EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND PERSONALITY'S PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH

CORRELATES

The article deals with establishing correlations between emotional intelligence and personality's psychological health vectors. Diagnostics of emotional intelligence was performed with the help of "Emotional intelligence" questionnaire (D. M. Lyusin); diagnostics of personality's psychological health was carried out with the "Individual model of psychological health" inventory (A. V. Kozlov). 56 people including both males and females were studied. It was determined that personality's psychological health vectors and emotional intelligence potentiate each other.

Key words

emotional intelligence, psychological health, personality.

Topicality. The «emotional intelligence» construct refers to that sector of exploratory effort, where attempts are made to scientifically answer such questions as what determines if a person's life is successful, what makes him psychologically healthy and well. The present state of science is characterized by significant success of technical progress, information technologies. However, the latter cannot be said about those sciences which serve the development and scientific reasoning of problem solving method of personality and society on the whole. The 21st century is characterized as highly emotionogenic, having heightened requirements to emotional-volitional personality regulation, and the problem of the person, who lives in the epoch of postmodernism, is the problem of «free

immaturity». An immature personality gets freedom and at the same time he/she knows how to be his own master. Thus a lot of research of the last decade abounds in works, which are devoted to personality's sanogenic potential, psychological well-being, life quality, emotional comfort, psychological health. Psychological health is one of the most developed and conceptualized notions.

The purpose of this article is to study the correlates of emotional intelligence and personality's psychological

health.

Theoretical background of research. The notion of "emotional intelligence" was introduced into scientific psychology in 1983 by H. Gardner, who suggested the existence of not one kind of intelligence, which influences a person's life efficiency, but of several, among which he named emotional too. The book "Emotional intelligence" by D.Goleman, published in 1995, which became a best-seller, promoted the inculcation of this notion in psychology. The new psychological construct «emotional intelligence» was experimentally developed in the works of American psychologists J. Mayer and P. Salloway. They determined emotional intelligence as a group of mental abilities, which facilitate awareness and understanding of own emotions and the emotions of others. The emotional intelligence is viewed as a substructure of social intelligence. It includes the following components: identification and expression of emotions (of one's own and those of other people), emotions control (of one's own and those of other people), the use of emotions in reasoning and activities. Not long ago D. V. Lyusin [2,3] suggested a new model of emotional intelligence. The author perceives emotional intelligence as a construct, which has a dual nature and is connected, on the one hand, with cognitive abilities, and on the other hand, with personality characteristics. Emotional intelligence is a psychological structure, which is formed in the course of person's life and is influenced by a range of factors, which determine its level and specific individual features.

In psychology the development of psychological health phenomenon started relatively not long ago. And although we have accumulated certain experience of its representation, full-scale understanding of psychological health has not obtained its ultimate clarity and unambiguousness yet. At the same time psychological health implicitly has experience in establishment within the scope of other sciences, which deal with the problems of life quality, namely in medicine and philosophy. According to the results of a recent research [4] the structure of psychological health is presented by a range of its realization areas, i.e.: psychical equilibrium, prosocial orientation, physical well-being, humanistic position, aspiration to be oneself, creative self-expression, family well-being, spirituality, goal orientation, intellectual growth.

Research methods. Psychodiagnostic, mathematical-statistical methods were used. The psychodiagnostic method was realized by «Emotional intelligence questionnaire» (D. V. Lyusin) and the «Individual model of psychological health» inventory (A. V. Kozlov). The mathematical-statistical method was realized by correlational analysis of T-Kendall.

«Emotional intelligence questionnaire» includes five subscales, which, in their turn, are combined into four scales of general order. The scale «interpersonal EI» diagnoses the ability to understand emotions of other people and control them. The scale «intrapersonal EI» diagnoses the ability to understand one's own emotions and control them. The scale «understanding of emotions» diagnoses the ability to understand one's own emotions and those of other people. The scale «control of emotions» diagnoses the ability to control one's own emotions and those of other people.

«Individual model of psychological health» inventory diagnoses eight vectors of personality's emotional health: strategic vector, prosocial vector, I-vector, creative vector, spiritual vector, intelligence vector, family vector and humanistic vector.

The sampling consists of 56 people (25 males and 31 females) aged 19-42 (M=33±8.2). All those under study were brought up in two-parent families, 66% of them had siblings. 78% of those under study are married, 82% of them have children. 23% of all those under study are obtaining higher education, 77% have completed higher education, 69% of them are employed.

The research results and their interpretation. As the result of correlation analysis we obtained the following connections between components of emotional intelligence and personality's psychological health. We have statistically established valid positive correlation links between strategic vectors of psychological health, expression control (t=0.292, p<0.05) and emotions control (t=0.297, p<0.05). Therefore, centrality of personal psychological health conception on ideas of achievement, success, self-sufficiency is accompanied by certain emotionality - control

of emotional expression. When considering the strategic vector of psychological well-being, emotionality serves the area of aspirations, ambitions and achievements. I-type of psychological health significantly correlates with intrapersonal emotional intelligence (т=0.521, p<0.01) and the ability to understand one's own emotions and those of other people (т=0.515, p<0.01). Thus, emotional intelligence with domineering ideas of personal psychological health, which are connected to intraception and intrapersonal potential, serves the priority of personal internal world and its self-knowledge. We have also established significant negative correlation links between intelligence vector of psychological health, interpersonal (т=-0.499, p<0.01) and intrapersonal emotional intelligence (т= - 0.348, p<0.05). Thus, centrality of psychological health conception around the idea of intellectual growth blocks the development of emotional intelligence. The data obtained correspond to the data of A. V. Kozlov, who states the intelligence vector is the least sanogenic, compared to the other vectors of psychological health. As sanogenic criteria of reaching psychological health the author considered the following: self - acceptance, acceptance of others, absence of psychological intimacy fear, absence of loneliness, adequate self-judgement. Emotional intelligence can also be considered sanogenic. The creative vector of psychological well-being is connected to interpersonal (т=0.587, p<0.01), intrapersonal (т=0.312, p<0.05) emotional intelligence and also to subscales of «understanding emotions» (t=0.310, p<0.05), «emotions control» (т=0.320, p<0.05), «understanding emotions of others» (т=0.299, p<0.05). Therefore the creative vector of psychological well-being, the pivot of which is creative approach to life, suggests also creative approach in emotional sphere. Such personalities are close to their world of emotions, they can control it, and they also understand emotional states of other people and can control them.

Humanistic vector of psychological health is greatly and positively connected to interpersonal emotional intelligence (т=0.495, p<0.01), which indicates the supremacy of other people in the life of the person with this vector of psychological health. This is controlled by emotional intelligence.

It should be noted that the prosocial, spiritual, family and vector of psychological health do not have any great correlation links to the scales of emotional intelligence. We can suppose that the prosocial orientation of personality leads to emotional sphere flattening, its reduction, supremacy of social activity over emotional sphere of life. The spiritual vector of psychological health is of diverted, abstract, conceptual character, which leads to elimination of emotional sphere regulators. The family vector of psychological health, is most likely the vector of incorporated experience of relationships with meaningful others and in which the emotional intelligence is not its regulator.

Conclusions. The vectors of personality's psychological health and emotional intelligence mutually potentiate each other. The strategic vector of psychological health correlates with expression control and one's own emotions control. I-type of psychological health correlates with intrapersonal emotional intelligence and the ability to understand one's own emotions and those of other people. The intelligence vector of psychological health is negatively linked to interpersonal and intrapersonal emotional intelligence. The creative vector of psychological well-being is connected to interpersonal and intrapersonal emotional intelligence. The humanistic vector of psychological health is connected to interpersonal emotional intelligence.
