‘Evolution’ Almanac 269

ANNOUNCEMENT

CALL FOR PAPERS ‘EVOLUTION’

Interdisciplinary Almanac

Dear Colleagues,

These days few would deny the importance of interdisciplinary research. One of the most fruitful areas of interdisciplinary studies - where representatives of natural, mathematical, and social sciences can find a common ground - is the study of evolution. For this reason we wish to announce a project that hopefully will bring together the various scholars in this field. One of the most effective ways to do so is by organizing a series of interdisciplinary publications.

We intend to publish an interdisciplinary almanac titled Evolution. Within the framework of this almanac we intend to publish articles that study various forms of evolution (including macroevolution as its particular aspect), evolutionary processes, trends, mechanisms, and the peculiarities of each category. Our experience of applying the ideas produced through the study of one type of macroevolution (e.g., biological macroevolution) to that of another type (e.g., social macroevolution) suggests that this approach should be very productive. It is also possible to consider macroevolution as a single process. Within this approach it is important to understand which general laws and rules describe this process, even though the operation of those laws and rules may vary significantly in different cases, such as cosmic, geological, biological, or social. That is why we consider it important to analyze the evolution of inanimate nature, of animate nature, and of society as consecutive, yet co-existing, forms of macroevolution.

We wish to encourage a very wide spectrum of themes, from Big History to particular issues of evolutionary theory in biology and the social sciences. A few possible issues can be outlined, but the list below is no way exhaustive: 1) comparisons between different types of evolution, including cosmic, chemical, biological, and social; 2) ‘Big History’ issues; 3) history of evolutionary theories; 4) particular issues of evolutionary theories with respect to a given field (or the intersection between two different fields - for example, ethology or biochemistry); 5) other issues, including the macroevolution of languages, culture, cognition, etc.

We are looking forward to receiving your comments, suggestions, and views on the idea of the proposed Almanac - and also your articles.

There are no formal word limits for submitted articles.

The submission deadline for the first issue of the Almanac is February 1, 2009.
