determined constructivism as a "loosely coupled system" of beliefs consisted of: a set of epistemological beliefs about the nature of reality, a set of psychological beliefs about learning and cognition and a set of educational beliefs (beliefs about pedagogy: about "the best way" to support learning). The "loose coupled-ness" refers to the interrelations between educational, epistemological or psychological beliefs. For example, someone can teach traditionally, and at the same time believe that the most important thing for learning is the individual construction of meaning, i. e. knowledge. In interpreting the epistemology of constructivism he starts from radical constructivism - determining knowledge: "knowledge is something which is personally constructed by individuals in an active way, as they try to give meaning to socially accepted and shared notions" (Kansellar, 2002, 2).

8 It was Glasersfeld (2001b) who, in his explanation of the radicalism of constructivism, states that the radicalism is visible in the view of the relationship between knowledge and reality. While in the traditional theory of cognition and cognitive psychology this relation is mostly discussed according to the criterion of iconic harmony, radical constructivism gives it the meaning of adaptation ("Anpassung") in a functional sense.

In literature about constructivism there are many discussions about the "faces" of constructivism as specific approaches within constructivist epistemology9. Discussions mostly concern personal, radical and social constructivism10. For a more comprehensive, thorough understanding of constructivism, I consider the interpretation of the nature of cognition, knowledge to be important. To this end,

I have selected radical and social constructivism as the most influential constructivist approaches -"faces" of constructivism11.

According to radical (personal or cognitive) constructivism (Liu, Matthews, 2005), cognition and knowledge have a personal nature - they are constructs of the individual. Advocators of radical constructivism consider "intrapersonal processes of individual knowledge construction" to be relevant (Liu, Matthews, 2005, 387), and in educational12 practice this means focus on the student and on discovering. Knowledge

9 Because of its non-uniform theoretical position, it is possible to view constructivism on an epistemological continuum. Cognitive and radical constructivism present opposite extremes, and social constructivism takes the "middle" position - between transmission of the knowable reality and construction of personal and coherent reality. Derry (1992) emphasizes that constructivism has appropriated different epistemological theories and that important discussions are held about the types of constructivism, their truthfulness, regularity, viability etc. Other authors (Babic, Irovic, 2001; Babic, Irovic, 2005; Dougiamas, 1998; Ernest, 1995,1999; Karagiorgi, Symeou, 2005; Smith, 1999) emphasize the existence of different variants, versions of constructivism in the sense of "loosely" defined viewpoints that are strongly influenced by individual authors.

I presume that questioning and redefining their theoretical and empirical relevance is important. t0 In psychological and pedagogical literature, sociocultural constructivism is used as synonymous with social constructivism. Sociocultural constructivism is taken over from L.S. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of development. In contemporary discussions of Russian and American psychologists the synonymous meaning of the aforementioned notions and ascription of social constructivism to L.S. Vygotsky is being disputed. The reasons for this are different philosophies and epistemologies of Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of development and social constructivism.

11 Rowlands, Carson (2001) interpret the difference between radical and social constructivism in the ways they define knowledge. If knowledge is defined "in terms of mental representations" than we are talking about radical constructivism, and if knowledge is defined "in terms of consensus" that we are talking about social constructivism. The question remains concerning the definition of knowledge as both mental representations as consensus, i. e. as personal and as social. In that case, we are talking about a possible solution of the contradiction between the radical constructivist interpretation of the personal and social, i. e. the contradiction "between the individual constructor of meaning and the social" (Rowlands, Carson, 2001, 2).

u The term and notion education is used as an umbrella term in the sense of learning and teaching (nature, process and performance).

(Rowlands, Carson, 2001,2).

in

as a mental construct is considered outside of the influence of a sociocultural context. Social environment and interactions are "merely (...) stimulus for individual cognitive conflict" (Liu, Matthews, 2005, 387-388).

Conversely, social constructivism situates cognition, knowledge in a social and cultural context (Duffy, Cunningham, 1996; Cole, Engestrom, 1993; Cole, Wertsch, 1996; Wertsch, 1991,1994). A social constructivist interpretation of knowledge is based on an assumption about the construction of knowledge through interaction of individuals with the community, or the sociocultural environment. Consensus of different interpretations is realized through interaction, i. e. group mediation.

In social sciences, social constructivism can be defined as an epistemological principle and approach based on Berger and Luckman»s (1992) sociological theory of knowledge. In accordance with that principle, knowledge is socially constructed in communicationa! practice. Communication is, according to social constructionism (Richardson, 2003) a social constructing of reality (and not a cognitive epistemological process, as constructivists claim). Therefore, social constructivism is opposed to epistemological position of redefining psychological constructs such as "thinking", "the self" and emotions as socially constructed processes. From this perspective "knowledge is not something people possess in their heads, but something people do together" (Gergen, 1985, 270).

Despite the differences and contradictions in interpretations of constructivism, the understanding of constructivism as an epistemological approach to cognition and knowledge is viable. Constructivism emphasizes the constructive nature of cognition and knowledge, the relativity of cognition and knowledge, the processuality of knowledge, the value background of cognition and knowledge and the functionality of knowledge.

Although there are variations in the constructivist epistemology, the common thread is relativism and the fact that they are experience-based and subject-oriented.

(Liu, Matthews, 2005, 387-388).

Learning and teaching in light of constructivism

The 1980s and 1990s have been marked by a cultural turn in constructivism. It is a time of change towards social and cultural perspectives, reformulations of constructivist thought within the discourse of humanistic and social sciences. When constructivism is considered within education, there is a visible shift in viewing education as a culturally constructed reality of different perspectives and interpretations. Constructivism in education is underconsideration as a "promising"13 theory of learning and teaching, as an approach to redefining curriculum, creating a learning and teaching environment and as a "promising" approach in teacher education, i. e. as "a set of educational beliefs about (...) the best way to support learning" in formal and informal educational contexts (Kanselaar, 2002,1).

Constructivism in pedagogy implies an epistemological and educational theory. These two aspects can be separated and exist independently. Advocating constructivist theory of science can, simultaneously, signify the negation of constructivist pedagogy and vice versa. Although constructivism first appears as a theory of learning, it progressively expands to other areas and thus "becomes" a theory of teaching and a theory of education, i. e. "a pedagogical theory"14.

In order to understand the "pedagogy of constructivism" I consider it is important to gain insight into constructivist interpretations of learning and teaching, i. e. constructivist perspectives of learning and teaching which can, but must not be, in line with the epistemology of constructivism or the constructivist theory of cognition, knowledge, science15. However,

"Promising" as an answer to the objectivist epistemology of behaviourism in theories and practices of learning and teaching. The critics of constructivism warn against the problem of viewing constructivism in education as a "unique theory" (Matthews,

1999), that, with its uniqueness and dominance leads towards "one solution for all" - "one size fits all" (Pratt, 2002, 2006) and therefore gains the meaning of an orthodox ideology.

Or, the sociocultural and constructivist perspectives about learning are not complementary because they presuppose "different, and incommensurate, ontological assumptions" (Packer, Goicoechea, 2000, 239). Packer and Goicoechea (2009) introduce a distinction between "epistemological and ontological aspects of human change and transformation, the process called learning by socioculturalists. Whether one attaches the label "learning" to the part or to the whole, acquiring knowledge and expertise always entails participation in relationship and in community and transformation both of the person and of the social world". (Packer, Goicoechea, 2000, 239).

it is important to know the perspective of the researcher because it mirrors the value background ofthe view of a selected approach, theory, practice. It is not always possible to discern reliably the perspectives of the researcher, especially in case of a seemingly neutral position of the researcher, in case of a controversial position of the researcher (simultaneously advocating and refuting) and in case of a "loose" compromising position of the researcher. My perspective of dealing with constructivism (theory and practice of learning and teaching) has a starting point in Vygotsky»s and followers» historical-cultural theory of development, which is often uncritically associated with social constructivism and constructionism. Social constructivism only in the part that is concerned with the interactional nature of learning and teaching and intersubjectivity, with which I am dealing with in the rest ofthe paper.

In the following sections I am presenting the interpretations of learning and teaching within radical and social constructivism (i. e. constructionism). Their selection is determined by their most powerful influence on the pedagogy of learning and teaching. Rowlands, Carson (2001), in dealing with contradictions in the constructivist discourse, start from the claim that constructivism is the most influential "theory" of learning in education. They conceptualize "theory" more as a system of beliefs, than as a structured frame of ideas or concepts that can determine the approach to education. Kanselaar (2002) advocates a similar standpoint about constructivism as a "set" of educational beliefs from the perspective of social constructivism.

Radical constructivists interpret learning as a process of constructing "meaningful representations, i. e. meaning making about the experiential world. It is a process of selfregulation and construction of conceptual structures via reflection and abstraction"

(Packer, Goicoechea, 2000,239).

(Glasersfeld, 1995, 2001a)16. Meaning is the result of understanding relations, reflection about actions and construction and modelling explanations (Fosnot, 2005). Emphasizing processuality of learning means highlighting the importance of the path, way in searching the answer, and not the revelation of an "objectively true solution". In learning and teaching students» "errors" are seen in a positive light because they enable an insight into the organization of their experiential world. The perspective is consistent with a constructivist tendency of giving an advantage to multiple truths, representations, views and realities.

Adaptability, in the sense of appropriateness and viability in relation to internal and external limitations is ascribed to learning and knowledge. Adaptability and developmentability of learning are often used in constructivist pedagogy. Difficulties arise when we attempt to "objectify" them in programmes of learning and teaching. In the same vein, Pratt (2066) for example, in his elaboration of perspectives of teaching, places the "constructivist orientation" into the developmental perspective, according to which "the basic goal of education (...) is developing more and more complex and sophisticated modes of thinking and problem-solving within the contents or work areas" (Pratt, 2006, 32). The necessity of changing "the mode of thinking" when a "new experience or new contents do not match the student's actual knowledge" fit into

In explaining the construction of concepts, Glasersfeld (2001a) emphasizes that the "creation of concepts is a type of construc tion" and that "construction involves reflection". Reflection means to be aware "of connections that it is possible to make by coordinating sensory elements or mental operations." (Glasersfeld, 2001a, 165). Furthermore, in order to understand the influence of constructivism on educational practice, Glasersfeld (1989) thinks it is necessary to make a distinction between "utilitarian and epistemic instrumentality", in order for it to be possible to explain the difference between training and teaching. He sees the values of the aforementioned diversification in helping to "separate the acquiring of skills - models of behaviour from active construction of viable understanding" (Glasersfeld, 1989,134) and in designing of the curriculum of greater intrinsic coherence. (...) He claims, "learning and knowledge are instrumental in establishing and maintaining the cognizing subject's equilibrium, they are adaptive. Adaptedness, from the constructivist point of view, must be understood as the condition of fit or viability within external and internal constraints. (...) constructivist teachers would tend to explore how students see the problem and why their path towards a solution seemed promising to them. This in turn makes it possible to build up a hypothetical model of the student's conceptual network and to adapt instructional activity so that it provides occasions for accommodations that are actually within the student's reach" (Glasersfeld, 1989,135).

adaptability and deveiopmentability (Ibidem, 32). However, change, understood in this way, is in contrast with the constructivist understanding of adaptability and deveiopmentability due to external explicitness - when it is claimed that in the above mentioned discrepancy the student "has to either change his/her old way of cognition or dismiss the new knowledge or experience" and that the primary goal is to "change the student's mode of thinking, and not to increase his/her stock of knowledge" (Pratt, 2002, 2006, 32).

Researchers in natural-scientific education have a specific interpretation of the construction of conceptual structures and conceptual changes. Relying on a constructivist understanding about the construction of conceptual structures, they describe learning as a process of conceptual changes: transformation of "naive" (intuitive) conceptions into scientific or more scientific conceptions. Stated more broadly, learning is a "process of enrichment, organisation, reorganisation and refinement of knowledge, and (...) development of the ability to use scientific concepts and ways of thinking when appropriate". (Van Boxtel, Van der Linden, Kanselaar, 2000,312).

Vosniadou and Verschaffel (2004) differentiate learning in the sense of conceptual changes from learning in the sense of "addition" and enrichment of existing knowledge. In cases of conflict between new information and previous knowledge a necessity of reorganizing previous knowledge occurs, i. e. a necessity of a conceptual change. The main reason for non- acceptance of "additive mechanisms" in realizing conceptual changes is that they can be one of the significant reasons of "misunderstandings". This view of learning as a process of conceptual change is also not unique. Vosniado, Verschaffel (2004) warn about the existence and view of conceptual change from the viewpoint of multiple perspectives. They see the value of the conceptual change approach in its potentials regarding enriching the social constructivist perspective17.

17 Exemplified by mathematics education, they state the benefits, i. e. values of applying the conceptual change approach. These are: guidance in identifying concepts in order to find causes of learners' biggest difficulties, predicting and explaining system errors and misunderstandings, ensuring centred explanations of intuitive mathematical concepts, preparing learners for finding connecting analogies, developing metacognitive skills etc. (Vosniado, Verschaffel, 2004).

(Van Boxtel, Van der Linden, Kanselaar, 2000, 312).

The stated diversities in constructivist epistemology are also present in "constructivist pedagogy". Duffy and Cunningham (1996) start from the claim about diversities and determine their connection using the general view about learning as an active process of knowledge construction, and teaching a "process of support" of the construction of knowledge. At the same time they point to the constructivist view of learning as an "activity" in context. More specifically, the view of learning as a holistic process of construction and reconstruction of knowledge.

Numerous discussions amongst constructivists about learning and teaching deal with "truth" and "viability" ("truthfulness" expressed via mutual thought, and "viability" expressed via necessary understanding). Constructivists advocate understanding various perspectives and "provocation of students» thinking" without the necessity of mutual thinking. I consider the "truthfulness" expressed in the notion "mutual thinking" in learning and teaching in terms of compulsory consensus realizable through positions of authority. "Mutual thinking" in the "classroom" would thus mean accepting the truth of the authority - the teacher, and this needs to be differentiated from understanding in terms of accomplishing a mutual minimal point of intersubjectivity- minimal point of understanding of different perspectives (points of view), with the purpose of continuity in the mutual field of activity- accomplishing mutual intentions (goals), problem-solving, planning, evaluating. Continuity in the sense of coordination of different points of view through which a social-cognitive problem, conflict is resolved. "Mutual thinking" can be thought of as a "pedagogical agreement" (under the influence of the Geneva school) according to which students are socially and cognitively responsible in the construction of their own knowledge. The basic task of a pedagogical agreement is coming to a "communicational agreement" amongst students of different positions and cognitive capabilities (And what about the teacher?). This view of "truthfulness" and "understanding" is the subject of my (and my associates») theoretical

and empirical research in the context of learning and teaching. For example, research dealing with communicational organization of dialogical learning and teaching found that the level of resemblance in the partner's relevant points of view determines mutual understanding and action coordination (Babic, Kuzma, 1995, 2000; Babic, 2009). Seen form a pedagogical point of view, participants» roles and communication and interaction organization of learning and teaching have an important place in formalized institutional contexts (such as the "classroom" environment) (Babic, Kuzma, 1995; Babic, 1997; Babic, 2009).

The "cultural turn" in constructivism signified a shift of attention towards the cultural embeddedness of learning, i. e. its social nature, towards learning and cognition being distributed in the environment (Duffy, Cunningham, 1996) and towards questioning radical constructivism. Emphasizing the individual aspect of learning and neglecting the social aspect (Ernest, 1999), is the basic stricture of radical constructivism. What constitutes social aspects of learning and how to "reconcile" the individual and the social in learning and teaching? These are the questions both radical and social constructivists, i, e. constructionists deal with.

One of the dominant theoretical perspectives about learning is the sociocultural perspective. Central to this perspective are social interaction and language as the most important tools of communication and learning. John-Steiner, Mahn (1996) claim that sociocultural theorists have, using the concept of "the zone of proximal development" (ZPD)18 conceptualized learning

18 In English "the zone of proximal development (ZPD)" is a concept taken from Vygotsky's theory, it is a notion first introduced by Vygotsky in order to explain the connection between "обучения" (teaching) and psychical development. ZPD as the difference between the actual level, determined by independent problemsolving and potential (succeeding, future) level of development, determined by problem-solving in cooperation with an adult or another child (Vygotsky, 1982, 247). Vygotsky sees the importance of the zone of succeeding, i. e. proximal development in the «dynamics of intellectual development and successfulness of teaching» (Vygotsky, 1982, 247).

"The ZPD notion can be analyzed further in either ontogenetic or microgenetic scope. For its originator - Lev Vygotsky - that zone concept was linking the person's ontogenetic present with the future-under-construction. The developing person constantly acts above his or her actual - already mastered - developmental competencies and through such constant probing into the domains of incompetencies -expands the competencies» (Valsiner, 2005,203).

as distributed, interactive, contextual and as a result of student»s participation in a "community of practice". What they have in common are participation, cooperativeness and joint discovery of meanings in the function of the construction of knowledge and expertise. The social nature of learning, teaching confirms the importance of social interaction in which the individual - the student constructs his/her reality in reciprocal relations with others, the important people in his/her life (parent, teacher, peer, non-peer, group and so on). The significant others mediate sociocultural experience, i. e. values in the sense of priorities (acceptable - valuable and desirable, depending on the nature of the cultural scenario).

With the increase of interest for Vygotsky»s historical cultural theory and studies of the role of social interaction in Piaget's work, the understandings about the relationship of the individual and the social in learning are changing. The individual dimension of learning is observed in reciprocal relations within social environment. Learning is approached as a constructional, social and culturally situated process (Salomon, Perkins, 1998; Vosniadou, Ioannides, Dimitrakopoulou, Papademetriou, 2001). In other words, from a sociocultural perspective, learning is described as a process of transformation through participation in sociocultural activities (Robbins, 2006; Rogoff,

2003)19. it is obvious that, from a sociocultural perspective, learning and development occur in the process of changing participation in changing cultural communities through active contribution

Tudge (1990) in his explanation of "the zone of proximal development" points to the necessity of considering it within a broader theoretical frame. Specifically, it is not possible to understand the ZPD outside of the context of social interaction, which is crucially important in Vygotsky»s theory.

Eun (2010) indicates the problems of translating and interpreting the key notions of Vygotsky's theory. Specifically, she emphasizes the problems in translating «the crucial concept of obuchenie», which is most often translated to English as «instruction» or «teaching and learning» (Eun, 2010, 401). However, the stated translation does not capture the «dialectical dynamic relationship» between learning and teaching, which is inherent to the concept of obuchenie, according to Eun (2010). The complexity of the stated concept is visible from its "complicated dynamic interrelationships with development" (Eun, 2010,402).

Vygotsky's zone of proximal development (ZPD) or зона ближайшего развития (ЗБР) served Wood, Brunerand Ross (1976) in their conceptualization and research of "scaffolding" in learning and teaching.

15 The background of this is the view of the development of people "as participants in cultural communities. Their development can be understood only in light of the cultural practices and circumstances of their communities-which also change" (Rogoff, 2003, 3-4).

of individuals, their social partners, practices and traditions, cultural tools, technologies, materials and value systems (Rogoff, 2003). Individuals and their social partners, as the activities they are involved in, continuously transform and develop in mutually integrated ways (John-Steiner, Mahn, 1996).

Considering the question concerning the relationship between individual and social learning, Salomon and Perkins (1998) warn about their positions being on a continuum, about the profits of individual and social learning and about the reciprocally spiral relation. Applied to teaching design, "good", i. e. efficient learning is learning that implies multiple learning systems that are mutually related, that function in "spiral reciprocity". Furthermore, the quality of individual or collective learning also depends on "self-mediation" or mediation of other factors, i. e. intentional, conceptually focused, and not practical and automatized learning. Quality is also characterised: learning how to learn, which includes learning from others and with others, learning how to use different cultural artefacts.

I do not intend to praise the potentials of social learning, i. e. the potentials of the social cultural theory of learning, but to emphasize the often neglected of simplified interpretation of the social nature of learning and interrelatedness of individual and social aspects

Different variations of constructivism are related to a common view of learning as an active process of constructing knowledge and viewing teaching (instruction) as a process of appropriate support of learning (Duffy, Cunnigham, 1996).

Both radical and social constructivists (and constructionists) advocate appropriate support of learning.

And what is appropriate support of learning form a constructivist perspective? If students construct meanings through their experiences, then meaningful learning from an authentic context is important in order to enable monitoring of personal goals of learning. Radical constructivists give priority to creating an environment for learning in which "authentic learning contexts" are provided, and social constructivists give priority to mediation which

2006; Rogoff, 2003)19.

is accomplished through active participation in which the student transforms his/her understanding and ways of problem-solving. Active participation presupposes intensive interactions, personalized contingent guidance, prompt feedback, approval, explanation, suggestions, reflections (Wood, 1995; Salomon, Perkins, 1998, Babic, 2007). This kind of active participation is considered in the context of scaffolding - a specific way of guiding in "the zone of proximal development" (Wood, Bruner, Ross, 1976; Wood, 1995; Stone, 1993, 1998a; Wells, Claxton, 2002; Van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen, 2010). In pedagogy, i. e. education scaffolding is approached from the perspective of successful learning with different purposes: from realizing curriculum goals to developmental accomplishment in cognitive and non-cognitive areas.

Scaffolding in learning and teaching

Scaffolding - a "ferry" as a metaphor in the sense of adult, teacher support in mutual activities, the purpose of which is student's successfulness, in terms of expertise, professionalism. In other words, scaffolding as an "instructional process in which a teacher supports students cognitively, motivationally, and emotionally in learning" (Meyer, Turner, 2002, 18). Through their communicative exchanges, teachers and students build mutual understanding, i. e. intersubjectivity20.

"Scaffolding highlights one of the key

From the perspective of the "community of learners", which is rooted in the social cultural approach to learning and development, the collaborative responsibility of learners and teachers in guidance of learning is central: the responsibility of learners is in learning to manage their own learning, and the responsibility of the teacher is in guiding learners in their learning endeavours. In order to understand learning and teaching, Matusov (2001) thinks intersubjectivity is relevant, which he defines as "having something in common, as coordination of participants" contributions and human agency" (Matusov, 2001, 384). This is the mutual understanding between an individual whose interaction is based on mutual interests and assumptions, which is the basis of their communication (Rogoff, 1990).

The basic characteristic of intersubjectivity is a minimal level of understanding between the participants of learning, teaching. Intersubjectivity as a process means a construction of a mutual understanding through insight, negotiation and coordination of the participants' starting perspectives about the mutual task, problem in a concrete situational context.

Critically examining mutual understanding, Gillespie, Cornish (2009, 19) suggest "an inclusive definition" of intersubjectivity, which includes a "variety of relations between perspectives".

(Duffy, Cunnigham, 1996).

aspects of children's learning, namely that it is often «guided by others»" (Stone, 1998a, 351). In the elaboration and research of scaffolding the references to Vygotsky»s social cultural, i. e. cultural historical theory are the most common. According to Stone (1993); Davis and Miyake (2004) the scaffolding metaphor was first used by Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976)21 in order to explain the role of adults in activities of mutual (common) task-solving with children. The stated metaphor is used in learning in the sense of temporary support of the student in solving tasks he/she cannot independently solve (which corresponds learning, teaching within the frames of the zone of proximal development (ZPD)). According to Stone (1993), the student as an active participant in an interpersonal process builds a mutual understanding together with the teacher, i. e. they build an intersubjectivity via communicational exchanges in which the student learns from the perspectives of the participants who are of a higher level of achievement. It is presupposed that scaffolding will be efficient as a "dynamic intervention" if it is attuned to the student's progression and characteristics of the situation of learning (type of task, student»s answers) (van de Pol, Volman, Beushuizen, 2010, 272).

Stone (1993), in his view of the scaffolding metaphor (from considering what is missing to extended scaffolding) concludes that in considerations about scaffolding there has been a great departure from its initial picture. In the early discussions, scaffolding was described as the process of "assisting the child in identifying, sequencing, and practicing subgoalsfor eventual guided assembly" (Stone, 1993, 180). In other words, scaffolding was considered as a "subtle phenomenon, one that involves a complex set of social and semiotic dynamics", i. e. as a „fluid

21 At the same time its origin is forgotten - Vygotsky's historical-cultural theory, his interpretation of the "social situation of development" and "the zone of proximal development" (Wood, Bruner, Ross, 1976), although Wood (1995) in his study about how children think and learn, also considers the question of efficient teaching from the perspective of Bruner, Vygotsky and information theory. Stone (1998b) claims that the metaphor of scaffolding is in contemporary discourses often connected with Vygotsky's and Luria's theories, who have not used the term scaffolding. Their papers were one of the main incentives for a metaphor of scaffolding to emerge.

interpersonal process in which the participants» communicative exchanges serve to build a continually evolving mutual perspective on how to conceive the situation at hand" (Stone, 1993, 180). Two aspects of scaffolding were especially emphasized in these discussions: semiotic devices (implicature and prolepsis), which serve to encourage the interlocutor to construct and share the speaker»s perspective and to mediate the influence of interpersonal relations and social symbolic vales which is ascribed to situations and behaviours in the process of meaning making (Stone, 1993). Both aspects are crucial for understanding scaffolding and Stone

(1993) thinks they can be fruitful in theoretical considerations and as starting points of empirical research.

While strategies of scaffolding are only a part of a cyclical process of appropriate help, the focus of numerous authors is more often on the strategies of support without the widely accepted frame for strategy analyses. As a starting point for the construction, i. e. conceptualization of the frame and scaffolding strategies analyses, Van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen (2010) started from Tharp and Gallimore (1988) and Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976). Tharp and Gallimore (1988) name six ways of assistance: modelling, contingency management, feedback, instructing, questioning and cognitive structuring. Wood, Bruner and Ross (1976) name six functions of scaffolding: recruitment, reduction in degrees of freedom, direction maintenance, marking critical features, frustration control and demonstration. In order to conceptualize the theoretical frame, Van de Pol, Volman, Beshuizen (2010) think it is relevant to differentiate between purposes and means of scaffolding. The elaboration of the concrete forms of scaffolding presupposes determination of what scaffolding is and what it does-what its purposes are. Authors differentiate between six different purposes of scaffolding in metacognitive and cognitive activities and in the affective area (direction maintenance, cognitive structuring, reduction of degrees of freedom, recruitment and contingency management/ frustration control) and six means or ways

of support (feeding back, hints, instructing, explaining, modelling and questioning).

The features of successful guidance,

i. e. scaffolding teaching are: adaptability to the current or somewhat higher level of the student»s performance and transfer of responsibility. Responsibility includes student»s cognitive, metacognitive activities and his/ her affects. The transfer of responsibility is accomplished when a student is taking more and more control over his/her own learning. If, for example, a student is working on a set of tasks and the teacher is adapting his/her support to the student»s understanding, he is acting contingently. If a student achieves understanding, the teacher can decrease his/ her support over time. During the decrease of support, the teacher can "transfer" the responsibility onto the student, who will thus take more and more control over his/her own learning (Van de Pol, Volman, 2010, 275).

It is possible to achieve scaffolding in interaction, which possesses three basic characteristics: congruency, support fading and transfer of responsibility. Specifically, if a teacher applies strategies of scaffolding (modelling and questioning) which are contingent (based on the student's answers), than his/her support "must" in time fade as a result of increased responsibility of the student for the tasks (Van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen, 2010). Within other specific conceptualizations of scaffolding are the ones that emphasize the interaction dimension of scaffolding (Stone, 1998a), i. e. see scaffolding as interaction in which students and teachers achieve mutual trust, i. e. intersubjectivity, or it can be said that they share meanings, thoughts. Stone (1998a) identified four key features of scaffolding: first, the adult is taking responsibility for supporting children's inclusion into "meaningful and culturally desirable activities beyond the child's current understanding or control" (Stone, 1998a, 349). The second feature is adult involvedness in the process of careful, online diagnosis of the current level of understanding or expertise and ensuring appropriate support. Third, providing different types of support; and

(Van de Pol, Volman, 2010, 275).

(Van de Pol, Volman,

fourth temporariness and support that were gradually withdrawn. Put differently, what the "tutor" - the "teacher" excels or errs is the ability to "generate hypotheses about the student»s hypotheses and often to converge on the student»s interpretation" (Wood, Bruner, Ross, 1976, 97), in which the importance of his/ her theory about the student for the transaction nature of "tutoring" is visible. This is where the pattern of efficient teaching (instruction) derives from, and it depends on the task and the "student". The demands of the tutorial are created via interaction of "tutor's" ("teacher's") theories22.

Van de Pol, Volman (2010) in their review of scaffolding research in the classroom, especially its conceptualization, form and effects, point to the problem of a too broad interpretation and application of the concept of scaffolding in research, naming the authors who see scaffolding as a synonym for "support", "guidance by others".

Insight into recent literature indicated that scaffolding, as a concept in educational and psychological research, is applied too broadly so that it has become unclear (Van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen, 2010). Stone (1998a, 1998b) states that the metaphor of scaffolding was „drawn out" of its original theoretical context, which led to a consideration of scaffolding as a directive, instructional strategy initiated by the teacher, which is the opposite of its more responsive theoretical context (socio-historical theory).

Conclusion

In spite of the differences and contradictions in its interpretations, I consider the understanding of constructivism as an epistemologicai approach to cognition and

Specifically, the roles/functions of the «tutor»- the teacher in scaffolding are: recruitment, in terms of getting the tutee's interest and helping them adhere to the requirements of the task; reduction of the degrees of freedom, in terms of simplifying a task by reducing the number of component actions that are necessary in order to get to the solution; direction maintenance, in terms of supporting the learner's pursuit of a particular goal and inciting crossing over to a more complex task; marking critical features of a task and "interpreting discrepancies" between what a child has done and what the correct production is; frustration control, in terms of minimizing the stress related to task-solving and a "demonstration or modelling the solution of a task" (Wood, Bruner, Ross, 1976,98; van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen, 2010).

Beishuizen, 2010).

(Wood, Bruner, Ross, 1976,98; van de Pol, Volman, Beishuizen, 2010).

knowledge to be viable. Constructivism emphasizes the constructive nature of cognition and knowledge, the relativity of cognition and knowledge, the value background of cognition and knowledge, the processuality and the functionality of knowledge.

It is considered that constructivism in education and pedagogy is a "promising" theory, as an answer to objectivist epistemology of behaviourism in theories and practices of education. Discussions amongst constructivists about learning and teaching deal with "truth" and "viability". "Truthfulness" expressed in terms of "mutual thinking" in learning and teaching presupposes a consensus realizable through positions of authority. "Mutual thinking" in institutional contexts of learning and teaching could signify an acceptance of the "truth" of the authority. On the other hand, there is an understanding, in the sense of accomplishing, accomplishment of mutual minimal level of coordination of students' and teachers' different perspectives, with the purpose of continuity in realizing mutual intentions, resolving a social-cognitive conflict.

From the perspective of social constructivism, i. e. sociocultural theory, learning is distributed, interactive, contextual and the result of student»s participation in the community of practice. The social nature of learning and teaching confirms the importance of social interaction in which the individual -the student constructs his/her reality in reciprocal relations with others, who are important in his/ her life.

Different variations of constructivism are related to a common (or similar) view of learning as an active process of constructing knowledge and viewing teaching as a process of support of learning. What is support of learning from a constructivist perspective? Radical constructivists prioritize creating an environment for learning in which "authentic learning contexts" are provided, and social constructivists prioritize mediation which is accomplished through active participation in which the student transforms his/her understanding and ways of problem-solving.

Active participation presupposes intensive interactions, personalized contingent guidance, prompt feedback, approval, explanation, suggestions, reflections. This kind of active participation is considered in the context of scaffolding - a specific way of guiding in "the zone of proximal development".

Scaffolding as a metaphor for the "instruction process", "way of teaching", "guiding learning" based on the concept of "the zone of proximal development" from Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory in which the teacher (adults, children) motivationally, cognitively and emotionally supports learning, with the purpose of a higher level of achievement and development of the student.

Scaffolding in pedagogy (taken over from and/or modified from psychology) is considered from the perspective of successful learning with different purposes: from accomplishing curriculum goals to developmental achievements.

One of the important current problems in interpreting and researching scaffolding is the consideration of scaffolding as a directive instructional strategy initiated by the teacher outside of its original theoretical context-Vygotsky»s cultural-historical theory.

The problem of accomplishing intersubjectivity in situations of learning and teaching can be exemplified by my research. Teachers» internalized practices are characterized by a certain replication of their own experiences of learning and teaching, and this is visible in the social positioning and their asymmetrical relations with students. On the other hand, children»s conceptualizations of their experiences of learning and teaching presuppose diversity and changeability in the positions of being and becoming.
